Buying A Laptop

Hi Everyone ! I am a newbie in terms of the knowhow of a laptop. Although I've used the IBM Lenovo Thinkpad T-60 and T-61, I dont have much knowledge about the value for money pieces.

I was shown this piece at a retail store and I was pretty impressed with it. Details :
HP DV 6767 TX.
Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo (1.86 GHz)
3 GB DDR2 RAM.
250 GB.
15.4''
Vista Home Premium
Nvidia 256 MB.
51K + taxes.

Kindly give me your feedback regarding it. This was the asking price. I did not negotiate. Also, could you suggest me similar configs in the same price range (45-55)?

Regards.

its an awesome config. 3 of my friends have bought this model in college. good performance. sturdy computer, and really really good audio. the price is pretty ok. on total not more than 54k (taxes included). thats the price in bhopal. bargain a bit if reqd, and if they dont decrease price, ask for accessories. i amsure they would be ble to fit in those in their price.

and the customise option asks for partition, i mean one can do it ourselves isnt it? should we shell out extra money for partitioned hard drives is there a catch?

3. if you do partition yourself, vista license may become void and u lose ur warranty

get_amazed Says
adding to this. you can't partition laptop drives that easily. as the recovery drive is linked by a hash-table index to the primary drive. so for partition, to link to the other drives, a new index has to be formed. its done by a simple software, so if anyone has that its an easy job, that why they charge just 516 rs for it.

afaik .... incorrect partitioning "technically" voids ur warranty ... but then.. there's always the "restore to factory settings" option .... where u go through the entire "backup-partition-format-install" process .... and get back to the state ur lappy was when u first took it out of the box .... so when u need support ... the service center has no way of knowing what u've been doing with ur lappy ..... of course, u need the rescue disks provided by dell..

also .... if u intend installing other operating systems (GNU/Linux, mac OSx86) ... then a little knowledge about partitioning and a LOT of fiddling-around helps !!

.... or .. if u just intend optimizing ur partitions, u can resize the drives ... with a tool windows provides (check attachment)..... (this way, u don't void the warranty, u have ur restore partition, and u get partitioning the way u want it!!) :)

u only need to take care that u don't cause any physical damage to the HDD .. ....

edit : i have partitioned my hdd dunno how many times ..... opened my lappy, cleaned the heatsink-fan .. etc ... and i can still go to sony-service ......... cuz they don't know i've done it 😉 ... and they dunno i've posted on this forum

As far as I remember, the piece that he showed me was in black. It was a designed piece, somewhat more like an artists's edition on the inside. Any other feedback ?

Great thread!!!

I'm in a big mental mess over tha lappie now. I was thinking more-or-less on lines of Dell XPS. But now, there is a new contender around.

I was basically looking at a 3gb RAM, 1.83/2.1 Ghz core2duo processor..a 128/256 mb video card..

I have a few questions:
Between Dell and HP, which is the better after sales service provider?
Which has the better speakers?
Should I stick to 128 Mb for the video card, or go upto 256 Mb? (I plan to play Crysis and COD 4)

as for games are considered choice is simple ... go for 256MB ... it not only help in games performance but overall increase performance of whole system ...

it will also comes in handy later on when new version of games & os are released which always demands more graphics than previous version

regarding service, IMO both are more or less equal ...

one more thing to keep in mind when it comes to 256MB Geforce is that they come in DDR2 as well as DDR3. Get DDR3 as it has a higher speed and better performance.

correct ... better check RAM Frequency ... DDR-I has max speed of 400Mhz while DDR - II has max speed of 833MHZ .... above that start DDR - III which can have speed upto 1133 Mhz

my 2p .... if u intend playing Crysis & COD4, get a config with a better graphics chip ..... and a better processor ...

the 8400M isn't enough .... u'll probably get a slideshow at 1280 x 800 (which is the best resolution on the HP 6767) ..... and that with low fx settings !!! .... try n see if u can get something with 8700M/8800M GT ..... or still better ... 7900/7950

the processor (Core Duo T5550) isn't really cutting edge ... and crysis can bring it down to its knees !!!........ look for Core 2 Duo T8000 series here...

ofcoz ... all this will add to the cost ;-)

PS : it's personal experience talking about the 8400M :-|
.... and u can't upgrade a laptop graphics chip :-(
Hi puys !!!!

Hi All,
I intent to buy DELL Inspiron 1525. I have a few queries, :
Processor The base model has Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T7250 (2.0GHz, 2MB Cache, 800 MHz FSB). I have an option of upgrading it. How much would the speed vary with a Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T8100 (2.1GHz, 3MB Cache, 800 MHz FSB) ?
The 6-cell battery offers a backup of abt 4-4.5 hrs. How much does it differ wid a 9 cell battery? (anyone who owns a Dell would be able ?

Someone posted that an employee referral in Dell, can get you heavy discounts, say upto 25-30%... how true is that?
And HP vs Dell, which is a better option.
P.S A review on Dells website says the speaker quality is bad as compared to HP. Plus this lappy gets heated up really fast!
Any thoughts on this?

Firstly, the 6 cell does not give you a 4-4.5 hour battery life. At the most you may get 3 hours (with normal usage). The 4 hour mark is probably only when you are working a document with wireless switched off. The 9 cell battery logically gives you 50% extra life compared to the 6 cell. The T8100 processor is not significantly faster than the T7250. So, you can stick to it. Just that the 8100 is from the Penryn platform (45nm technology) and the 7250 is from the Santarosa platform (60nm technology). The 8100 might give you a slighty better battery life (theoritically), but that's about it. Hope that helps!
