Let me Contribute..
Seniors..wat are the most essential things that we must have while coming to GIM..especially to the Hostel..what things we wud be provided in Rooms and wat all we shud bring with us..

Well without getting into subjective details, I will provide a list of items i deem to be necessary when u arrive in Goa. The list is a product of unmoderated, bored and tired brain storming but it will answer ur query in all possible entirety. So here goes:

1. Protective gear to protect you from rains. It can be an umbrella (Ankan Dabral style) or a raincoat. It rains very heavily here and you might need to venture out either for fun or work.

2. If you can get them for cheap - accessories like network patch cords, network switches, spike guards etc. should be brought along.

3. All your game, music, video collections. (MUST). Gamers can bring along the gamepads and joysticks too.

4. Speakers and accessories if you wanna have a blast in your room.

5. If you are buying your laptop on your own, then get along all the bills, licenses (they are normally stuck on the bottom of ur lappie), chargers, and everything u get with ur laptop. You never know what will turn out to be useful when.

6. Get stuff that you like to read and would want to recommend to the new pals u make.

7. Get all ur certificates (as listed by the letter). Otherwise they will create unnecessary and avoidable hassles.

8. Get your bikes and/or cars. (Strongly Recommended) and of course the accessories and papers that go with them.

9. Mobile phones (Again strongly recommended)

10. If you've worked previously and have some documentation and other stuff that might help you or ur peers in getting something more out of the program then it is recommended too.

11. Get your appetite alongwith u. Its a must.

12. Drinkers get ur cocktail recipes with u.

13. Oh I forgot! Get those traditional dresses with u so that u can enjoy the festivals better (so gujjus get those kediyas and chaniya cholis. though u will get a chance to get them in the first term break too).

14. Get an adequate supply of any special medications that you use. Panjim's got a couple of 24 hr medical shops but still if you are particular abt anything then have it in abundance.

15. Get lots of snacks and stuff - believe me there's no better icebreaker.

16. Yeah one more imp thing- give urself a primer of stuff like MS Office (esp. Excel and Powerpoint), Kotler (debatable but accdng to me recommended), some stuff on accounting and statistics. This kinda stuff allows u to get the hang of things easily.

17. Oh one more imp accessory - headphones. You mite love rock and you mite have a carnatic music loving roomie. Headphones help in the coexistence.

18. If your laptop doesn't have a microphone get an external one. If you buy from college, most probably it will have an inbuilt thing.

19. Don't forget any of those documents that a bank wants for edu loans. And if possible get ur parents along too. As I have said umpteen times - it helps in getting the loan in 24 hrs flat.

20 Above all, don't forget ur brains. You will need them to lose them here (you saw examples in some posts here).

This is all I can come up with for the time being. I haven't taken the pain to list too personal items as they differ widely from person to person. This list can sure be appended to by my esteemed batchmates without citing too many corporate references.

So any other simpler query???

But nice work PP. Just a few addons to the comprehensive list.

1. If you have a ATM/debit card, do bring it along.

2. If you have an SB A/C with an MNC Bank (i.e. Citibank, HSBC etc), pls note they have negligible presence here in Goa with no branches or ATMs. Start banking with an Indian Bank. Banks having significant presence in Panjim are ICICI, HDFC, SBI, Corporation, PNB. I prefer SBI as they have 4 ATMs in Panjim.

3. Get any relevant textbook if you already have1. We will post the inputs on this on the Yahoo Group. No need to buy any, as the library is well stocked. But still if someone has a copy back home, bring it along for ready reference. Else you might have to incurre incalculable opportunity cost. given it could have been used at GIM rather than lying at Home.

Was just kinda thinking even if i have half of those stuffs till date. Nt that i am contradicting one of the best posts of recent times, and boy does it need to be. Neverthless, ppl have even lost their brains without having one and patel, u knw whom am i refering too.

Moving on, i guess Dabral's Umbrella is a lil more we are expecting from this batch, and afterall Taj Mahal was built only once. And come what Pakistan can only allow a concession to release the movie, and nt to make one.

Chal isse pehle my summers get terminated here, and i am made to join the new batch again, lemme get back to wrk...

Well well, It just struck me... Guys, in case u are getting ur own lappies make sure u have the licence of the OS and MS Office u are having on ur lappies. If u don have one, u will be forced to pay for the licence. One of the ethical fundas, a B-School teaches ya. And in case u are having a pirated one, no choice...

plastic money is important - but there are no HSBC, Stanchart and Citibank ATM's in Goa so if they charge you extra for withdrawal from other ATM's then those cards are gonna be costly. If you take an edu loan here u will have to open an account and can request for an ATM card. Even if you dont have any card, we have our own Corp Bank next door where you can transact with a human teller and get ur cash.

Yeah Girish, had the placement work not been there I would be truly bored coz my mentor in Canada thinks he needs to talk global to me once a week and someone as lazy as me is gonna do it all for him here.

Ok PGP1, one more thing, if you wish you can get a list of contacts you have in the corporate world and get it here when u come down.

am goin to Mumbai for two days and won't be appending much to this list. hope delhi holds the front till then.

Well I had to migrate to an Indian Bank before coming down to GIM. & It was a pain to specially get the plastic card prepared from them & delivered at GIM. I have experinced the trouble in getting this plastic card from a Desi Bank. So, if u have to make a switch to a desi bank or have to get an ATM Card issued, pls start the process now. Hopefully, you will get the card till the time you have to leave for GIM.

Now, the advice is still applicable as I discovered some ppl in our batch had left their cards back home, assuming they won't require it here, as they can visit the Bank Branch in Panjim during the day for undertaking any transaction. Now with the classes on, how many days in a week can you do that. & if u have no time in day to visit the Bank, the next option is to visit the ATM during the non working hours, for which you need the damn Card. Else, if you wanna transact with the resident bank at GIM, i.e. Corp Bank, then there is no problemo.

Saurav, I hope u got the names I am refering to above, ppl who can make the weird assumptions elaborated above.

oh, guess u din know that HDFC Bank does it in 7 working days.. And yes, they deliver it to ur postal add or at any branch solely on ur instructions.

If u are talking abt the current Banks in Panjim and arn with the likes of HDFC, then for the past 18 months they have discontinued any branch cash withdrawls even on bearer slips.(Read Savings bank account). Now allowed only on home branch(es). Nw don ask me why???

BTW, isn it foolish on the part of to be managers to dump ATM cards for human tellers, the exception being the Corp Bank on Campus...

It was fun watching this tiny tussle between Saurav and Girish.
