Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

they may or may not test you on the back part.... But rest assured..just because you have a back you won't be rejected based on that fact...........

And forget about what will come in your way... Prepare for the journey... Hardly a couple of months to go.....

Worry about these things once you get a call....

thank youu!!! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ
Also, in these times of desperation, I am getting very weird ideas to pursue my dreams of doing an MBA from top B-schools.

My academic past is as below:-

10th- 80.6%
12th - 84%
B.Tech - 4.5 (out of 10!) :(

Currently joined a job as an engineer (not software) somewhere. I am sure I will stick to this job for at least one year.

Now my plan is to do some distance-learning (or correspondence) bachelor's program in some other field. BA preferably, but from a recognized university. I would do this only so as to clear the eligibility for writing CAT and other exams. I am sure I can get 50% this time (I have no other choice!). So my first question is whether this would be a good idea or would be a waste of time? Next I want to ask whether IIMs allow BA-correspondence students admission to their schools? In other words, are such bachelor's degree recognized by IIMs and other B-schools? And what is the minimum time in which I could get such a degree?
I am thinking of applying to IGNOU.

Thank you.

Regards,
Shail

I think you can probably go through CAT eligibility criteria to know more about the same... I don't think a correspondence course would be taken into consideration by the IIM people... but then I am not really sure..

Give a Google for CAT Eligibility Criteria and you should be able to find it..

10th - 79%
12th - 74%
BscIT - just above 50%
Actually I was doing Engg. from an average college in pune. But I was not able to do well, and I failed in the second year. And I dropped engg.. It was the stupidest mistake of my life. And now I am in BscIT last year. Now it is coming to me that I stand nowhere. That I have completely ruined my career. I want to try my last shot at a good B-School, especially IIMs. I know I have the heart to do it. But will these B-schools consider me even if I get good percentile after looking at my background?

First get a Good percentile and then prepare well for GDPI. No point bothering about If's and But's. If you have it in you, then you will make it. If you don't, then you won't. Work hard with consistency and you will succeed. All the best. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Thanks for the motivation. Can u tell me what they look for in an applicant applying for MBA.

Everything that an Ideal Manager should be. Career clarity, focus on life goals, determination, confidence, persistence, sound technical knowledge of grad subjects, current affairs, GK, etc. You should also possess decent communication skills and have a good presentability factor.

For eligibility details check out the CAT website. Ideally you should have decent work-experience, should have participated in extra-curriculars and so on. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

So u are saying that if I have good percentile and managerial qualities, my bad profile can be ignored?

Mostly no, your profile will definitely Not be ignored.. A good profile will surely help you get admission in a decent Bschool. However different Bschools have different criterias. Still, most of them will prefer to take a candidate with a decent academic record throughout his life. Some like IIM-B give extra emphasis on acads. You cannot change the past. So just concentrate on getting a good score for now.

Thanks to Satwinder for a quick reply. Can someone else also have a take on this.
I want to know if the panel will reject me for quitting engg. even if I pass the CAT and other exams with good percentile? As I dont want to invest my one year in it, do hardwork and get good marks and still get rejected by the B-schools. I dont think its like IITs, where u get wat u invest.

Hi

I can tell you from my personal experience that your Graduation Scores would be a major hindrance in your MBA prep.. I got 98.7%tile in XAT and got selected for XLRI GDPI, the PI lasted for 15 minutes where all they wanted to know was that after 91% in Xth and 89th in XIIth. Why did I get a 6.1 GPA..?

I faced similar problems in SP Jain, IIFT Delhi interviews and i didn't get calls from any decent college(NITIE, MDI, IMT) in CAT leave alone IIMs with my 96.2%tile.. The interviewer would seem myopic beyond the point of your "INCONSISTENT ACADEMIA".

Your luck might favor you or fate may be on your side but i suggest you think long and hard before you make a decision on CAT.

Best Of Luck

What baffles me about GMAT and MBA from abroad is that they look for the quality of work and at the same point they require substantial letters of recommendations. If someone plans to work in his family business there is no doubt that the amount of exposure and quality of work would be better than the run of the mill fresher straight from college would attain but at the same time the letters of recommendations would be worse as they would be from employees working for him or his family members only. Its ironic.

What do u guys suggest for work experience for 2 years?? FAMILY BUSINESS OR an IT JOB in MNC??

Buddy,

In this case, only you can make the final call. People will post different pros and cons for both IT Industry as well as family business and this will increase your confusion as you are already aware of the points for both.

I would rather suggest that talk to your dad and see what all responsibilities he can give you in business and if those are good enough... you can go for family business . Reason being that foreign b-schools don't just consider the number of months , but the responsibilities you held during the time of work are given more importance.

Can u please tell me, how did your interview with XLRI went. Like how u tried to convince them and what were there reactions. And what if I target 99 percentile in CAT, would then things be any different? I have 1 year ahead of me, I can study hard and check my performance in mocks.

Well first before taking any decison , we have to see what options u have

If CAT is the only option u have, then why r u thinking there is no point in thinking

If u have any other opiton, and want to give CAT a shot then also there is no point of thinking

The bottomline is , there may be things which might have ruined u r past but there can be nthin done about it, as u cannot change it, so there is no point crying over spilled milk, what we can do is now how to minimize the loss and that is by striving hard in every field we r choosing,

Secondly Dont curse yourself by remembering something u didi wrong in past, it happens with everybody, u can say to panel that everybody commits mistake, but the key is to learn with them and move on. I would like to Quote some examples here

1. my college junior , who didi his btech with almost 5 backs made it to IIM A

2. another my friend got 56 in 12th and made it to IIM C

3. live example prem sir , who got 56 in btech and made it to IIM C

So, I wont say it will be easy but it is not impossible, and firstly make u r mind mentally toguh, life will thro more bigger challenges then CAT,there is no point being emotoinaly weak as it will not help here.

Dont loose hope, try giving u r best shot, there r colleges like IIM C who dnt care about u r acads and belive me XLRI also dont care much , the collges which care like IIM B, IIM s and SPJIMR will not call you in the first place, but if u leave them apart IIFT and MDI give strict score based cals so dot worry and start preparing, and dont regret and dont look bak , just learn fromt he misatkes

in the end i would like to quote

" Nobody can go back and make a brand new start but u can start from now and make a brand new end "

Amen

Peace ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

My interview started with the general introduction of myself and my strengths in particular. I did my engineering in Electronics and Communication so the basic GSM, 3G and Mobile Technology questions followed. After that the issue of my percentage was raised and i tried explaining that my focus was on extracurricular rather than just studies but then the interviewer got a little mad at me. I also tried to explain that my grades were lower in the first 2 years but then i did improve from a 5 point something to 6 but then he just said you dont seem to appreciate what you have earned and thanked me for coming. So it was pretty ruthless.

I am not crying about my past.:) What happened happened, it happened for a reason. I know very little about CAT. All I want is a clear perspective before I start my preperation. Or these points will keep knocking in my head.
Thanks for the reply. It really helped, especially those examples and colleges calling structure.
