Buying A Laptop

@Redemption

Yes the Dells are custom built,which I believe is a muuuuuch better choice than the prebuilt configs we get here, so can take any amount of time depending on the accessories you have chosen and their availability.

e.g if I opt for their basic stock model with a few easily available parts their tentative (note) date of delivery is after 6 days (as given on the sidebar on its site when you are placing your order).However if I do add some part which isnt that easy to get it can push back that tentative date - like I selected some random part and the date was postponed by 10 days ...so be sure to check your tentative date.

Also that tentative date is what it states - not a sure thing. I did get delivery of my laptop within 3 days of purchase, however they do have a lot of fine print stating that tentative date is not something they have to strictly adhere to. So call up their CC (US CC) before placing your order to make sure.

Also no problems with the adaptors or anything.

Finally the grey area .....
Warranty.
There is no accidental coverage.
The warranty that comes the Laptop is only applicable in US.
So does that mean you need to go to the US to get it repaired? Uh....pretty much....

Your various other options :
1.Insure the damn thing.
2.It is possible to sign an annual contract with private agencies that will charge you a yearly fees and for any part they might have to change, the engineer visits and other misc are free.
3.I have heard from someone that they did get it covered under Dell India warranty by paying a little extra, however this is unverified and thus please make your own enquiries.

This is what bothered me the most while buying my lappy, however I felt that the difference in price made up for it.
My Laptop on Dell India website = 90000 without taxes
on Dell US website = 47000 without taxes, 51000 with taxes

So.... I decided I'd get it insured against accidents and my stupid mistakes, for the rest I left it on God 😁

whats the price that the dealer is offering you ?...and if you've already bought it please tell us about it because im also planning to buy the same...

hey redemption..
have u bought the lappie hp dv6226 ?
pj
@pawanjain19

I had talked to Fastrack computing and his address can be found from its website Branded Laptops in Chandigarh at Fastrack Computing. From where r u planning to buy and which dealer have u contacted and what price he has offered? I have PM u my gtalk id and yahoo id and will be available for chat @ 6.30 pm in the evening.

@ pawan jain

nope i havnt bought the hp dv 6226tx yet...It looks nice but the only thing bothering me is

1) I think 1Gb Ram is too much for day to day activities and too less to run the vista. Also
Ram can easily be upgraded later on...and its prices are definitely going to decrease with time.
2) Do i really need a nvidia go7400 ( im not much of a gamer )
3) It is not exactly cheap ..( 58,0000 ) and my budget is for around 50k.

But since I dont have any other really appealing config. for 50k i think ill have to extend my budget a bit....It will be either this or compaq V6218tu which is for around 51k (same config but with intel 950gm chipset + 512 mb ram)

And guys do tell which laptops uve finally decided to buy/have bought so that we can gain from the time u spent collecting gyan. Ive been thinking abt it for a month or so..and to be frank I dont wanna waste any more time..

I think you will save on Octroi if you collect it from New Bombay; thus, the lesser price.

Can any one confirm this?

I have called DELL to about a laptop....the person told me it will be advertised price in paper + 4% VAT

but at the same time, he suggested if i take delivery of laptop in Navi Mumbai I dont have to pay VAT....Can it be true?

I think he must have made some kind of mistake,....can anyone confirm it?

i talked to accord computers in sec 20.. he quoted me 59k.. the system has 1 GB RAM and 120 GB HDD.. please tell me wen i can chat with u.. i missed that day..

hi redemption..

i inquired the price of the usb tv tuner card separately .. it is available for as low as 1800 bucks.. so the price told by hp is not quite right ??:

have u bought is btw??

if yes then i have some questions.. tell me asap..

@amanonArun

Ya, it is. I am planning to buy it this month as a TV Tuner card with remote is free with it (Haupage make) till 31 st March 2007 worth Rs 6500/-.

Any idea abt HP's pavillion? Is someone trying that?

Hi pawan, the TV tuner card which HP is giving around 130 Dollars in the market (as I found out on web). Its with remote and the best make "Hauppage".

For folks willing to indulge a bit, the hp tx1000 is a nice laptop to have on the radar. It is a convertible tablet PC, the first to make use of the Vista's tablet PC features. Its a 12.1 inch laptop so its small and light. Its labelled as an entertainment PC by hp so it has the usual webcam, mic and mulitmedia buttons which are usually not seen on a business tablet PC.

HP is currently offering this only with AMD processors, but I am hoping that they will release the intel versions soon(they are probably waiting for the launch of intel's new santa rosa processors for laptops which will be known as the Centrino 2).

Its cheaper than other tablet PCs but definitely more expensive than regular laptops.

@redemption & amanonArun and targetmba

i am interested in the same lappie.. but i need it in may..
if the dealer is giving good discount on a bulk order right now then i may consider it buying it with u ..

Hello !

I wish to buy a lappy, and the most important things i am looking for are as follows :

1 ) Long battery backup : Atleast 5-6 hours

2 ) Lightweight, as much as possible.

Price is not really a constraint. small screen is fine. other features / parameters are not very important.

I am a complete ignoramus when its comes to laptops, so i have no clue whether this combination is possible or not. if yes, which brands / models do you suggest ? if possible, give links.

cheers,
Harshad

Any normal laptop wont have more than 3 hours of battery life on a NORMAL battery, however you can easily buy a larger capacity battery OR buy an add-on battery that is attached when your regular battery is almost depleted.....

If you need a lightweight lappy, you should either look at Dell XPS line or IBM Thinkpad X series ....

Basically any Business laptop with a 12" screen ....will have to compromise on performance but would be lightweight ....
