acc to me : let ABC a rt angle tri where AB is the height of mountain and from C the ascending process starts ...1 km on the hypotenuse of 30 deg inclination...that is if we take hypotenuse of a 30deg rt tri say DFC.... where CD =1km, DF perp to BC ..... join DE with E at AB such that DE||FB.... again in rt tri thus formed has ang ADE = 60 (the change in elevation ...while moving 1km up the hill)...Draw the fig and try tiilll then I am typing the complete soln.... this way only you can be clear more...on concept...

Refer the attached figure...lets assume ht of mountain as H = AB
In tri CDF .... DF = CD sin30 = 1/2 and CF = CD cos30 = rt3/2
In tri ADE, AE = DE tan 60, ..... DE = BF = (BC-CF)
so, AE = (BC-CF)rt3 = (BC-rt3/2)rt3 ..... also AE = H - BE = H - DF = H-1/2
thus, (H-1/2) = (BC-rt3/2) rt3 .....................(1)
In tri ABC ... AB = BC tan45
so H=BC ................................................. (2)
combining (1) and (2) .... we have
(H-1/2) = (H-rt3/2)rt3
solving for H we get H = 1/(rt3-1) = (rt3+1)/2 ..... Ans
