I got the mail from Ranson Paul and my joining is from 28th dec Trivandrum and i am from IT.I have few questions about the training if any senior would answer that.First i wanna know how hard is the training.How often we get the assingnments stuff and all.Second is that which book should we refer to for Unix.Although they have refferred to some books but i have not heard of any of them.So please let me know some good book for unix which should also be easy to follow.

dont worry at all abt the training in TCS....
as far as the guys who are heading towards trivi is concerned, i must u all u ppl are gonn have a gem of a time...
its a brilliant centre with soo many new things to learn ..not only technolofy & aspects of a potential professional life & but also on ur soft skills part.....the major chunk of emphasis is on personality development & life skills...
guess its now shortened to just 25 something odd days....else 5 months back it used to be of two months....48-52 days...
we all had it in that structuire only...
kerala , specially trivandrm , as its rightly said is god's own city....so very beautifull.....u ppl will will have reallly enjoyable time travelling absolutely marvellous places....at the same time they will try teaching u new things....keep u a li''l busy & giving u glimpse of ur life ahead as a software pro...
but now that its duration is shortened . i really dunno how they now go about teaching & training u guys..
dont wory ,,,,u 'll learn basic S/w engineernig concepts....like cohesion coupling, data normalization....software dev life cycle etc etc.....
regarding unix, i feel Sumitabha Das is really good book....
though i forgot i forgot which one do they give u for the same....
they will provide pankaj jalote for s/w engg....
as far guys for HYD are concerned their training is bit more on technical side.....no doubt it will fetch them a world of good.....its conducted in CMC campus whcih is a part of now TCS now aafter the merger, guys ther will see what TCS is , specially the state of the art TCS Deccan ark infrastructure & clientile....
anyways......dont worry abt joining dates & medical ...
they keep postponing as these guyshave been tremendously high on recruitment spree .....including the other two from THE BIG THREE ( TCS, Infy & Wipro) ...so they might be clearing the backlot of ppl recruited earlier.....

I got selected by both TCS & WIPRO on-campus. I would like to know what is the duration of the bond at TCS. I have heard that its worth 50K. Some TCS-er or other knowledgeable ppl please provide some info.

well..... this is to tel u that i was selected by TCS in Nirma off-campus on 3-4 Sept. and i have recvd a mail by Ranson Paul stating my joining date i.e. 27th Feb at Trivndrm. i recvd the mail on 23rd Nov and had my medical on the same day (co-incidently).
And some info ---- there is NO CONNECTION between the medical test and the joining date mail ......as the mail (as in mi case) came from Mumbai headquarters, and according to the mail, they were askin us to HAVE the medical test IF we didnt have it at the time of the receival of the mail.
Moreover, many people were asking about the MEDICAL TEST REPORT .......well, i was told about the "status" of my reports - whether normal or not - after 4 hrs ...AT THE HOSPITAL itself. THEY NEVER GIVE OUT THE REPORT TO U ......ITS DIRECTLY SENT TO THE corresponding TCS OFFICE.
well ...i was getting a bit nervous due to the long distance, but myCATwalk's statements make me really eager to join tha centre ! Thanks myCATwalk .... ur words proved encouraging (though unknowingly) !!!

Can someone from TCS pls tell me if it is advisable to join TCS rather than INFy..

And yeah like somebody said there is absolutely no connection bet ur med test dates and ur Ilp dates.For all that I know ppl Who were selected in July this year and got their offer letters in Sept are having their ILPs in March next year!!!

well guyss.......i think NEW LIFE was just too flowery in my praise .....see all u ppl will shortly know the nuances of working in an IT organisations as big as TCS....asia's largest s/w exporter........but i would advise u to have a strong foothold of the long term goal of ur life..if that is somethig different from a run of the mill work in IT then , just take it as a halt( tsc, infy whatever) & then create an ideal launchpad for urself by wrting CAt or whatever u have aspired for in ur career.....

as far as the confusion between TCS Vs Infy is concerned...iam sure thats one thing u can never reach & obtain any kinda consensus for......
u will haev as many suggestions as the no of speakers in front of u ...
so take ur own time.....see what do u really hope & expect of the employer...
INfy , no doubt has been the BRAND to reckon with ....Respected & Profit wise, rocking I would say...
But then tehres TCS leader since the era of 60's, still most valuable in terms of assets & worth , revenues & global standing (global thirteenth as against 16th of Infy & 17 th of Wipro & 15th is Perot Systems)....
specially Infy & TCS are really neck to neck. ...infy just crossed TCS last month to become 4th largetr company of highest market capitalization....where as TCS still goin great guns in revenues close to 3.5 billions now & rest all on the verge of touching 2.....
so u can really not decide which is one unanimously better & sstanding out...
but yeah if u want a quick onsite stint, join TCS...*( specially if u are a comps science, or a post graduate).....elsewise wanna go for bransd then INFY....(very tough choice though) the only reason being TCS is highly media shy...

I dont know whether these questions are suitable to put in this thread or not but I want information and views from people who are working in TCS . So, I have put it here.
I have few questions in my mind:-
1) According to current scenario how much time is needed to become project leaders and project managers? As now a days lots of people are joining as a trainee engineer , how much time approximately one will require to get there?
2) Now this question is related to 1st one , if you have MBA degree than what kind of growth you can expect? Means I want to know about comparison between MBA guy and Non-MBA guy in IT Industry, specially from growth perspective.
3) As you guys are in industry I want to know what kind of profile companies are giving to MBA guy?(There may be some guys around you who are MBA) My question is directly they are given position of Project leader or Project Managers? Or only MBA guys deal with Marketing and Finance?
4)So what is the importance of MBA degree in terms of IT industry? For software engineer why it is required for growth?(Here I am assuming that it will help u in growth form my cousins point of view, he is in this industry since 4 years, your view might be different)
5)Now one very important question?
What kind of profiles is given to students from IIM, XLRI, NITIE (Ivy League) Institutes?
And what kind of profile they give to students from TAPMI, IMI, IMT- Ghazibad ?
Is there any difference or they treat both the same way?
6) I dont know why but people frequently change their job in this industry? Why is it boring or only for higher perks or you get better profile after 2 years experience?
7) For Freshers if they got job also in IT company with normal 2-2.5 lacs per annum in campus placement And simultaneously getting admission into following colleges which he should choose?
If he get into IIM and XLRI than obviously no one will left opportunity to study there but if he get into following institutes what he should do? I have put here some details of bschools.
Institutes Salary according to placement 2005
1) LBS , New delhi( Avg. 5.1 lacs, Min. 4 lacs, Max. 8.5 lacs)
2)Tapmi (Av. 4.5 lacs)
3)IMI (Avg. around 5.2 not sure)

Being in TCS for the last couple of yrs i can tell u that to be a proj Manager u need at least 7-8 yrs behind you with an impressive growth in the company.
After a few years an MBA guy from a good B-School opens up a wide gap over a non-MBA
PL's and PM's are chosen from senior techies and MBA ppl are given roles like relationship Managers and senior business analysts
Too many techies are there today... U need a MBA froma good school to set u apart
PPL from XL,MDI,IIM are generally absorbed by TAS(Tata Admin services)... not too many get in to TCS per Say..... But those who do are given good roles (Though pay will be a lil less than industry standars as with any TCS'er
