I'm looking at the Macbook Pro 13 vs a Toshiba Portege vs Sony Vaio EA16.
The Sony has battery+heating issues but is otherwise fantastic.
The Toshiba is a little low on CPU power but is very portable and delivers good performance.
The MBP is a great machine but windows runs only on Bootcamp/Parallels.
If any senior is reading this, will we need to install any Windows-only software on our laptops for B-school? Battery life is most important, I assume, but how much multi-tasking/CPU-intensive applications will we be using?

It will work fine for 4-5 years for sure ,if the lappy continues to run for that time
. i5 - 430M is pretty good .In case u want extended battery lyf then u can go for a 9 cell battery.Does it have a gfx card ?
rob89 Saysguys a lappy with i7 720qm and 512 mb grabhics card or with i5 520m with 1 GB graphics card will be better?
For gaming the i5 wid 1Gb gfx will be better..overall performance of i7 is somewhat better though .

At 40k its a pretty good config.Just 1 thing that i see it lacks is a Gfx card.
I think it is a somewhat long term investment so it will be good to have one.Rest is your decision.
No idea about your 2nd query.

Same config with i3 processor and 500 gb HD is available at 35 k.
Which will give you the same performance for the nature of use you have mentioned.
I hope you are not multimedia specailist and if this is the case avoid i5.

Chesterchaz i do not understand why you always ask everyone here for graphic card which is of no use to most of us here .... you being a gaming enthusiast is a different case all toghther.
Please take my comment in correct spirit, as most of the audience here is not geeky enough to actually understand the purpose of graphics card.
You being most knowledegable of us please guide the people better.
Basically i require it for my MBA.. and am not too much into games and all that stuff... so with this info does my config sound good as i agree its a long term investment and want a good laptop

No offence taken dude :)
I think that its a somewhat long term investment and u never know when in future ..maybe after the MBA u might need to use some heavy softwares too..
Thats the only reason yaar
...With 1-1.5K u can enhance the versatility of ur lap.

Iam planning to buy a new laptop. I went through most of the previous posts and found that majority is going for dell. I went out and inquired about dell and none of the dealers have configuration, which Iam looking for, ready. They say that they can order it for me(which ofcourse I can also do myself). Now its very difficult to pay for laptop when you are unable to see it left and right, infront of you. they have other config and laptop may look similar but there is something missing.
Now all this story is to ask whether dell is really all and above the rest. Can we go for HP, SONY, LENOVO as they have all the configs ready and have demo of them all. Please advise. what are the choices in HP, SONY and Lenovo which we can go for.
My Configuration
Price: 40,000
14" Screen
i3 Processor
4 gb RAM
500 GB Hard disk
1 GB GFX Card

I would suggest visiting a Dell Exclusive or a Dell Experience store, I'm sure you will be able to access all the models there.
You will find the address for the same here.
Also, the Dell Inspiron 14R does not have the option of adding on a graphics card hence the only option you have of getting a laptop with your config is on the studio which starts at ~45k.
An Inspiron 15R for the config mentioned retails for ~42k. You can also look at the Sony Vaio E Series VPCEB14EN/BI though it does not meet your config requirements it does fall within budget.
Guys I've shortlisted to the two detailed below, there are some obvious differences which I will be listing.
Could someone give me inputs on some more esoteric or practically experienced differences please?
