Hi Guys,
1. Is MBA Really Relevant today (considering the finance stream)?
2. Isn't MBA losing its shine against the traditional certifications like CA/CS/CWA/CFA etc?
3. Is it true that if you want to pursue Finance as a specialisation, then you need some added qualification with your MBA (Fin.) degree?
Chetan,
I am absolutely speechless at you patience and dedication towards Finance. You deserve respect, my friend and InshaAllah you will find success in Equity Research field soon...very soon. Man, you are not a failure, you are an inspiration for all those non-IIM guys who are struggling to find a footing in the Finance domain of their choice.
MBA is not a relevant degree for Finance stream, at all. I have studied MSc Management (which is very much like the PGDBM) from Warwick B School in the UK and I think I have wasted my time & money. Sure I have studied corporate finance + asset classes etc but I can NOT claim that I am suitable for an I-Bank or even a good KPO. MBA is useless for finance lovers since we have to forcible study modules like marketing, HR, International Business etc.
Even MSc Finance qualification provided by several UK Unis are in adequate, my flatmate was a MSc Finance student at Warwick and he used to regret his decision of studying the degree since he felt that the curriculum is outdated and time spent is very very less.
Qualifications like CFA, CFP and FRM are best for finance stream. CA/CS are okay since those give access to back office roles.
Once I had a nice little chat with a trader working at the London office of Royal Bank of Scotland and he said an MBA is like jack of all trades and at the trading floor if a person says he has an MBA, everybody laughs at him. When I asked him what is the relevant degree for an entry in finance, I was replied that there are none, but a bachelors/masters degree in finance or economics with a certificate of threshold competency (eg. Series 7 for USA, IMC for UK and NCFM for India) can do the impact.
As far as my knowledge goes until a candidate is a CFA Charter holder he/she is not really superior in any way to the guys who aren't registered for the CFA. Part qualification for CA may be useful but part qualification for CFA is not useful for entry in finance. Have a look at this LinkIn discussion thread: CFA Careers group | LinkedIn
Cheers and all the best to us all!

Hey Rex,
U took a perfect decision so dont worry about that..there is no use hanging on to a system which doesnt even treat u as a regular employee.
Its good that u have decided to prepare for ssc & bank po exams as they will provide you the required stable job and a good career as well.
Dont worry for the 1 yr. which went by..just concentrate on the future. just gather all the courage and determination and move on towards your goal. Since u dont have to devote time in a full time job just utilize this time to the fullest.
Have faith in your capabilities..im sure ul do it!
All the Best!
hi
I gave cat-2010 and other exams like fms, snap, jmet but didnot receive any call as my score was low in all exams.(cat %ile-83, snap score-105, jmet score-75).
I have done B-Tech in Computer Science and Engg.(2007-2011) and have done internship from Infosys Technologies Ltd. and will be placed as System Engineer in the same company by july month. I am not satisfied with my degree and also don't like much, working as Computer Engg. I am looking forward to few years of good learning experience.I want to prepare for MBA again and give it a shot but everytime i think of doing MBA i have to rethink which MBA specialization and will it not turn out to be same not so good experience as being a Computer Engg. When I try to narrow down my interests and align them to some specialization i dont get any clear solution as to what should i opt for.So someone please help as to how should i choose which MBA and which B-School i should target for?The problem is I dont know exactly what course interests me the most and what can i follow to end and with passion?
I am interested in reading books and learning new English words and their usage, origin, etc.
I also like solving puzzles. In cat 2010,I thought i am good at DI and it will be most scoring section but i scored max in English section though i attempted least in it and it was toughest in paper. As far as the prep goes for cat 2011 and also other papers i havent started preparing for it as i have returned from Infosys after completing my internship few days back.So i wanted to be clear on my thoughts before actually start preparing again.

hi,
for time being your focus should be on preparing for cat again.since u have given cat earlier, your main focus should be on working with the weaker areas..regarding ur interest on specialisation u can read some books on various specialisation like operation management, marketing, finance, hr , information systems..dis shd give u some idea regrading your interest and once done with interest den target colleges can be identified
Guys need some advice. Just graduated from college and have my joining after December. So i am free till then. I was planning to work in some NGOs. So do NGOs give minimal paid internships to students. And how tough is the selection process in the NGOs which come under the UN. Any advice?
And is there some other work that i can do for 6 mnts that will help my profile because i am planning to do an MBA in the future.
Here I am with a strange query. I took the CAT for the fourth time this year and thanks to wierd normalization and other got only 97.39. I had other calls like XLRI, IIFT, SJMSOM, MDI, SIBM etc. Out of these I had only IIFT D converted and took admission. However due to some unavoidable circumstances, I had to get my campus changed to Kolk. My query is, is IIFT K worth joining or would you suggest me to take the CAT once more. If I do take the CAT, I would be attempting it the fifth time and would have 4 years of IT experience by the time I feel the form....

Hi buddy!!
I would say if u r not satisfied by ur current performance and feel that u can score better next time then u should give urself one more chance .U will have healthy experience then and since u cracked almost all exams this year so it won't be too much risky for a person like you to give another shot. It's true that CAT results are little bit uncertain these year but there are some other great insttitutes which u can target like FMS,XLRI,SIBM-P,IIT-B,IIT-D,IIFT-D etc.
It's better to give another shot rather then repenting for whole life that u could have done better.......
All the best and cheers.....:-)

Level of both delhi and kolkata campus is same. The only difference is that campus nd hostel life in kolkata is not same as in delhi. And except couple of companies there is no restriction for kolkata students in placements. In my opinion you should take iift kolkata. Had it been your first or second try I would have asked you to go for another try. But you really can't trust cat anymore. Last year I had sibm pune convert but left it hoping to crack cat this year nd this year I didn't even got call from sibm pune apart from cat fiasco. No one is doubting your capability but you don't know what will happen next year. There are lot of factors that needs to work in your side. And iift is really a good college too.
Above post is for crazy customer
Hi Puys,
Here goes my story about doing MBA in India( well, before starting to study only
)
My Background:
Academics:
Std. Xth - 72 % ( Maharashtra Board )
Std. XIIth - 61 % ( NCERT syllabus - Goa Board):splat:
B.E. Engg(C.S.E) - 65 % (VTU,Karnataka)
Working Experience:
Accenture Private Services Ltd. - 10 Months till date.:D
Other Activities:
Chess Player-- have been representing my instituition or company for chess from the past 8 years. But, havent won any STATE- level competitions.
Event Management-- Have regurlarly participated/ organized events like University level Athletic meets, Technical fests, meet ups, etc
quiz, puzzles,Apti -- Relatively comfortable with Apti, puzzles, quiz, GD's etc.( but not upto MBA level ). Had no problem of these skills when i had attended placements after college.
MBA Inspiration & Decision:
I had no MBA dreams as such in my final year of engg.I just wanted to be a Software Engineer and get placed in a good company in campus.
And I managed to do it and got into Accenture.
Initially, I was content with what I was doing.Exicited about the corporate world, IT world, salary
, Parties, etc etc
But, then my project changed and the bad times started to erupt.
everything changed. Being a Java developer, I had to work on shell scripts n other stuff and uptill now i have lost touch with Java, even though, my Primary skill is Java.
And more other such issues/greviances which I do not want to discuss here.
With no offence to Accenture, it is the same condition in most of the Service based companies in India.( My frends from other companies are also in the same situation)
So, wat next ? was the question buzzing around me for a while.
My ambition was to become a Software Engg. I have done that and have to move on.
I saw the profiles of Top level Management in my company and as expected, found all of them having an IIM or IIT or other university double degrees abroad.
So,If i was to continue here only, I would be at the TL(Team Leader) position here after 5-6 years from now, doing the same unchallenging work.I cannot switch to other companies(read Product companies here) due to my poor technical experience.
This is when a friend and colleague inspired me about MBA-benefits,process, etc etc. I was nevr interested in MS or M.Tech.So, naturally, choosing to do MBA was not difficult.
I researched for over 3 months on prospects of MBA in India.Saw many people with BE+2-3 work exp in IT company+MBA now doing well.the profiles looked inspiring.then, the pay packages, the Job profiles/Roles , the wide scopes for me, began to appear, if I were to do MBA.
By then, I had decided that I would be doing MBA and targeted three academic years ( 2012-14, 2013-15,2014-16) to get through in 2 year full MBA course in any of the top B-Schools.
Preparation till now:
List of top B-colleges in india, Entrance exams, placements, notifications, etc etc
Started solving Quant,DI,DS,LR,Verbal problems & also preparing for GD-PI
Getting into IMS for July batch.
Regularly following PG for updates and info.
And now comes the Worry:
Worry:
Looking at my academic performances, I know it is a crime to even dream of an IIM or XLRI seat.
After checking the Selection Criteria's of IIM's I'm still more demotivated. And also for the fact that people with 99.7 + percentile also are unsure of a seat in IIM, makes me feel a bit depressed..
And top colleges which do not consider academic background at the time of calls, given I do well in Entrance exams, I would still face the same issue in PI's(obvious that they would be questioning me on academic stuff)
So, is it worth spending thousands and practising hard for CAT, as no matter what, I would never get into IIM's or any other top notch college?
OR
Is it worth to sacrifice two years of salary+Exp+Education Loan for MBA to study in a Tier-3 or Tier-4 college.
Query:
As you all Puys see, I'm in a fix about whether to continuing preparing or leave it right away and concentrate on my IT career.
Some of you might be thinking that, " I may be counting my chickens before they hatch", but that is what I can predict about myself.
Need your views on this Puys.I assure you that I'll strive hard for preparing and despite poor academic background,I believe that I have a changed attitude(or because of the Work Frustration
) to reach my goal.

Guys, I have converted Welingkar MMS. Can you tell me if it a good B-school or I should give one more try for JBIMS.
Pros - I have caste advantage
Cons - I am already 25 no & seeing the MH-CET pattern this year I am worried as to how the pattern will be next year.

Hey buddy,
First of all hats off to u, at least u r trying and giving ur best to be in the best B-school
Wellingkar has a brand name, but JB is among the best B-school in india.
Age shouldn't be a factor if you are working rite now and u r gaining relevant work experience.
As far as CET is concerned if u've scored is less so did everyones else so dont bother much just give ur best. It all depends on the paper pattern for CET sometimes it is very easy, hence cutoff are very high. If the paper will be tough the cut will come down
Still if ur worried, Wellingkar is a nice b-school.
