Buying A Laptop

ankur4581 Says
The difference is due to the fact that i'll be buying it in the name of a Dell employee.

Oh hey... same here!
Could someone please tell me if there are any known problems that could crop up cuz the laptop is purchased under someone elses name? If its a known person/friend, then no issues.
In my case, the dealer belongs to the sales division... I got to know him through a long chain of friends
.
k..grt..so u mean to say all Dell employees will be getting a gud discount on their lappys, huh....
then i should also catch hold of some one from Dell soon

Yes dude:). May b u should strike a friendship with the Dell customer service rep. Wish u luck!! Then we could compare our discounts:).

I don't think there should be any issue. It's like this - I buy a phone in another's name. Will it lead to any difference? NOt really, as I have a proper bill with me. Though, do clarify the matter with the dell guy.

Hey guys can anyone suggest me which one to go for

Dell XPS series or the Dell inspiron series...
i mean which one is better.. as per performance and everything.
Money is not a constraint.
So pros and cons other than that will be really helpful
.Thanks in advance

PS: I was thinking of going for Dell inspiron 1720 laptop

XPS would surely be better - rest assured. And if money is no bar, try latitude series too.

First things first: The Inspiron range has an old design and does not look as good as the XPS range.

Second, the 1720 is a "large" laptop and is used as a desktop replacement.

So, if you are not planning to travel with the laptop, avoid this as it can weigh more than 3.5kg!

Final advice: Go in for XPS. Has been voted as one of the best overall (looks, performance and value).

Cheers!

Thanks for the valuable insight , however i had 2 minor problems with XPS
1st why is XPS 1330 laptop costly than the 1530 one any reasons??
i mean yeah the processor range starts from 1.83 Ghz and 160 gb in 1530 but shouldnt be it the other way round?

and what about the battery should one go for 6 cell or 9 cell?? 9 cell would be longer lasting but wud it make the notebook much heavy??

and the customise option asks for partition, i mean one can do it ourselves isnt it? should we shell out extra money for partitioned hard drives is there a catch?

1.1330 is a smaller screen laptop...the electronics semiconductor technology goes advanced with a smaller size...thats y its slightly costly.
2. 6 cell is enough...9 cell battery is costly too.
3. if you do partition yourself, vista license may become void and u lose ur warranty

I guess they will provide a VISTA CDs..isn't it??
I wanted to know if one should go for HDD partition. Dell charges some 400-500 Rupees for it. What does HDD partition help me? Thanks!

It'll be really really helpful when the system crashes...In case the disk is partitioned, the OS drive can be formatted and reinstalled. Your data will be completely safe.
If not, just to recover data, you'll have to attach another primary HDD, make your disk the slave, copy data and then reinstall OS.
Its seriously worth it!

I also have the same issue... actually they partition the drive in two parts...
I want to go in for 4 drives in the hard disk.... So guys any ideas should we go for it..??
someone said here about the warranty being void if we do it ourselves if that is the case i would be really worried

Sorry for sounding stupid, but when a disk crashes, does only that particular partition gets affected or will the entire disk be affected? Because if the entire disk gets affected, partition is of no use! So harenik, when u say my data will be completely safe which data do u refer to? The entire disk data?
Pl forgive my ignorance.

As far as i know, if the disk crashes, the entire disk goes... Cuz the partition is virtual! What i'm talking about is problems related to software/OS... In cases where you'll have to reinstall the OS, which entails formatting the drive. In this case, your data will be safe in another drive...

Actually, I think Dell provides two modes of installation... One where a service person helps you out (costs extra) but you can get it customised according to your needs by him, the other where you do everything yourself.
The former is called 'Classic' installation. Just enquire about this from your dealer and go for this one...

Hi Everyone ! I am a newbie in terms of the knowhow of a laptop. Although I've used the IBM Lenovo Thinkpad T-60 and T-61, I dont have much knowledge about the value for money pieces.

I was shown this piece at a retail store and I was pretty impressed with it. Details :
HP DV 6767 TX.
Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo (1.86 GHz)
3 GB DDR2 RAM.
250 GB.
15.4''
Vista Home Premium
Nvidia 256 MB.
51K + taxes.

Kindly give me your feedback regarding it. This was the asking price. I did not negotiate. Also, could you suggest me similar configs in the same price range (45-55)?

Regards.

adding to this. you can't partition laptop drives that easily. as the recovery drive is linked by a hash-table index to the primary drive. so for partition, to link to the other drives, a new index has to be formed. its done by a simple software, so if anyone has that its an easy job, that why they charge just 516 rs for it.
