posting it from another thread,
I am not answering anybody's query but while skimming htru some of posts, I am putting some points form my experience:
Do not leave the job for cAT, as it adds presssure to you on the D Day, also if you have job it gives you mental support, that if CAT is lost not evrything is lost
Try taking jobs which will be more aligned to your field of interest when u will go for MBA, I know it is quite tuff to do this
Also do not feel that IT jobs are bad or of no use, the thing is they are most job generator jobs, look into positves of it, like onsite, exposure presentations client interaction
If your are a mehcnanical/civil/elcetronics engineer prefer job of your field over IT jos, as they make u more relevant in terms of applying to schools abroad as well as in india
I will suggest evrybody to work somewhere or the other, as this year i think IIM K didint even called a 99.8 %iler fresehr, they preferred work ex, so it very very rucial right now
IF you think u cannot study with job, think over gaina, I know people who quit the jobs could not make th cut and later on repent, as your admison depends on a lot of factors which u will come to know as u go forward in this journey
Do not sacrifice evrything for CAT, believe me it does not wokr that way, poeple keep chucking onsite and many other things, and later on repenet again
be serious in your job and do well there, it will give u a high or your cat exam
CAt is more about mental prep then academic
There lot of other things but i think these are the imp ones
Waiting for another MAT may be in my opinion not a good option.
I will rather recommend you to search for a college which provides you quality education along with placements.
One college which I will like you to consider is Skyline Business School, Gurgaon.
It is ranked 9 in the northern region and have a strong corporate relationship.
They have faculty from top colleges like IIM,XLRI,FMS and many more.
They also provide 100% quality placements along with excellent management skills.
Most important I will like you to consider is there fee structure, which I thik is very low.
You have option to pay the fees in instalments and you can also get bank loan facility.
Schlorship are available almost to each and every admitted students.
Best wishes:)
I have a similar issue.
I plan to quit my job nect year in july and prepare for cat from aug-oct.
Please some one answer the folowing:
1) will i be asked abt this in any of the interviews? (gd/pi start in march. so, till march 2010, i would be idle for 6 months)?
2) is this option justified?
3)How can i justify this when asked in an interview?

Yes, you might be asked. You should be prepared with the answer for the same with good enough reason.
2) is this option justified?
Yes, it is fine option to go for. Many people in past have opted for it.
3)How can i justify this when asked in an interview?
Can be discussed later .. .for time being , it is better to focus on preparation of written exams and get good scores. There will be dedicated threads for GDPI queries once the results are out and you will get lot of suggestions during that time as there will be many people in same situation.

Hi Seniors,
I am working in an IT firm. I have experience of 3 years now.
Last year i had given all MBA exams but wasn't able to convert any call. I am not able to give time to MBA Preparation because of work.
I think of quitting the job in sep/oct this year and focus fully on MBA Preparation. till then my experience would be 3.5 years.
1) But quittting a job a good option?
2) will i be asked abt this in any of the interviews? (gd/pi start in march. so, till march 2010, i would be idle for 6 months)?

Reg question 2 : I too was in your shoes . I left my job and prepared for 6-7 months . Whenever I was asked about my job during interview,I confidently told about my job profile and NEVER TOLD about my quiting of job in ADVANCE. In most of the cases (90%) , I successfully moved ahead with the next question.
/snip..../
I am in a big dilemma right now and will appreciate any kind of help. I appeared for CAT 2009 and other entrance exams. Season was pretty ok and I had calls from IIM-L,I,K,MDI,IIFT,IMT-G,SIBM,SCMHRD. As for my profile, I have 2.5 years of work-ex in an IT company and when I could not take the crap anymore, I quit and joined my father in our family manufacturing business. It is a small setup and my father has been running it according to his own comfort level. By the time I appeared for my interviews I had around 40 months of total experience.
As expected, in all the interviews I was asked as to what will I do after my MBA and I told that I want to start something of my own. It was the only way I could defend my work profile and frankly speaking this is what I want to do. I do not want to sit for placements after my MBA. I was pretty hopeful of a convert from one of the better b-schools I had calls from. I have good acads and a balanced profile but may be I was not able to sell it to the panelists and got booted out everywhere. At the end I had final converts from IMT-G and SIBM-P with a waitlist at IIFT-K which I did not reserve. I was pretty adamant that of all the calls I had, I would go for only IIM-L, MDI, IIM-I, IIM-K, IIFT in that order. No offence meant to other instis but this was and still is my aspiration level. I have already given up my seat at IMT-G and did not reserve my seat at IIFT-K.
Now this is where the problem begins. I have not been able to develop much interest in our current manufacturing business as I do not see the point of doing the same thing which everyone else is doing. I want to be engaged in something where I have the chance of using my creative skills. I want to work in an atmosphere with like-minded people. I have some really innovative ideas of my own but I do not have the two most important things needed to start a business - A good team and Cash. Cash can be raised but for that one needs to have good credentials(read - an MBA from a good insti) and for a team you need to have a good network, like minded people, again something which a good b-school can provide. All the people I know are either satisfied with their jobs or are not willing to take a risk and start something on our own.
I am 26 and in a year or two my family will start pestering me for marriage. My family structure is such that I cannot go for an MBA once I get married. Just a couple of days back, my SIBM-P waitlist got cleared and though I had pretty much decided that I will not take it, I am now thinking again about it. The problem is that I do not have anything to do right now. There is a family business but I don't have much interest in it and even if I go for SIBM-P, again it will be a compromise as I do not want to go there. It seems more like an escape mechanism to me to run away from the harsh reality of not being able to do what I want to do. There is the option of taking CAT again but seeing the way things have been in CAT 2009, there is no guarantee that it will not be a repeat show and moreover I will have 5 years of work-ex by next year so my choice of colleges will be very limited.
I am mighty confused right now as joining SIBM-P will be a big compromise for me and sitting idle at home with a family business where I have no interest in, isn't fun either.
I have time till tomorrow to confirm my admission at SIBM-P and need your inputs on what to do next. I know I may be asking for too much but still can any of you give some advice?
With due respect to your aspirations , I would like to say why are you trying to cut your leg with own axe?? Be practical man . Your attitude may land you nowhere. Entrance tests these days are highly unpredictable. I have seen case where person got 98%tile in one season and a mere 75 %tile in next. You already have done a mistake (atleast according to me ) by leaving IMT -G , NOW please dont repeat the same by leaving SIBM-P. I think having more work ex will only take you far with realism ... perhaps then an executive MBA may be done by you. I think being 26 , workex of 4 yrs ,+ clouds of marriage over you... Its high time to accept offer of SIBM-P!!!

I can understand your dilemna. You should have joined IMT G but thats history now.Do not miss on SIBM Pune.Reading your post I figure out that you have the potential to get into better B schools but you also need to understand that you have constraints. With marriage knocking on your door and to add to it your lack of interest in your FB will make the situation even worst.
SIBM P is a decent college. After all you are not looking for a placements (SIBM has good placements !!).You want to start your own venture. You will surely get like minded ppl in SIBM.
Anyway decision is going to be yours'
I am 2009 B.E. passout. I worked in a software company for 5 months and resigned in Feb 2010. Then I joined my family business. I will be giving CAT 2010. I want to know that what will be my work-ex(will it be total period or only 5 months)?

Ideally your work ex will be counted as 5 months but you can always justify and show the time you spent in your family business.

But didn't the interviewer came 2 know abt ur quitting the job? Becuase we mention that in the application form? And in the interviews where you were asked abt this, what did u answer? were the panelists convinced?

Andy..
I have sent you a PM.. please have a look at that....
Hi Puys,
I'm a Telecom engg with on and off exp for the past 2 years. I've given the CAT once in 2007 and scored 60 without studying. I guess that's bad, but I think I can still make it while preparing properly for about 5 months...which I've already started.
In 2008, joined work and since then the on and off... I can see I'm more satisfied talking to people and with doing analysis and management rather than actual Techie work; though I'd still like to stay on with Telecom;
Also did soem System Integration work and found that a lot of fun, it had to do with consulting also. I was intrigued and I then thought the combination was awesome. MBA + still being in Telecom + continuously working. BUT there are so many issues... but .. I need to deal with the pressure.. I am aware of that...
I want to go for an MBA, so I can add some knowledge to the 2 years I've been going so slow in plus that I can't see myself doing purely technical work, and then age is another factor. I need to up my education.
So now I'm considering part-time or distance.
1.) Is any such thing as one being better than the other.. I need to continue earning as I have no savings. I support the family so keeping a job alongside is Important!!
Might go for Full time LATER in life, but i have no choice now really. And this may turn out more fruitful anyways.
2.) I'm very unsure about whether a 'good' B-school will actually take me because of my on-&-off experience,...
3.) I cannot afford the really high ranked colleges, but I will be looking into scholarships too and external funding. But I still want to get the degree from the best possible place. I even have to select FEW colleges and narrow the list so that I don't spend too much just applying here and there...
What can you all suggest?? If i can get answers to ANY of these queries I will be sooo grateful.
Thanks a LOT!

Hi,
In my opinion , if you are considering only 2 options i.e. part time or distance learning , then going for Part Time MBA is better option. Most of the institutes conducting part time MBA conduct weekend classes. So, you can carry on along with your job easily.
2.) I'm very unsure about whether a 'good' B-school will actually take me because of my on-&-off experience,...
This depends on how convincingly you defend the time when you stopped working. With appropiate justification, getting into the good B-School conducting part time MBA program won't be a difficulty.
3.) I cannot afford the really high ranked colleges, but I will be looking into scholarships too and external funding.
Once you get into good b-school , then funding is not a big issue these days, There are different funding schemes available in market .
All the best,
Varun
Hi Phoenix,

In most of the interviews they won't ask about job breaks.... For some institutes the form explicitly asks you to enter such information. Tackling these questions is not much of a problem as long as the conviction comes out.
Hi,
I am CA by profession..........working in mfg industry since last 4 months and i didnt like this job atall..........
I have interest for Taxation and on other hand i am interested in MBA (only IIM)too and heared abt CFA exams too.
CAt,10 will be my first attempt and dilemma to prepare for CAT or not,i have started studies just now.So i am not confident that will get into IIM as no preparation yet.
So i am confused, knowing the high uncertainty of getting into IIM (if i clear in CAT,11 i will be 26 yrs by then) to study for the CAT or not.Or,just leave this and concentrate getting job in taxation area or go for CFA since it is good degree.
By nature i like creativity or something new in my work
Please help me
Thanks

First of all get your mind out from all of these, focus on one or two things at a time. You are a CA by 24, that is exceptional i would say, you are suffering from job blues. This is a common occurrence once we leave college and studies life and enter into professional lives.
Remember "there are no ideal jobs" If you want to appear for CAT do it, you have enough time believe me. There comes a time when you stop thinking about the age or years of life. I have known people who have cleared CAT even in 27-28 years. Leave CFA focus on your job and MBA. 3-4 hours a day from now on till November end is enough for CAT preparations.
Chill Man, if you worry so much, who is going to fix what you want from life???

Hi Andy ,
It has been rightly said by Subash "In most of the interviews they won't ask about job breaks" unless you compel them!! . If you state this very fact about quiting of job in "tell abt yourself " .. you will be bombarded with the questions regarding it. eg : Were you incapable to handle pressure / balance of wrk? were you not satisfied with your job , if so why ? How will you support your risk taking ability? what will you do if you didnt get admission anywhr ?
So instead of exposing your weakness straightaway and making yourself a virtual prey to the predators ... AVOID IT !! Also dnt ever sound /look nervous while explaining your job . Let the interviewers caught you and there is high possibility that you may just skip getting caught. it depends on you how you direct your interview (atleast by telling "tell abt urself properly". tell you have xx months of wrk ex instead of I "worked" for xx months

Well you are stating that you are not confident that you will get into IIM... Mark my words.. you wont !!!!.....
Unless you dont believe in yourself .. you will never be able to do it....
There is still enough time and if CAT turns out to be the way it was this year.. you should not have problem at all..
Anyway...You can still go for CAT next year.. age should never bother you .... We have classmates who are even married.
You also have an option for 1 year MBA at colleges like ISB and Great Lakes and plenty of options abroad.
hello dear
ca by profession...age 24....cleared one of the toughest exams and still u doubt urself.
interested in taxation and mba both....
u say interested in mba and then say i m in a dilemma whether or not to sit for cat.
u r not satisfied by ur current job...leave it....age is on ur side...u have so much of energy...
well here is what i have to suggest....
change the job which is making u mad...go for the taxation field..its ur interest afterall
sit for cat'11...dont do it now...u r already feeling low...work for sumtym...
meet people...enjoy life....prepare building blocks for cat'11 step by step....
dont give cat this year...not even to get a feel of it....be a spectator for just this once
but keep on brushing up...gear up for cat'11..i means watever few hours u can spare..
just keep in touch with the latest.....
enjoy ur next job.....
and cumon fellow puy....26 is young very young...and two three years for career building is nothing..
just relax..dont do too much of thinking....enjoy the age..the events..but kep the fire burning..
as of cfa..i thnk u have already covered most of it in ca itself...
dont do it coz its a "good course"
take some time out and read a few pages of cfa course books..
or look for it the great pg thread for cfa...
see if it interests u...if it does then "u always have tym to do wat u like"
as of now.....give a damn to the job which is taking a toll on you...
look for sumthing else....u will definitely find it...a coule of months of drifting wont make a
difference to your career....***conditions apply***
if thr r other problems or constraints then judge urself....
solve the other problems first....
dont let anything cum between u and cat'11
enjoy dear
cheers..weather is gud go have some tea and smoke(optional)
