ISB Interview Tips

Using the Introduction Question To Your Advantage

The introduction question shouldn't be a re-run of your resume or your academics but should be a 1.5 min speech on what you stand for, in terms of qualities and achievements. Ideally, this 1.5 min period should set the tone for the rest of the interview. In-fact, if you frame your 'tell me about yourself' question smartly, you can direct the interview in the direction you want. One good example is finishing this reply by saying 'One key achievement in my professional life has been driving a strategic shift in the way production line was run. Through the experience, I evolved to learn about ownership and initiative-taking ability."

So, you almost tell the interviewer , what to talk about next (he should ideally be curious to know about production line revamp story). Similarly, you can think of other closing lines to introduction question. In-fact, if you practice enough, you will be able to direct 70% of the interview through-out. Again practice is the key.

So, i dreamt last night that as soon as i entered the interview room, i was thrown

out as i was wearing my 'chappals'. Btw, have my interview on 27th in mumbai and needless to say i have started getting scary dreams...urgghh....:P

Hey. I had my interview on 21st in Bangalore and there were a few things I wish I knew before going so jotting them down here for those who still have it. The way it is conducted might be different in other cities but this might be good to know.

So I had to go to one of the rooms at Windsor Manor, sign on a sheet and I was given a piece of paper where I had to write my name, application reference number and the one word essay. We had to go to an adjacent room, finish the essay and get back to this room and wait to be called for the interview.ย Carry your laptop / iPad / any other tablet if possible! For those of us who are dependent on technology, it's great to be able to write the essay on Word or other such softwares which allow you to keep a tab on your word count and it's just much easier to edit your essay. If you're more of a pen and paper person, carry a notepad and a pen for your rough drafts.

Don't worry about carrying a big bag. You can leave it in the waiting room when you go for your interview. There will be people who come with an entire cabin bag because they would've travelled from another city for the interview.

Once the essay is ready, just copy it on to the sheet you were given. You will need some kind of support below the paper to write on it. There will be a table or two but the number of chairs will outnumber them so carry a book or something. If you have your laptop, that should suffice.

I was not asked to show ID proof but just carry it anyway. My interview was over an hour late so carry some fruits/snacks to munch on. Your nervousness is going to eat up all the energy you thought you had ๐Ÿ˜ƒ Also, these are hotel rooms so they obviously had washrooms. Get in there periodically and give yourself a pep talk! Don't let the wait (if there is any) bring down your spirits.

Good luck ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Organising a big birthday bash for myself on 27th to keep myself distracted atleast for this week. How are others passing the count down time? Would help me next week ๐Ÿ˜‰
