Processor : Go for AMD turion 2 GHz...it's like 3600+, performance is equivalent to 1.6 ghz core 2 duo.
Only benefit of dual core processors is when you are running TWO heavy applications at a time. e.g. Gaming and doing video encoding at once!! Hardly anyone do that kind of tasks at a time!!
Well u have ACER 5101, that has amd 2 GHz processor. With this processor, I can play Counter strike, listen to music in media player, chat and browse at once and everything works perfectly!!
Graphics: Well ma baby has Integrated ATI x1100 with 128 MB shared memory....I can play HD videos at ease on ma system. I have VISTA, and aero desktop runs fine with all effects on. I can play Need for speed : Most Wanted at 800x600 max. settings!! More than enough for casual gamer like me!!
Don't go for intel's integrated graphics solutions...they simply SUCK in 3d!!
Your computer's performance will suffer even in aero!!
RAM: Got it upgraded to 1GB DDR2. Runs vista with AERO max. settings at mind-blowing speeds. With 512 MB DDR2 it crawls with aero and superfetch.
Go for 2 GB only if u are into heavy gaming and for tht go for a notebook with geforce 7300 gs atleast!!
Well...gaming eats battery...whn i'm playing on ma laptop...it eats up ma battery within 1-1.5 hrs. If u have graphics card in ur lappy...expect it to be anywhere between 30-60 mins.
If i do all the stuff except playing games...then it lasts for 2.5-3 hours.
HDD: 60 GB, damn too less?? well nope...way more than enough for O.S. and other programs. Have bought a 3.5" HDD...320 GB capacity..i have kept it in a 3.5" hdd casing...so i have a 320 GB external HDD now!!
It's small enough to be carried in ma laptop's bag!!
Screen : 15.4" glossy screen...is beautiful. Acer, HP's LCD's rocks. Contrast is gr8. Dell, lenovo's LCD's are avg. and SONY's LCD's sucks. They have lowest contrast among them all, and they are bright way too bright....you might need to use sunglasses with them >:) [ Nahi to bachcho aankhe kharaab ho jaayegi ]
Heat....smaller laptops are hotter...laptops with GFX are even hotter, they aren't laptops as they get so hot, you cannot keep them on top of your laps!!
12.4" lappys..well have LEAST value for money...doesn't have performance, have smaller LCD...and are times costlier than normal lappys.
EXPANSION is very limited!!
No way you'll enjoy movies on them. Screen is just way too small.
ppl. buy them bcoz. they are lighter..i keep on wondering wht the hell is the diff. b/w 1.6 KG and 2.4 KG...both are the same practically!!
You can lift both of them comfortably..ya if the diff. would have been like 3-4 KGs. then i would have surely recommended you that 12.4" one.
If u want a lighter options and want to work on the go...try getting a pocket PC...
ACER 5101 : Rs. 33000 + 3000 for ram upgrade!! So lappy for 36k [ inc. taxes]!!
320 GB HDD + casing : 4000 + 450
You will get similar performance lappy...err i mean lappys with same config. in dell for 51000 + taxes and in sony, lenovo for 59000+ taxes!!
hii calling all junta frm kolkata who r going to buy laptops guys lets frm a team so that we can gt better offers.....
Hi
I'd like to clear a few things .....
Only benefit of dual core processors is when you are running TWO heavy applications at a time. e.g. Gaming and doing video encoding at once!! Hardly anyone do that kind of tasks at a time!!This is absolutely NOT how it works .... a dual processor does not mean that each processor is a seperate entity ... infact what happens is that each processor gets different threads of the same program and solves them in parallel, so it infact speeds up your processing time as most programs are not so demanding and thus more time is spent in queue to avail the processor rather than the actual processing part.
has Integrated ATI x1100 with 128 MB shared memory....I can play HD videos at ease on ma system. I have VISTA, and aero desktop runs fine with all effects on. I can play Need for speed : Most Wanted at 800x600 max. settings!! More than enough for casual gamer like me!!The ATI x1100 is a dedicated chipset from ATi.... and its production has been discontinued..... try the ATi x1300 or x1400 onwards (7300 or 7400 onwards in Nvidia).....
also I recommend that you do not go for any chipset with solely shared memory ....
12.4" lappys..well have LEAST value for money...doesn't have performance, have smaller LCD...and are times costlier than normal lappys.
EXPANSION is very limited!!
No way you'll enjoy movies on them. Screen is just way too small.

Though I myself would never buy a small lappy (cos I prefer performance over size/looks), for some people (read Executives) this is probably the best choice as they need the laptops not purely for performance but also for portability.
Agreed that diff between a 1.5 kg and 3 kg laptop does not sound a lot, however I know people who have to lug their laptops around everywhere and would readily pay more for even a difference of 0.5 kg.... again something I wouldnt do but ......
Screen : 15.4" glossy screen...is beautiful. Acer, HP's LCD's rocks. Contrast is gr8. Dell, lenovo's LCD's are avg. and SONY's LCD's sucks. They have lowest contrast among them all, and they are bright way too bright.
Firstly I cant understand where you have got this information ....
Considering which LCD is better and which is worse is a topic open to many interpretations and what might work for me probably might not work for someone else....that being said all LCD's are probably around the same level ...with minor differences amongst different companies ....
I just wanted to point out the dual processor thing and ended up writing a whole lot more, hope this helped you ....
Basically any Business laptop with a 12" screen ....will have to compromise on performance but would be lightweight ....
What kind of performance is compromised for a 12" lappy? Is it processing speeds?
I am eyeing the HP tx1000 which is a 12" tablet PC but touted as an entertainment laptop rather than a business laptop... waiting for it to come out with intel processors...
what performance compromises does one have to make while choosing a 12" laptop like the tx1000 over a 14" or 15" laptop like the HP dv2000/dv6000 series?
lol!! hahahhaha
Dear or dear... if you are running video encoding...and you start playing game on a dual core performance..then your vide encoding performance will drop...but will run at optimum performance!!
Now if you are running, the same thing on single core processor...your video encoding thing will virtuall run at SNAIL's speed!!
Now quit that video encoding thing....and just run the game on it...so now you'll have the same performance as in single core processor!!
Dual core -> 1.6 Ghz
single core -> 2 Ghz
This is the performance thing...practical thing....and the only thing that matters right??
LCD's hahahha...yaar...go to their showrooms...and see them for yourself....and doesn't your frnds have lappy's?? Chck out their LCD's too!! I have seen them all...and sony one..LCD tht i saw was from a model available for 70K!! My mamu has it!! I have goofed around it enough to be sure about it!!
ATI x1100 is integrated graphics chipset!! Not a grapichs card!! successors of it...are ati x1150, and 1200 series!!
7300, 7400 series ones are GRAPHICS CARDS!! not integrated graphics chipsets!!
Same thing is with x1300 and x1400 they are graphics card...not integrated graphics chipsets baba!!
I would never recommend a Sony laptop. I vouch for Sony products, they are beyond amazing, but not in the laptop area. I have at least 5 friends who have bought a Sony vaio, and are regretting to teh extent that their laptops are gatherig dust. It only looks good apparently.
Can somebody else vouch for this? I was blown away by the looks of VAIO. Does someone else have a similar opinion on VAIO.
Plz. help.
Pradeep
Dear...vaio laptops have very high cost...and are VERY DELICATE...ya they have sexy looks...but "woh sirf do din ka shaunk hain"...after one or two dayz it'll be just another lappy for you!!
Don't for the looks dear...you aren't gonna have S*X with it!! [ evil laugh ]
Go for what you are gonna do with it...look at its performance, specs, screen!!
You 'll find the best value for money lappys in... same config in diff. brands :-
1) ACER [ 33k ]
2) Compaq [ 40k-45k ]
3) Dell, HP [ 55k, 50-55k ]
4) Sony, Lenovo [ 59k+ taxes ]

hi,

maldini
Hello !
I wish to buy a lappy, and the most important things i am looking for are as follows :
1 ) Long battery backup : Atleast 5-6 hours
2 ) Lightweight, as much as possible.
Price is not really a constraint. small screen is fine. other features / parameters are not very important.
I am a complete ignoramus when its comes to laptops, so i have no clue whether this combination is possible or not. if yes, which brands / models do you suggest ? if possible, give links.
cheers,
Harshad
Suggest you don't buy 12' screen laptops. I was myself facinated by the looks, size and portability. But after working on it (vis a vis a bigger 15 inch lappy) I found that the 12' is just too small. I guess it's basically meant for corporates regularlyy on the move, who wanna immediately take it out for a presentation o something. It may even cause eyestrain. laptops are 1 time buys guys, at least for like 3 to 4 years. So then make it absolutely sure that it will serve your purpose over this period.
1210 does nto give 9 hrs battery life, unless you buy the 12 cell. Same thing holds true for otehr laptops, but yeah, they may give around 6 hours, owing to the screen size.
Forget abt watching movies on a 12 inch screen. Looks really small. for 1210, I have noticed that the speakers are really not amazing and stuff, for the price tha tyou pay for the machine.
About the weight, come on now, 2.8 or 3.5, big deal dudes !!!! It anyway stays in the bag.
and yeah, the additional battery that gives 8 hours life, does add to the weight (also distorts the looks as it protrudes out). It also heats up faster (might be les surface area, but that's not always)
Pradeep - My advice - don't buy vaio..unless you are getting hte high end version (2000 $+) normal one's are just good looking, but with no substance (a la blondes!!!)
I have at least 4-5 friends who are regretting their decisions to an extent that they hardly even use their vaios. they are slow, cant take load. And for christ's sake man, it is a utility machine.. you dont go about displaying it on the top of yr head. Balance out the looks and the performance with performance getting higher weightage.
Barricuda - no performance difference other than screen size. But at this age (20-40) you don't wanna buy a small screen size, frankly. Just for refernece, work on a 15 inch screen and then a 17. You will noticable a sizable difference, trust me.
Final advice - Try HP or Dell. good config. See upgradation optiion (like more ram if you can add later on, more hard disk etc, off course hard disk is not essential, you get cheaper external hard disks also) HP has some great looking laptops..try for the DV2000 series. they are 14' laptops. Really good ones.
I think dell ends up havign better deals than HP. (except most dell notebooks in india dont have a gfx card).
Btw what are your thoughts on the widescreen deal?
I love HP/Compaq's 14" widescreen laptops personally. I have been using a compaq presario V2000 for the past 2 years. I also have a regular 14" Dell Latitude for work. Both laptops are great for regular bschooling work but the Compaq has the edge when you want to do the extra entertainment stuff(widescreen is fun for this kinda thing).
I am looking for a new laptop and the HP dv2000 (14" widescreen) was on top of the list for a long time.... until HP launched the tx1000 convertible(12" widscreen). The features offered by this lappy are cool and although I dont think the Bschooler has much use for tablet functionality, its just a fun extra to have... of course it costs extra $$$, but I am willing to invest when they come out with the intel version(they are available only with AMDs right now)...
I have had a chance to see first hand most of these laptops in a store and fiddle around with them for a while... I agree with everyone here about the VAIOs... they overpriced and offer no fun extra features.. I think HP laptops even look better than the VAIOs....
I am hugely impressed by the Apple macbooks and their pro versions(13" and 15").... great interfaces and really fun to use, but I'm not ready to make the switch going into a bschool... dont wanna get stuck with compatibility issues(although I think you can use windows on a mac using bootcamp)... I'll perhaps consider the macbooks after finishing bschool....
I have used a friends Toshiba a couple of years back... not sure if they offer anything decent for bschoolers but they can be looked up too
Majority of Lenovo users are huge fans of the sturdy build of the laptop... perfect of college students if you tend to use the laptop in a "rough manner". I have also heard the the keyboard of lenovos are the best among all laptops available today.
Dell laptops are cheap but I always had a leaning towards HP/Compaq coz they are more fun for a little extra $$... they have held the edge in laptop sales over the past year(in the US when compared to Dell) with their options and features... I think I will finally take the plunge the dv2000 or tx1000 unless someone comes up with a brilliant laptop to better these 😃
as a future bschooler portability is a big thing with me thats why I look only for 14" or smaller... 15" are portable too but I can compromise with smaller screen because of them being lighter... 17" I consider purely as desktop replacements
Cnet.com usually has video reviews for most laptops in the market so you can see them in a video if you are not able to find them in a store near you
Hello JUNTA!!!
since most of u are headed to a bschool and buying a laptop for that
my 2 paisa worth on it
In a Bskool u will need GOOD BATTERY LIFE... so go for the 9 celll batteries,
next is the constant carrying around you will do with it... GO FOR A LIGHTER BUSINESS SERIES LAPTOP!
when u look at a 500 Gram diffrential dont ignore it cause 500 gms extra on one shoulder for one hour makes that shoulder pain
ask for the backpacks wwith ur laptops rather than the shoulder bags cause we got backpacks that are very convenient and u hardly feel the pinch.
At the same time unless u r into hardcore gaming the onboard graphics card (even for a dell) will suffice on games like CS, AOE and FIFA. (which are most popular)
If at all u r in a position to invest buy a business series which is an openbox that can be upgraded later and has a longer warranty. Also business series laptops may come with bad speakers (but all anyways buy external or use headphones)
Thats abt it... but the above is mostly relvant for a BSCkooler

man... its more than enough
no one must havet htat config when u go to bskool this june....
its an aweomse piece..
come on now, 500 gms is not that much. Even a paid of jeans weighs more than that !!!
Anyway, I agree to having a bagpack as opposed to a carry bag. It leaves te hands free. A downside is off course that if you are travelling, then you will be allowed only the bagpack. (Usually all flights allow a hand baggage and a laptop bag)
In Bschools, where you will be reading a lot, I guess it makes sense to buy a bigger screen. + little bit of fun factor is always good. like movies, games etc.
If a 12' screen still is preffered, then check if you can borrow for someone and work on one for 3-4 hrs continuously, and ensure that you get no eyestrain. Prob with buying in India is that there is no 30 day moneyback gaurantee. So, my advice is, dont buy in haste, and get stuck later on.
Sherrilnayyar - You have a great config as it is. There is not much of an upgrade you can do also. Just a minor one and it will not be a VFM.
Lenovo laptops are ok I guess. Not really used them. But if you are looking out for it, go for thinkpad series, not the lenovo ones. The thinkpads are teh ruf and tuf ones. And they are really good and sturdy. They even come with this neat little light that lights up the keyboard in the dark. It's a pretty handy feature !
Apple - Would not advice. Expensive and too restrictive.
go for HP or Dell. They are right now a at the top of the heap in the market. DV2000 series from HP is really great (14' ) and DV6000 (which I have) is the best selling laptop today.
forgive me for dumbo ques...
but what all things will b done while in b school on lappie...i mean which applications...if i m not wrong its word, excel, ppt, pdf...
please thro some gyan for my wudb venture...

Thats some nice gear you got. Yes ,upgrading laptops are crazy so make sure you get the full config that you want for the next couple of years at least... and unless you are using Vista I think you have a great config already.
