What is the job profile of a Bank PO?
What are its pros and cons?
Most of you are clueless. I have something valuable to share with you regarding this. Since I am working as a clerk in a leading Public Sector Bank since 6 months, I have observed the job of Probationary Officer closer than most of you.
So what exactly does a PO do? It is quite difficult to draw a line between a clerk’s job and a PO’s job. Most of the work done by a PO can also be allotted to a clerk. But there is one defining difference between a clerk and a PO. That is “Authority, Responsibility and Signing power”. A clerk is just a worker. A PO is a worker with some authority, Responsibility, signing power and decision making power. All the work done by a clerk has to be authorized by an officer. That officer may be a PO or Manager himself. Say, as a clerk, I link aadhar card of a customer, change mobile number, change name, enter NEFT/RTGS, enter deposit/withdrawal slips, enter loan papers or whatever, all my work must be authorized by an officer, only then it will take effect. A PO has this authorization power. It doesn’t mean that a PO can do all this by himself. Even his work should be authorized by a higher officer, i.e Manager.
Coming to signing power. A customer gets a new passbook, officer can sign on it. A DD is printed, officer can sign on it. FD certificates, outgoing letters on behalf of the branch, an officer can sign for manager, whereas clerk never has to sign anywhere except when in cash counter. Decision making power: New account opening- are the documents valid? Withdrawal slip- does the signature match? Is the customer genuine? Eligibility for loan? Etc, decision has to be made by an officer only, not a clerk.
Responsibility: A clerk’s responsibility ends when officer authorizes his work. Say, I debited a wrong account, customer comes and shouts, I point to officer, “yes, I did mistake, but why did you authorize it? You should have checked correctly and sent it back to me for correction, that is what you are paid for” ;) So officer has more responsibility and risk, than a clerk.
So you got selected as a PO, what next? Generally, a medium sized branch has two POs. One will be handling operations, another will be handling Loans and Advances. The one handling operations has to look after cash counter, deposits counter and all other miscellaneous day to day operations of the branch. He has to open the locker, hand over cash to the cashier, authorize his transactions, and at the last, after tallying, check the cash and keep it back into the locker. Even authorizing NEFT/RTGS, dealing with Cheques, other miscellaneous customer service activities come under his purview.
Another PO looks after Loans and Advances. This is somewhat serious business. Dealing with loan proposals, sleeping over them, dealing with huge paper work, tedious loan entry processes, dealing with NPA, answering your bosses sitting in controlling offices etc.

The richest feature of a job in banking is, PUBLIC INTERACTION. Though some people take it as a headache, it is the thing that makes you a VIP in society. Working in a bank, you get near and dear to so many people from all walks of life. Poor people, farmers, roadside vendors, hotel owners, rich traders, businessmen, local leaders, politicians, police what more! Especially in villages, you will be treated as a VIP. This is because, you deal with their MONEY. People pay respect and attention to you if they have something in stake with you. This sense of deep association with public is unique to a banker which is absent in your tech jobs irrespective of whether it may be private or public sector.
CONS Public interaction can be a con for some people. Depends on your orientation. I have seen both type of people. A person who is enjoying this job like anything and another one, who got so frustrated and pissed off that, he resigned within 3 months of joining. Apart from that, high pressure is a real thing in banking job. As a clerk, I can maintain a strict 10 to 5 working hours. After 5:00 PM, nobody can stop me from going (except when in cash counter). But an officer usually has to be in branch until the branch is closed and locked out, which is usually 8 or 8-30 (depends on branch, there are FI branches which close at 5:00 PM). An officer can even be called to work on weekends (rare, but its there).
As you get promoted: Being Manager is like being at the peak of pressure and tension. You get banged from both sides- lower and upper, I mean from customers and superior officers. As a clerk or officer, if I come across a quarrelsome customer, Ill try my best to handle him. If it goes over it, I will direct him to manager cabin. That’s it. Manager has to solve his case. He cant direct him to anybody else, because there is nobody above him in the branch :-D :-D Manager has one more headache à TARGETS. He is given targets on loans and deposits, interest and non interest incomes, NPA recoveries and many more. He will be called to meetings and grilled over his performance. His target achievement, performance etc are all linked to marks given to him by his superiors which inturn decides his future career. Once you become an expert manager, banking is your kingdom and you are the King. Upper positions such as Senior manager, Divisional manager, Assistant general manager, General Manager etc are extremely dynamic and powerful posts. Only a highly capable person crosses this “Manager” obstacle and achieve such dreamy positions. Others just strive to survive. T
