Guyz Help me out!!!!
PLZ!!!
Guys, I've a question...
I think its more or less compulsary to buy a laptop in a B-School... My question is what if i buy it now? I'm in dire need of a laptop right now, and ofcourse cant afford to buy it again in the coming years... Do I need to buy it again in the BSchool, through their channels??
If not, then kindly guide me as to what config I should go for...
Reply plz... Guyz who alrdy possess a laptop!!! Sum gyan... :D
Not all BSchools "force" you to buy laptops thru the Instti. Mica does I think. IIMs/XL et al allow you to get either a laptop or desktop. If you decide thru the BSchool, you'll end up getting a good config system at discounted price. And regd the config, whats yer Budget ?
Dell is defn a great brand to consider. Get a quote on phone - this is their toll free number: 1600 33 8046 - ask for Jayakumar. I bought my DELL 3 years ago - very very sturdy and amazing support. I would not consider Toshiba. HP vs IBM can be considered.
Besides the config they have mentioned make sure they have 3 years ONSITE warranty. (Dell's OnSite next Business day). Boy... I am sounding like a Dell Sales Rep. ;)
cheersl

People, I'm a complete newbie... What config should I look for.. Whats the difference b/w Intel Centrino Technology, and regular Intel Pentium 4 M processors... Whats the cost difference? What about a regular P4 in a Laptop... That must be more affordable isn't it?
I dont need fancy AV's, backup s/w and OS etc... I need to cut down cost on that... Is it possible? Laptop running Linux etc... Only requirement is a decent config and good enough support... I was thinking abt Toshiba etc... Plz guide!!!

But apart from ur laptop, you'll also need to have the place having an 802.11(a, b or the newer g, i think only b,g standard compatibility is there for centrino) network i.e. the location has to provide support for your laptop, else, it'll be like buying a cellphone to use in an area where no network providers are present.![]()

Pentium 4 is hi power (computational as well as consumption of power thru battery
). So, if the laptop is plugged throughout its usage, then it's fine, else, there might be a drain on power. Again the Pentium4M Technology (mobile = M) uses significantly less power and hence, a good bet for your config.Look, if you want to do basic word processing/ppt shows, etc. even a celeron is fine, seriously. The key to good performance is a lot of RAM and not just processing power (a gimmick, coz processing power is in mflops, which is never mentioned on the processor's endorsement page, only clock speed in GHz is mentioned). Trust me, save on the processor (unless you need Wi-Fi connectivity) and buy RAM.
Cost depends on overall configuration and the brand. Advice: Ask some friend in the US to buy it for you and get it. It'll be significantly cheaper and you'll get a gr8 machine for the same cost.
Linux is a cost cutting option, but unless you're familiar with it, i wouldn't advise it.
If you're like me, gaming and hi-performance stuff, forget Linux (for the gaming part, coz Directx support is essential), go for XP. Also, the ideal config for a gaming crazy chap wud be Alienware laptops/desktops. These are the ones which the real pros (in comp. graphics industry) use. Also, BOXX provides great hi perf machines. Of course, these cost a bomb, but check them out, if you're interested.
Mostly, noone in India hears of Alienware or BOXX (check out the net/their sites, etc.) and other such stuff, so you'll have to get these thru a friend in the US (duty free for laptops, these days).

The word Centrino refers to the entire package that Intel bundles...the processor and the wi-fi connectivity. You were saying that putting a regular P4 would be more affordable or even a P4M.
Lemme put out the basics>>
PIV - Intel's 7th Gen processor which is tailored for desktops and has a very long pipeline coupled with a nice thirst for power. It has the ability to scale to really high speeds, upwards of 3.5Ghz. Meaning? You have a laptop with a PIV, you better have it plugged in to the power outlet most of the time and you better be wearing thick pants.
Conclusion? No. Do not opt for a PIV system because it'd be a serious power drain issue. It gives you bags of performance but is not the right platform.PIV-M - Intel's Mobile optimised PIV. What we essentially have here is a PIV with an ability to cut off some of its systems when the computer is not upto processor-intensive tasks, this way it saves on power. Along with this, the PIV-M is geared towards low-power and more often than not comprises on performance when compared to the regular PIV. Same ability as PIV to go to insane speeds in the range of 3Ghz. Meaning? You have a pretty good laptop, with decent power-saving skills and a decent performance and you don't need to wear thick pants. Conclusion? No. Why? Because there's something better down the line, just wait and watch.
Centrino a.k.a Pentium M - Intel's completely new Processor. Built from the groundup, the P-M codenamed Banias is one of the most revolutionary processors built by Intel. The P-M as a project started off loong ago with Intel's Isreali R&D; team, with a processor codenamed Timna. The project was abandoned due to a lot of commercial reasons, chiefly the inability of the Timna to scale to high speeds. But the Banias is a work of art, it not only consumes substantially lesser power than the PIV or any other processor in the market but it also comfortably outperforms PIV processors with much higher clock speeds. Get this, a 1.6Ghz P-M Centrino would outperform a 2.66Ghz Desktop PIV system at gaming! All this while having the ability to run for 6 hrs on one charge (IBM's T-series). Meaning? The Centrino is the platform for mobile computing. Conclusion? Yes. Intel named the P-M "Centrino" only to differentiate between the PIV-M, PIV series and also not to confuse the average Joe who'd end up walking into a store and see a PIV 3Ghz Laptop and a PM 1.7Ghz Laptop and be befuddled as to why Intel would sell PCs with such a high range of clockspeeds. Thats the reason behind the branding, which notwithstanding, the Pentium-M - Centrino - is the optimal and only choice you should go for in today's mobile scenario.
Sorry for the realllly long-winded post, it was just to clear up a lot of misnomers which people tend to associate with processors and clockspeeds. Considering the wide gamut of processors and clockspeeds available its only possible dat such a situation may crop up..
Go for the Centrino, it'll keep you happy. Tell me your budget and I'll choose a laptop for u..
btw, Toshiba is expensive...for all the stuff you DONT need...Acer or Dell would be my choice with IBM the perfect one though its waaaay too costly. Acer, for its sheer dealer network, is my number one choice.:)

Cleared my doubts.. So now Intel Centrino is the only option. Tell me, is wireless network really available in top B schools? afterall thts why im buying the laptop.. I mean WTH if i cant use it...

Guys...
After a lot of market survey i've been able to narrow down to two companies Dell and Samsung. Toshiba ruled out bcoz of prices. IBM not good, guess they'r focussed on server side solutions in the future. Compaq, well every1 against them...
HP again too costly...
Samsung offering a Centrino @ 69k with 3 years comprehensive warranty. (256 DDR 333, 40GB, DVD Combo and ATI 32MB)
Dell Inspiron 510m @ 56k with 1 yr comprehensive warranty. (Pentium M 1.6, 400MHz FSB, 256 DDR 333, 30GB HDD, DVD-Combo, Wireless LAN, 2.32 kg)Problem is that one has to shell in another 26k to upgrade warranty to 3 years...
Ditto with Inspiron 700m. Costing 69k! Ultralight (
I'd have gone for Dell if the warranty was 3 years... but its 1 year!!! What should I do??? I guess the 3 years warranty is very important, isn't it???

Hey ninja....
yes warranties are very important especially if u r gonna use ur lappy as a student
.....but then again if a lappy lasts one year w/o problems then it shud go on for two more years w/o further problems unless u r gonna spill coffee/tea on it or something else drastic happens....I have no clue of Samsung machines as i have not read any reviews on them.....Dell has got both a major fan following and an equally strong critics lobby.....the biggest factor against dell that i have read about is its sturdiness....its supposed to be one of the flimsiest in the market....
Also i hope when u have narrowed down your choices u actually went to the shop and a look and feel of these machines.....its very important that u do this coz u r gonna spend so much money.....
also cud u elaborate on the reasons why people r against compaq.....i havnt done a detailed survey on all their models but one which i specifically liked is the v2000 series....its got a good config, cool looks etc etc...and i think u can get it for ur budgeted price.......an HP equivalent which i liked better is the dv1000 series but alas this is not available in india yet.....so if u have got someone abroad, u cud ask them to get one and for u if u r interested....
On a gut feeling between Samsung and Dell, I might choose Samsung but lappies r not something u choose with gut feelings 😃 .........
Whatever u buy, let us know and ur reviews on it.
