Institute of Actuaries of India-Actuarial Common Entrance Test (ACET)

and can we get any sample paper for ACET...?

@bittusaraf .. hi u from bangalore? plz help me with acet..

@buthru ACET is easy. Try practicing all questions on calculator. It will save time in exams and also remember formulas given in FAC and Stats pack. some questions are direct on formulas(AP,GP,Matrix, ect). If you get any doubt you can ask.
@bittusaraf any question banks?or the material is enough....its been long time since i passed out of my eng college

@buthru the material provided by IAI is enough. you can practice the questions in the FAC and STATS. its more than enough.

has anyone received any mail regarding the test centre and fac online study? please reply

I will be appearing for CT3 this Nov(2012). I tried with 2 papers and was not able to touch 1 paper at all. The pressure of job is making things difficult. Also you may have time but the determination to study after a long day of work and office politics is a tough ask as well. I would suggest only 1 paper for each exam. This way you will gain good hold in each paper. Actuary is not just about passing exam but gaining knowledge as well. That is why number of students member is 10,000+ but fellow is only 200. So if you want to be greedy and fast about something, it should be the number of exams you take in a slot rather the knowledge you acquire for an exam.

The above lines are my view only. You may have a better way yourself.

For everyone who are pondering over the idea of whether the ACET material is enough or a coaching is required. The below reply is for all of them:-

The basic structure of actuary is to have in depth knowledge about subjects. If you had spoken with any Actuary you will realize in an instant that he or she is at an entirely different level. A level of that sort cannot be achieved by any spoon feeding or notes given by any institutes. You have to read multiple books and clear your concepts before you become an actuary. There is no shortcut/coaching to it. This is not a CAT exam where you will learn shortcuts for exam.

The ACET study material is more than enough for passing entrance examination. No damn coaching is required. After ACET when you appear for real exams study material won't be enough. It will just have formulas and simple examples. But the level of real exam is difficult. There you need to culture lot of books to clarify and strengthen your concepts. And frankly speaking those who are actually qualified to such level of teaching would be doing much better job than coaching in a institute.

So think hard when you think about coaching. If you are an actuary you are aiming for a 1 cr package one day. That package will force everyone to take notice of you. This means it is not everyone's cup of tea. It is upto you to expand your cup or reduce your tea.

Good job. I think you are putting things in perspective here. I am a guy who tried writing Actuarial exams while doing full time job in a software company, I realized how difficult it will be to manage a job and pursuing a challenging career like Actuarial Science and opted for full time Masters degree. There is a lot to learn outside the study materials of IAI to become a well rounded Actuary. I can't comment on coaching institutes in India as I don't have any first hand experience with them but being lucky enough to do a post graduate degree in one of the reputed universities for Actuarial science taught me lot of important aspects about the profession. I feel formal university education along with self learning for exams will make one more complete professional. It's important that some one like you gives the real picture about the profession for the aspiring Actuaries like people here......it's not all rosy out there and exams are not the only measure of success any more......one need to be able to understand real essence of becoming Actuary to be a success story in this competitive world
