Buying A Laptop

anupam_khanna Says
wats the configuration of the compaq(5201) laptop u r reffering??

its celeron 1.6 with 256 mb ram , 40 gb hdd, combo, wifi etc...same spcs for
acer(3682 as 2413 thy say is outdated model) and toshiba(L30) too....all three are in same range-30k....only toshiba offers xp starters version , others comes with linux...bt toshiba is 4 cell battery while others are 6 cell - how vital is tht?

i also read tht this particular toshiba model screen isnt very clear from side view or angles...

@redemption - I suggested that you go for the 5200 core2duo. That should suffise. If later on you decide that you want more power, at that time you could buy the other one That is IFF. Also, the prices should drop, once intel comes up with some core3duo or whtever they are working on :)
2. Vid card - yeah you are right. That was a typo. Dedicated vid is for the additional card.
It does help if you do some hi end graphics stuff. Otherwise not recommended. But one thing I do know is that you can't go for an additional card later on if you have inbuilt.

@ jayantkaul - Dells are cheap, I have myself seen. Check this site out - Deals2buy: Everyday hot deals and coupons
It's US based, but it's a good electronics shopping website. I bought my HP for 1100$. Same config in Dell was 800 or lesser. What you may be talking abt could be the model. Dell makes 2 kinds of laptops, inspiron (for normal home consumer) and latidude (corporate business user)
The inspiron are not that inspiring really 😃 and they are cheap.
Latidudes are real amazing laptops, most big companies use these and give them to employees (I had one myself)
These are exhorbidantly priced)

Incase you got somebody overseas (US preferably) DELL is offering $200-300 discounts for Home or Small office users (Inspiron series). Plus zero shipping charges till May 3rd within US ofcourse. Check out their website, you can customize your notebook. With the exception of deals/discounts/bundle offers Dell prices and India and US are more or less same. Change your geography and compare the prices in India and US.
Btw who else thinks Vaios are grossly overpriced.

Cheers

I have a dell latitude D510. the thing is since im yusing it more as a desktop, it kinda over heats.. (not like shuts down or antyhing , temps of 60deg c) so using it on my lap becomes impossible.. I managed to get this software for dells called speedswitchxp and reduced the proccy to dynamic controlled and that has lowered themtemps a little..but its still more than comfortable warm. the area under the laptop, where the ram is kept becomes hot after some hours of downloading.

BTw i was on dell india and i coudnt find laptops with dedicated gfx cards. btw anyone in india using a macbook?

got acer 3682 for 27500....gr8 deal.am happy

I also agree, VAIOs are grossly overpriced. Not just that, but I also think that VAIOs will be overpriced even if they were at normal usual rates. I have at least 5-6 friends who rue the day that they bought a VAIO 😃

Hi I just spied this topic and reminded me of the problems I had to decide for my laptop and thought maybe I could add a few things to help you with your decision making :

So firstly, the specs of my laptop

Dell Inspiron E1505 (also known as the 6400)

  1. Intel Core2Duo T5500 1.66 GHz, 2 MB L2 cache, 667 MHz FSB
  1. 2 GB DDR2 RAM. 533 MHz
  1. 256 MB ATI Radeon Mobility X1400 Graphics Card
(128 MB dedicated+ 128 MB shared)
  1. 120 GB Hard disk 540 RPM
  1. 8X CD/DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW)
  1. Windows XP Media Centre Edition (with my free upgrade to Windows Vista Home Premium on its way)

Explaining various queries, I'll take em component wise,

Processor -
This is one of your most important decisions, since laptops are rarely upgradable for it.
The various options offered by Intel (I dont know anything about AMD's :))
are 1.66 GHz,1.83 Ghz and 2 GHz . Firstly remember these are 2 core processors so effective speed is a little less then double (like 1.66 GHz translates to roughly about 3 GHz).

I would recommend you to not look lower than the T5xxx series due to the fact that these processors are vastly superior and these would make your laptop future-ready.

That being said the 1.66 Ghz which I use has ample processing power for a normal user + occasional gamer and you can look for faster speeds according to your needs and money (like if you use photoshop or any video editing software or want to play the best games at high def then the 2 GHz or higher are for you)

RAM -
This part is a little easier since in most cases it is easy to upgrade it, though there might be high costs involved.
There are 2 popular variants of this 533 MHz and 667 MHz, again with minor differences in performance for an average user.

I recommend you take nothing less than 1 GB (though I took 2 GB since I got a sweet deal on it) because of one word : Vista. Vista minimum requirements are 1 GB ram (if you plan to use the aero interface and face it, why else would I want vista )

Graphics Card -
This is an odd category, since most people associate graphics card with video games and though that might have been the case earlier, it has now become imperitive to have a graphics card. Unless and until you are severely financially constrained , please go for a dedicated graphics card.
Again Vista(you b33ch) requires 256 MB graphics card, so decide accordingly.

Hard Disk -
This is another component that can be upgrade with ease, so this decision would be based on personal use. For example, I like to store everything on my HDD ( music, videos, movies etc) and thus even 120 GB isn't enough for me, and I find myself constantly writing DVD's. However on the other hand you might only use ,max 40 GB at any point of time.
Also this too has 2 variants, with 5400 RPM and 7200 RPM. As you might have figured, higher number in this case means faster access times and thus more money (thats how they get you :grab:)

I think 80 GB would be enough for an average user and you can increase your decision on your needs.

Optical Media -
This is an easier section.Nowadays most companies are offering a DVD burner so I guess your decision is made ? If they are not I'd still say get it, as again, you'll be future-ready (though nowadays a DVD burner is just present-ready).

OS -
Windows Vista would be what you are loking at, however if you need your laptop just for a year or 2, I suppose Windows XP would be fine too, but more than that Vista it would be.

That being said, companies nowadays are also offering free upgrade to Windows Vista when you buy a Windows XP machine now, though I'd recommend getting Windows Vista straight off as these companies are always trying to save some money and thus make that upgrade a little tough to find

Also Vista is being offered in many different variations and with the average user in mind Windows Vista Home would be best. Home Basic I feel is nothing more than Windows XP with a few security fixes (which will be opened again soon enough) and the name Vista slapped on it, so go for Home Premium ( Aero!! )

Now I was lucky enough to get my laptop from the US where prices are waaaaaaay cheaper , so this cost me about 51000-52000 (bought it online + found a online discount coupon which saved me about Rs.10000 ) so not really sure of what it'd cost you here.
However Processor + Graphics Card + RAM show you the real difference in your usability speeds so concentrate on those, out of which processor and graphics card are usually non-upgradable so decide carefully.

Plus looking at the extras, my laptop has a
5 in 1 memory card reader
4 USB 2.0 ports
inbuilt 10/100 Ethernet card
integrated bluetooth and wi-fi card (802.11 b/g)
VGA port and S-Video port.
The few things it lacks are an inbuilt Mic, which though isn't a dealbreaker would have been nice to have, neither does it have a inbuilt webcam - which I'm ok with . Both these can be easily attached and thus its ok if your doesnt have them.

I dont have any leakage or dead pixels but that too varies from laptop to laptop.

Also about the brands, I'd say that its about personal tastes so a Dell might be better,as good or worse than Hp, based on the buyers opinion of the brand.

Finally I think the decision does come down to personal needs + financial constraints + bias so in the end you'll have to make your own decision. If you have any furthur query I'll try to help if I can.

I got the same laptop with Windows Vista. Bought it in the US for $1032. Neat deal.

Also, I wanted to get my system with XP, but the Dell guys there said all the systems that are being shipped now will be with Vista loaded & that they are no longer giving XP with their systems.

In-built mic was a big issue for me coz I'm on Voice calls most of the time. I got an external mic (a small USB sized thing) for 10$..So guess its fine.

Another thing is that the Laptop gets hot rather quickly and is a problem if you are workign for more than 30 mins. When you see it though, it looks like it has lot of ventilation in the bottom, but when we keep it on our laps we close all that out & take the heat. Me thinks its an inherent problem with all the laptops (Probably ventilations need to be provided at the sides or on top near the keyboard).

This is more of a desktop replacement & not a travel companion as such. Good one on the whole.

Hi
I forgot a few things -
1. This laptop has pretty good battery life IF you use it at low brightness. If you're like me and dont like that settings I'd recommend getting a 9-cell or 12-cell instead of 6-cell battery
2. Also on the "hotness" 😁 issue, the problem is dual - ventilation as pointed out above AND the fan settings for this are odd - the fan only kicks in properly once the laptop becomes really hot. However this can be rectified by using a fan setting tool which allows you to tweak your fan settings.

Also I think that though this isn't your ideal travel companion its not that bad too (much better than the 17" desktop replacements 😃 ) though this is probably targeted at the "sometimes need to take my laptop on travels category". For us average MBAers I'd say its good enough since it has OK portability without compromising much on performance.

@dare2d

that post was pretty informative... I understand that Dell laptops can only be customized and are not pre-built, so is it possible for someone who goes to the us for a visit to get it from there at a short notice ?...Also are there any issues regarding the service in India ( does it have to be clarified or mentioned explicitly while buying from there ? ). Also the power supply system is different there ( wattage etc. ) so do the adapters work here also ?...and finally did you get accidental warranty coverage ?...and if thats true then how do these Dell guys safegaurd against those who break their lappys deliberately to get a new one ?

Can any one confirm this?

I have called DELL to about a laptop....the person told me it will be advertised price in paper + 4% VAT

but at the same time, he suggested if i take delivery of laptop in Navi Mumbai I dont have to pay VAT....Can it be true?

I think he must have made some kind of mistake,....can anyone confirm it?
