Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

Thanks a lot Varun..you know being in a country like Saudi Arabia where you can hardly meet anyone who aspires/knows about CAT. The questions which I posted have been disturbing me for quite some time..Thanks for your timely reply and I am happy to hear that being from a non engineering background or my age is not a barrier for cracking CAT...

cheers pal...

dont worry dude about age .have heard people cracking cat at age of 29/30. so age is not at all a criteria. just try to put your best foot forward........would suggest u to give a crack at cat 10 if it is possible for u....

Hi,
I am planning to give CAT 11 and if possible CAT 10 a try..I am currently in Saudi Arabia. I have studied Arts and Literature for my graduation. I am planning to start my own preparation with CAT books by Arun Sharma for the next six months after which I am planning to come back to India and join TIME. Are the Arun Sharma books ok for a starter like me??.. Is there any other recommended stuff for me in the next six months apart from referring to these books?? Please comment...

Cheers..
Ishak

Dear Shashank,

Went through your post..First of all, what my experiences tells me is that no one is born as a manager..Even I was also an introvert in a lesser age and I am the youngest one in the family and I had all my elders giving me different suggestions and I was not able to take the right decision on my career..Some people will be having inborn leadership skills..but it doesn't mean that they cannot be nurtured and achieved by any other person..
Whether you fits into MBA or not, is a question that you should ask yourself and try to find the answer. It may take some time..but beleive me..doing/working what we are good at is not something that everyone can do..so please be sure when you take a decision on your career. I am 27 years old now and after all these years I realize that many of the wrong decisions which we take can have long term effects on our career/life.. So put some time on deciding your path..once you decide you want to be something no one can stop you from doing it..you need to have that motivation in you and you can convince your elders as well as they loves you and they are your well wishers...

All the best
Ishak

Hello,

I am a BMS (Bachelor of Management Science) 2nd year student and an MBA aspirant. Please help me through a question which is confusing me that- "How far is it justified to drop a year after graduation for CAT preparation? Shall this effect my future in any way?"

My classmates have already started their preparations and have joined CAT preparation centers but due to some health problems I am unable to pusue for CAT preparation as well as Graduation together. I am in a dilemma that dropping an year after graduation is a severe drawback for entering into a good MBA college. But I am bound to drop an year.

Please guide me. I am very much worried.
😞 😞

Dear Rooski,

I guess you still have one year left to complete your BMS as you are still in the second year..try to put some time apart to know more about CAT and try to evaluate your strengths and weakness in CAT. The more information that you can gather on CAT the more aware you will be on the possibilities for you in CAT and eventually you can decide whether you should drop one year exclusively for CAT preparation after your graduation..As far as your future is concerned, spending time for CAT will only increase your chances for getting into the best B-schools..So dont worry about that..you are still very young and you have all the time..Be focused on your goal and work for it...all the best..

cheers

Ishak

Do not Post the same Question in multiple Threads. Be patient and wait for someone to reply back.

I will suggest try to prepare alongside ur job. If at all u want to leave the job u can...This gap will not make a huge difference..yes some colleges do consider it but majority don't. If u get a 99+ in CAT I dont think the gap will affect u much. I know some guys who dropped for an year and are in IIMs.
Posting it again

I am not answering anybody's query but while skimming htru some of posts, I am putting some points form my experience:

Do not leave the job for cAT, as it adds presssure to you on the D Day, also if you have job it gives you mental support, that if CAT is lost not evrything is lost
Try taking jobs which will be more aligned to your field of interest when u will go for MBA, I know it is quite tuff to do this
Also do not feel that IT jobs are bad or of no use, the thing is they are most job generator jobs, look into positves of it, like onsite, exposure presentations client interaction
If your are a mehcnanical/civil/elcetronics engineer prefer job of your field over IT jos, as they make u more relevant in terms of applying to schools abroad as well as in india
I will suggest evrybody to work somewhere or the other, as this year i think IIM K didint even called a 99.8 %iler fresehr, they preferred work ex, so it very very rucial right now
IF you think u cannot study with job, think over gaina, I know people who quit the jobs could not make th cut and later on repent, as your admison depends on a lot of factors which u will come to know as u go forward in this journey
Do not sacrifice evrything for CAT, believe me it does not wokr that way, poeple keep chucking onsite and many other things, and later on repenet again
be serious in your job and do well there, it will give u a high or your cat exam
CAt is more about mental prep then academic

There lot of other things but i think these are the imp ones

Hello everyone.. my first post on PG
Profile BTech Mech Engg NIT Jalandhar (Graduated)
Acads Grad 60 pc 2 arrears (cleared)
12th 67 pc (STate Board),10th 86 CBSE
My area of interest is automobiles and that is the sole reason why i have taken up mechanical engineering. Well now since i have pretty much screwed my academics in 12th and graduation level(earlier had a low % but no backlogs to save grace but in the final yr flunked in 2 subjects) i think that i have very much screwed my chances of getting into a good b school and I dont want to get into a second rung b school just for the sake of it because i know what importance the the school plays in developing the person as a professional.

My ultimate aim is to do an MBA so that i can pave my way into management of an automobile firm
So i thought to improve my profile for admission into B school i should go for post graduation in engineering MS(for this i have applied to some good univs in UK and managed to get an admit into a top automotive engg program in UK from cranfield university) this way after putting up say 3-4 yrs of work ex in R&D; i would have built a unique profile and done something that i love and have a well rounded knowledge of automobile industry and then pursue MBA in operations and strategy.

Now i want to know that will this approach help me out in improving my profile? or put in another way can a good academic score in post graduate degree plus good related work ex help in reducing the damage caused by a bad undergraduate record?

Hi,
I'm now at crossroads in my career, where I've to chose continuing in my technical domain (R&D;) or management domain. I've spent close to 7 years in R&D;, and I'm now a bit concerned about future growth. I've always wanted to shift to management area, but never got a chance. Now , I'm planning to shift my career towards that. After some basic research, I can find the below 4 options for me:

1. Product management
2. Project Management
3. Program management
4. Business analyst/consultant

Some questions:

How difficult is it for a person in core R&D; to get into the above areas ? What are the skill sets required ? Also, is having a degree in management like MBA a pre requisite for these roles ? And what is the career path above these roles. Can you get into senior management from these roles in a company ?

And is there anything I can do in my current role of a software developer that will enable me to prepare myself for the above roles ? Help is highly appreciated. If you have some online links, please share them across as well. Thanks very much in advance

Dear karthick. . .This is same for most of the people from tier 3 colleges(including me). For your knowledge, I am also B.E(2009) and still without a job. I know what kind of pressure your are facing. Same as yours, my cat percentiles were 78(200 and 73(2009). But as PG team had said

"The thing is that this is just a bad phase of your life and not complete life, and it will pass away."

Hope god pass this bad phase from our lives very soon.

what were you doing from the last two years?
I have encountered this question many times, so some possible answers:

1. Free time to refresh mind in life is necessary.

2. Preparing for CAT as I do not believe in working unnecessarily which do not to offer quality work-ex learning.

3. Helped some NGO

4. Gave some time to family, need to prioritize things as family is important

5. Recession hit times, not easy for fresher to find job, so thought of increasing aptitude and do MBA

6. Doing B.Tech from 3 tier college was a learning in life - never go second class again.

7. Read a hell lot of books in two years.

8. Tried to open some kind of business but failed, yet learned real life things.

9. Worked as a freelancer.

10. worked on some correspondence/certification course and got some certificates.

11. Last two years were bad time for me (everyone has), I coped it with lot of courage and decided to do MBA!
