Buying A Laptop

hi..am new to this forum..but am fairly good at laptops. have done considerable RnD on that front. I have a HP DV6000. It is just great (and is the best selling laptop too, not the best one admittedly!) Great screen, performance etc and reasonably priced.
I would never recommend a Sony laptop. I vouch for Sony products, they are beyond amazing, but not in the laptop area. I have at least 5 friends who have bought a Sony vaio, and are regretting to teh extent that their laptops are gatherig dust. It only looks good apparently.

My take -> Buy HP.. good mix of everything. If budget constraint, get a Dell. If prestige aspect is imp, get a mac (but don't regret later on, coz u barely get stuff for this, and all are mostly the originals, hardly pirateed).
And last piece of advice, get a laptop from US if possible, ask anyone coming from there.
It's easily around 15k cheaper than in India.

Also check this website Notebook and Laptop Reviews
well maintained website with a wealth of info. I researched this site largely before deciding to buy my laptop. BTW, I got a core2duo, 1 gb ram, 120 gb HDD, 15.4' screen.

Hey, thanks for the info.

tell me something, does ur lap heat up. i have an old dell Close to 2 years, and recently i started torrenting and stuff on it *dtop died*.. andthe thing heats up (even when its on a table) after a couple of hours of donwloading...

and what about the batteyr life.. btw how much did ur lap cost u? and gfx card?

No, it does not heat up if it is on the lap, just a little bit warm. But if it is on a bed or some uneven surface it emanates palpable heat.
My vid card is the intel inbuilt 128 MB one. I bought it from circuit city in the US, and they had this on offer, and I liked it overall. I would have preferred the 256 MB dedicated vid card, but Cicit city did nto have any such model. anyway, this one is still amazing...

Battery life is not something to talk abt highly. it lasts mebbe around 2 hrs. It does come with a 12 cell battery (mine has the 6 cell one) that will double the battery life, but it adds to the weight and size also. the 12 cell one bulges out from the bottom.
costed me 1100 USD all inclusive. Same thing in India was like over 75,000 Rs.

You know the wierdest thing ever. i was on hp india yesterday and I couldnt locate any of the HP laptops.. all i saw were compaq buisiness laps without a dedicated gfx card..sigh.

Yes even i agree the point made here...HP seems to have a good mix of looks and performance. I even like Dell laptops but they are quite on a costlier side compared to HP.
One of my friend has HP dv6000t brought from US. I don't think so that we get this model here in India, i am not sure because there is no info on HP laptops on their website . But i just liked this model.

^^There sure is my friend..Its just that in India and some other countries (including Australia, Pakistan..), the dv6000 series is marketed as the dv6100 series.

I recently bought the HP Pavilion DV6137TX notebook right here in Delhi. Amazing VFM at Rs. 63.5K.

Found this website after browsing -
HP Pavilion dv6000 Notebook PC series

It has a complete range of HP Laptops. choose the ones that end with TX, those are the ones for India.
As far as I know, you cant get the HP laptop with gfx card of the shelf. Never saw that option at least in US. for the gfx card, you will have to get a custom built laptop.

Check the list for authorized dealsers in India in the same site. call them and enquire.

I guess Dell laptops are cheaper than HP. I hardly saw Dell laptop being more expen than a similarly configured HP one.

This product is available in India. After searching for sometime on HP India website, i found this link. Just check it out.

thanks for all that info...ive decided to go for a dell laptop ( core2duo 1 gb ram )..However i wanna know a few things

1) wats the diff. between core2duo T5200, T5500 and T7200 ( is the diff in speed worth the additional investment )
2) should i go for a dedicated graphics card..if yes then which one
3) can the hard drive be upgraded later on if i purchase only 80gb now..

4) ive heard that there is a backlight leaking problem in all dell models...is it true ?..
and also how do i know if the laptop wont overheat....

plz throw some light on these pts...and thanks a ton....

1. Not a huge difference in the performance, unless what you do demands such cpu intensive stuff. If normal usage with occasional load, buy the 5200, it will more than suffise. Get good amt of RAM. Also, later on, you can always buy the 7200 as sockets are same. hopefully 7200's proces will reduce
2. Dedicated vid card if normal usage. if u wanna play like the latest games or so some 3D modelling, then opt for the extra one. Otherwise not worth the money...also remem that extra vid card means more batterty usage. I doubt if u hav much choice in dedicated, it's all intel in built. If you were asking abt additional card, you got quite a few choices...I guess Nvidia is the ideal one. You have ati also, but I have not heard much abt ati,.
3. Yes HDD can be easily upgraded later on. You may not even need as these days you get these mobile HDDs real cheap and they are usb driven.

4. Not much ide abt Dell. Leakage prob - search on google and see if you can get info or if ppl have mentioned abt it. google will give all the data you will require. If someone else knows abt this, please let redemption know.
Laptop overheating...same thing, choose the model first and google it out. give relevant search words lik model+ problems etc. You are bound to get some info.

hiii i am going for a sub 30k notebook for my gf....i have been told abt Acer 2413(rs 28500) and compaq 5201(rs 30,500)...all inclusive with leather bag and 1 year warranty.

wats the configuration of the compaq laptop u r reffering??

If similarly configured, buy the compaq. It's a good brand backed by HP.
If the config differs slightly, then check the upgrade options. Maybe one of it can be upgraded later on. Off course, it depends on the usage. I have seen compaq machines usually have god upgrade options. but some amt of rsearch has to be done to confirm that in your case.
If compaq specs are low, then get the Acer. It's a well known brand as well. Wipro used to have a collab earlier on. Now Acer sells separately.

Dude

Zenith, in my experience, lacks quality in terms of hardware...dunno about the service side but then it is cheap n the most decent bargain u can make at tht price lvl.

Apple is no doubt the BEST in terms of build but thy r expensive. If u r price sensitive the best option is DELL as thy provide onsite service and r decent in terms of quality as well.

Also, never think in terms of upgrading a LAPtop. It'll cost u an arm n a leg...buy what u want n be done wid it. Dont go in for a addon grphic card as well coz thy dont offer a boost in performance relative to the increased cost factor.

is that really true ? i think the graphics card does offer a major boost to ur system performance but only if you are doing graphics intensive work like playing games or doing 3d animation.... however as far as performance is concerned i think a major bottle neck is the speed of the fsb ( 533mhz or 631 mhz). does anyone have any idea when santa rosa is gonna be out in india ?

thanks for replying...but i have some reservations...
1) r u suggesting that i upgrade my lappy's processor later on ?? :wow:
2)well the "dedicated" vid card is the one u put on as an additional card. It has its own RAM and does not utilise the system RAM. The ones which are inbuilt are the "integrated" graphics cards which utilise the system RAM .

4)I read abt the backlight leaking problem somewhere in notebookreview.com but it said that its nothing serious. However its always helpful to get an opinion from someone whos using DELL...

Dude with regard to dells, they over heat if u run them 24/7 while doing continuous downloading via wifi. I've had my dell for 2 years or so, ive dropped it a couple of times, and never has it acted up.. (my screen hinges are still tight). Only draw back with dells and ibms is that they look very standard/plain.

Btw i dont think dell's are cheaper than HPs. (if yu add in a dedicated vid card like a nivida 7400go or ati mobility x1600)
Having an additional graphics card is a major help if yu want to do image editing/vid editing or want to play games. The intel onboard gfx cards will suffice for nomal windows - word - surfing and a small amount of gaming work.
