Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

what were you doing from the last two years?
I have encountered this question many times, so some possible answers:

1. Free time to refresh mind in life is necessary.

2. Preparing for CAT as I do not believe in working unnecessarily which do not to offer quality work-ex learning.

3. Helped some NGO

4. Gave some time to family, need to prioritize things as family is important

5. Recession hit times, not easy for fresher to find job, so thought of increasing aptitude and do MBA

6. Doing B.Tech from 3 tier college was a learning in life - never go second class again.

7. Read a hell lot of books in two years.

8. Tried to open some kind of business but failed, yet learned real life things.

9. Worked as a freelancer.

10. worked on some correspondence/certification course and got some certificates.

11. Last two years were bad time for me (everyone has), I coped it with lot of courage and decided to do MBA!

I am really sorry but what are you teaching the people here?

Taking nothing away from you, I would only suggest to answer with any of those replies if you have actually done any of them. otherwise the person bluffing around will be in huge trouble that he might not even understand during the interview stage, but will be certain when the results come out.

The worst thing you can do in a Personal Interview is bluff and lie.

If anyone is free, chances are that you will fit in any of things above.

Lying and bluffing is not the worst thing. Getting caught while lying is!

It is practically impossible to judge a person in 5 - 45 minutes in an interview. Its just that you have to market yourself.

I would prefer to bluff instead of saying - I did nothing but wasted two years (oh yes...what a great job you have done...so you will waste another 2 in a B-School....Reject!)

I have nothing against your opinion but don't you think that the panel of top 15 b schools is experienced enough to sense the bluff ?(if that is the case many people would hoodwink the panel and enter b schools )

I would like to suggest that its better if we end the above discussion before it gets too heated up. I personally would never recommend anyone to bluff in interviews, no matter what the reason. Ends cannot always justify the means. In any case, whether a candidate wants to bluff or not is his/her own personal decision. Let the debate end here. Thanking all.

It should be a smart bluff. My friend who had lost his year during his engg managed to get thru the interview. The interviewer understood he's bluffing but the smartness behind it was amazing. 'He also commented at the end' Finally he had d admit. I'm talking abt none other then Ximb

I will never ever recommend bluffing to anyone and its against my personal and ethical principles. It obviously may not be the same for everyone else around.

About "smart hoodwinking", just shows what level of desperation we have reached as a society.

About "losing years" - Its not a crime, but if you did lose a year while you did nothing other better then it is completely wrong to lie and bluff about it.
We should be man enough to either do things other than just prepare or rather not lie about it. Lying about helping ngo, failing in a business,

People from whom ends justify the means never make it anywhere in life.

As a principle, on PG, everyone who has been here long enough has imbued and imbibed truth and brilliance as cornerstones not just in their professional but their personal lives as well and I don't think we as a group of people, who believe in excellence, believe in lying and belying just to get to a place.

We as a community stand for http://www.pagalguy.com/discussions/all-i-wanted-to-speak-about-cat-25002933 and a lot of the guys in that thread were capable enough to get through to a million places by lying and deceit. They didn't. There are many people who can pay their way into the best of schools in India or use their contacts to gain admission in a lot of places, including the ones named on this thread and beyond but they don't. Not because they can't but because they choose not to.

Excellence always has and always will have a place in the hearts and minds of people who have principles. As for people without principles, I don't think any B-School in the world can bring any difference to their lives or to lives of people around them.

Excellence doesn't need an excuse :D

Best of Luck.

When I posted my 11 points, I didnt mean to lie or bluff at all.

I meant that you can develop any of these activities for CAT (till your interviews) and leave after that, if you want.

I was not a reader but preparing for CAT, I have started reading books (fiction, autobiography, stories).

I am an Electronics Engineer and I'm currently working with Religare Financial Services as a Research Analyst for 2 months now(Joined in May 2010).

I also have a placement at CSC, Noida as an IT Professional where the joining is in August 2010.

My father owns an extremely successful business in the Telecom Equipment Sector.

I secured 98.7%ile in XAT and 96.4%tile in CAT but I was not satisfied with the my choices of MBA colleges.

I plan to do MBA( India or Abroad) after working for 2-3 years. Out of my 3 choices, in which company should I work to get the best work experience and referrals/recommendations ?

If I plan to eventually join my dads business(After 5 years or so). Would an MBA in India be more beneficial or MBA from Abroad?

Please suggest....

The problem with working with Religare Finances coming from an engineering background is immense as my work profile includes accounts, taxation and finance which to be honest, is not my strength.

And working in my own business would not give me credible references as the best reference would be of my own father.

I was counting on the brand name of CSC, wouldn't working with a 17billion$ company with international exposure give me the desired launch for a top of the league MBA COLLEGE?

Basically it boils down to the age old question of quality of work or the brand name of the company?

If you opt for Indian B-Schools and plan to give CAT , then what matters the most is ' number of months' you have worked. Quality does not play major role in giving out calls for GDPI ( except colleges like S.P.Jain , where calls are profile based). Company name and work profile matters a bit in GD-PI phase but not much as far as indian b-schools are concerned. However, if you work for Religare or join your father's business , it will provide you an advantage as it sets you apart from common league of IT Professionals.

If you decide to go abroad, what matters most is the quality of work ex you have and what contribution you made to the organization. Here, being the part of father's business , might provide you an extra edge.

Coming to your last query, after having 5 yrs of work ex , i would suggest you to go for GMAT and do MBA from abroad.

Hope this helps,
Varun
I am Aditya, graduated with HM in 2006 and have nearly one years of exp and also a PGrad in Hospitality from a college in London. I somehow dont see myself working in the hospitality/hotel industry for a long time and would like to shift industry as well as function.
Do you think its wise to take a break this year from work and start prepaing for the entrance exams? And will there be a lot of fingers pointing for waking up so late to quit the industry and move on to another? Any suggestions would be appriciated. Morever if theres any HM graduate who has got into good B schools please if I can have a word or two with them would help me clear a lot of confusion.
Thanks again.
Aditya

What baffles me about GMAT and MBA from abroad is that they look for the quality of work and at the same point they require substantial letters of recommendations. If I work in my fathers company there is no doubt that the amount of exposure and quality of work would be better than the run of the mill fresher straight from college would attain but at the same time the letters of recommendations would be worse as they would be from employees working for my father or himself only. Its ironic.

I'm Vijay. I have completed my B.com(2009) Mumbai university. I secured 115/240 marks in Mah/MBA CET 2010
I want an advise on which colleges should i opt for in Mumbai for MMS.

Also i am confused on Kohinoor Management school which opened in 2010 in mumbai offering PGDM- assures quality study with seminars,Guest lectures, Case studis..etc

& Atlast an Private institute (Mumbai) offering PGPM 2yrs with assured placements, But Is NOT AICTE Approved- Also assures Quality study,Guest lecturers from IIM's, CAse studies, CEO visits, assured placements..etc

PLz guide me thru this, i'm totaly confused on which option i should select.

HELLO.. I have a very IMPORTANT question to ask.. (well.. important from my perspective anyway )..
First, let me get into the details of my Predicament..

P). I am doing my BE:IS under Visvesvaraya Technological University and my final i.e. 8th semester exams have gotten over and the results are already out... I FAILED in one of my subjects and I KNOW i won't clear if i give it for revaluation.. so i have NO OTHER CHOICE but to write the FAILED SUBJECT in DECEMBER.. which means I don't have a degree YET(so i can't go looking for an ENGG job 😞 )

and here's the Question:

Q). Can I write the MBA entrance exams (MAINLY CAT) THIS YEAR (and other entrance exams EARLY next year), even though i DON'T have a degree yet and have a back paper? (I know i can clear THAT ONE BACK PAPER IN DECEMBER and get my degree by April next year!!)

P.S. Other than that I do fit all the other eligibility criteria for CAT i.e. above 50% aggregate etc. etc...

Please HELP!!
Thanking You in advance!!

They may or may not test you on the back part.... but rest assured..just because you have a back you won't be rejected based on that fact...........

And forget about what will come in your way... prepare for the journey... hardly a couple of months to go.....

Worry about these things once you get a call....
