IBM'S are good but expensive and lack value for money.Compaq has good service but overall performance is mediocre.hp is unreliable.but overall compaq would be a safe bet.

For the ADD ONS directly contact the vendor.
Now regardin DELL...heres a simple comparison.
DELL USA - 600m inspiron - 1000USD-1100USD(final price after rebates & taxes) = Rs. 45000-48000 aprrox
DELL INDIA - 600m inspiron - Rs. 53000 + delivery charges + taxes = Rs. 65000 minimum
I hope now u understand the difference
a very good option is to buy a Jet Airways return ticket to singapore for 14k ...
spend a good time there ...
while returning buy a gr8 laptop at cheap rates ....
return to india and u still save a few bucks....
another option... go to singapore with a family member and bring two laptops ..
sell it in india and ur family member gets a free trip as well...
of course all this depends on whether or not u get that 14k return ticket to singapore.....

dat indeeed is funny...but certainly a goood option 😉
wait to join ur respective B schools and try to get numbers of ppl interested in getting a laptop and then u can go for a bulk deal.when we negotiated the price we got models for atleast 10-12,000 less than the price mik has quoted now. and tht was an yr ago when prices were higher.we have an ibm R51(centrino,combo etc) for 62k.
at a college where laptops are not compulsory the numbers might be few and u might not get the best deal so try n look at website of colleges which prescribe a model and vendor quotes a price. nmims is one such b school...try to strike a deal closest to tht...u might not get exactly that as they r 200+ students.
njoi ur first lesson in negotiation skills.
But in place u dont have such numbers required for such a bulk buying the only option for a good config is to get it thro someone frm abroad. Here's my take on the companies.
TOSHIBA-good build but xpensive comparitively
IBM-Sturdy and secure, truly built to last again expensive
DELL- value for money and service in india is excellent
COMPAQ- Average performer though a lot lower than DELL
HP-havent got any review on hp as yet
ACER - best buy , feature rich but forget high end applications

Depend on ur needs.A laptop defintely looks cooler but that doesnt mean it is faster for running hardcore gaming.Tell me ur needs. Are u a gamer? Or just basic applications and also the config that u need.Maybe then someone on this thread can help u better

Sony ViaO is cool too....
ACER & Zenith are value for money but skepticalbout their services
By the way can some one put up an optimum configuration which i can get for Rs. 50k
512 MB ram is a must i think....
And wot i dont get wots the differnce between Centrino Process & Intel M processor..Centrino clocks 1.6 Ghz while Intel M 3.02 Ghz

For the basics between the processors there is an excellent post by stingrae a few pages back.Do check it out.The VAIO is kewl but 2 expensive fopr its class.Personally i feel it isnt worth the money coz u wud get a toshiba for the same amount. But it is a matter of personal choice
Tell me from where ur gonna buy the laptop? Here or abroad
I have both options open
If ask my frend from US to bring one for me , do i loose on warranty or service?

Neither if u r willing to shell out a few extra dollars.Coz for afew extra dollars most of them offer international warranties.Plus the overall difference in the price of a laptop fm here and there comes out to nearly 10-15k.PLUS CUSTOMIZTION IS NOT EASY IN INDIAN MODELS.

I am not exactly sure about bank policies but i dont think u can.In that case go for DELL or acer models
