Buying A Laptop

Hey guys,
I'm planning to buy Dell XPS laptop, it's price on net is about 61K, exlcusive of taxes, how much should it be after including taxes??
also, is it advisable to buy it online??

and well, i'm not much into these things,..the product config. shows that it contains..Dell(TM) Wireless 355 Bluetooth Module; and Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945 Dual Band 802.11a/g 54Mbps Wireless Mini Card..
Does this mean that it is wifi enabled, or i'll have to get PCMCIA card, but this model does not support PCMCIA card, any other option then???

^^^
No issues with buying online from DELL 😃 And if you are a good bargainer, you can get the price to sub-60K inclusive of taxes ;)

Don't worry the XPS M1210 is Wi-Fi equipped, but are you sure you would be okay with a 12"er? The screen and more importantly the keyboard can be really really cramped for you. Suggest you go to any brand's showroom and have a look at any 12" er first..

Cheers!

Most of the PGites are for DELL and HP bulk deal.

Hello all,
Could some one tell me what is the price of this combo in india,

Brand : HP/Lenovo
Processor : Intel Core2 Duo 2+
MotherBoard : Intel 645 chipset
Hardisk - 120GB
Ram - 1GB
inbuilt WebCam,Lan card,modem,IEEE1394,
DVD Combo drive
NVIDIA GeForce/ATI Radon Graphics card 512MB
Soundcard - Creative Soundblaster or equivalent
Embedded altech lansing speakers

This combo is worth around $1200 in Riyadh, so want to know if it is really worth to go for, I may be soon coming back to India...so want to decide whether to get one from here..

^^Thats an excellent price for the configuration. In India, you can expect this for Rs. 70K+ but no manufacturer currently has a GPU with more than 256MB dedicated VRAM.

If you can get this with international warranty for less than $1400, it'd be a good deal..Anything less than $1300, you've hit the jackpot mate! 😉

Hi Mahip

I'm 100% certain that no manufacturer (let alone a manufacturer of Acer's repute) can manage to give such great prices! Also, my knowledge tells me that finding a dedicated GPU on a 14"er (not only in India) is tougher than finding a seat at IIM-A

Are you certain of this price for this config! I couldn't find this on Acer's India website!
If its true, then its day-light robbery for the likes of us! But seriously speaking, I'm sure there's a goof up somewhere!!

Pls do confirm!

Cheers!!

I have checked the same laptop with various dealers and they are selling it for around 38k. I was also confused as it's not on the official site but it is the most recent , just launched 2-3 weeks ago in India.

Yep..its a steal...and prices of Acer are lesser than most brands. But its not a very popular brand. You'll hardly find anyone using it. And what about their after sales service ?....maybe someone using it can pour in their suggestions ?....

Thanx Mahip for the confirmation, I'll go check it up today!

Not entirely true. Acer's price is very competitive and not necessarily lesser..Its actually a very popular brand, which is famous for making reliable and sturdy notebooks. Acer is currently the world's 3 biggest notebook seller behind HP and DELL, having 14.3% of market compared to DELL's 14.9%

I've been using an Acer notebook for the past 16 months and its still flawless. Can't tell you any personal after-sales service experience coz' it has never required any!

I agree Acer prices are a steal...no first hand experience here...but I have seen very satisfied customers using Acer laptops....even the hardcore gaming types...

I think we should also take a look at Acer instead of ignoring it altogether.

Hi Mahip

Went to a couple of Acer showrooms today and checked out the 5572.
I got quoted a price of 39.5K all inclusive (Didn't bargain coz was not very interested)

Now, there are a few discrepancies from the config posted at cyberindian (the link):

The webcam is a sucky 0.3MP..I checked it and didnt like it one bit.
No bluetooth
And as suspected, it does not have a dedicated GPU, rather an integrated Intel GMA950 with shared VRAM..

Am sorry for bothering you again but can you pls clarify with some of the dealers you contacted about the exact config they're offering at 38K.

Thanx mate!

Well.. I guess different people have different experiences. My friend is using an Acer laptop and she strictly advised me to go against it. She said that the battery life is really poor after a few months. She's also had a lot of issues with the motherboard and stuff. The after sales service is extremely poor too... she's been running from pillar to post recently just to get the motherboard replaced..

I won't go to the extent of generalizing it and saying that "Acer laptops are not good" or something but just thought I'd share this with you. Even I was planning to go for Acer because I can get a higher end config for lower price... but my friend just won't let me do that now !

Cheers..

suggest that for 5k or 7k difference, try for a bigger brand..laptops are usually 1 time buys for 3 years at least. HP laptops are also getting cheaper and they offer great looks. Same with Dell.

I have some queries

1) Why isnt anyone considering AMD processors ? (they are much cheaper...)

2) Can someone using a notebook with AMD procesors give feedback regarding
a) heat generated

b) speed as compared to intel core duo. I know core duo is faster theoretically but is there any noticeable difference while playing games/ using office ?. I mean is it worth spending that much extra for it.

c) Are there any driver compatibility issues ?

3) How are compaq computers ? Are they inferior to hp pavillion ?

Pkz do reply...thanks...

1) AMD processors are good but they aren't marketed/bundled well with laptops/PCs. This is the reason why not many people opt for it...And many people who buy later on tend to follow what people before them bought...Hence ..AMD is being considered only next to Intel. Further, Intel regularly comes up with newer versions of processors ...Core Duo...Core 2 Duo...increase of clock speed and all that

2)

a) Haven't used an AMD, but me thinks that Heat generated isn't a botherance with AMD...It depends on the fan present in the laptop...For PCs..we don't really care about heat
b) I think this is one place where Intel beats AMD...Intel Core Duo...or Core 2 Duo for that matter give you good speed with Hi-Graphic games compared to AMD...But for basic Office purposes...both of them are similar
c) Don't know of any compatability issues

3)

Compaq computers are slowly being phased out to give way for HP....So...maintainance/repair may be a problem with them in future... Small things like Blue tooth, Mic...etc may not be available on many Compaq models...

My responses in blue:

1) Why isnt anyone considering AMD processors ? (they are much cheaper...)

Well if people aren't..then they should, especially for the value notebook segment (The Turion X2 proccies aren't exactly "very cheap" when compared to Core Duo from the Intel stable but yes, I'd anyday prefer a Turion X2 over a crippled T2060/T2080 proccy.

2) Can someone using a notebook with AMD procesors give feedback regarding
a) heat generated

Its a myth, my friend. Back in the late 90's AMD processors got infamous for the heat generated and since 2002, these issues were completely resolved. An AMD processor runs as cool or as hot as your Intel processor.

b) speed as compared to intel core duo. I know core duo is faster theoretically but is there any noticeable difference while playing games/ using office ?. I mean is it worth spending that much extra for it.

A similar-specced Core Duo (mind you it'll be more expensive) will be about 5-8% faster than a Turion X2.
No, you will not feel any difference while doing basic/average work like watching movies, gaming, surfing, MS-Office. The only place where the Core Duo completely outshines the Turion X2 is when you're doing some hi-end video-encoding work!

So basically if you're on a tight budget (40K or there about) and need a laptop for basic, everyday work, a Turion X2 is a better alternative than a T2060/T2080 Intel proccy.

c) Are there any driver compatibility issues ?

Nopes. No issues there!

3) How are compaq computers ? Are they inferior to hp pavillion ?

The only difference lies in the build quality and yes in that case..Pavilion>Compaq

Cheers!
