Buying A Laptop

Hi ppl...

Even I am planning to get a laptop, rather than a desktop, primarily because of the fact that if I am purchasing a new comp at all, I would rather go for a laptop, than a desktop, and this is a long-term / one-time investment... and the difference won't be that huge !

I am choosing the COMPAQ PRESARIO R3003 model. The basic config for which is as follows :

(1) Intel Pentium 4 2.4 GHz Processor
(2) 512 MB RAM (2 slots of 256 each)
(3) 40 GB Hard Disk
(4) CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo Drive
(5) Windows XP Home Edition

These are the major parameters when it comes to comparing laptops, so have stated just these...

I am planning to have somebody get this from the US for me... It would cost me around Rs. 54,000, which i believe is a pretty good deal ! In India, the same thing would cost me around 77-80,000 for sure !

One more reason I am choosing COMPAQ over DELL (I was keeping only those 2 in mind) is that COMPAQ has a large no of service centres in India, as compared to DELL - which might have a role to play in the long run !

Pour in your inputs... is this a good enough deal ?

CAT_VET are you seriously thinking of purcahasing a LEGAL copy of MS OFFICE?

I will rather use openoffice if piracy is an issue.

Depends how much does it cost
I think much of our time in the B-school will be spent on Excel ..PPTs etc.. so wud be hard to do without MS-Office

I am not sure but it may cost anything between 20k-30k - afterall it's the flagship product of MS.

Anyway, free office suites like openoffice(basd on staroffice) are more or less compatible with MS Office ( I have been using them for the last 2 years) and in case of any specific issue you can use your college's copy of MS Office , or you can still go ahead and load it

I dunno think Presario R3003 wud be arnd 80 ... wud be perhaps arnd 70 ... am saying this coz i got a COMPAQ Presario2500 for 56k in inida ... tho the config is a bit down ... they are

(1) Celeron 2.6 GHz Processor
(2) 256 MB RAM
(3) 30 GB Hard Disk
(4) CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo Drive
(5) Windows XP Home Edition

and other routine thigz like inbuilt modem ... lancard etc.

What do think about this specification(Compaq)

Compaq presario P2518
Mobile Intel Pentium 4 @ 2.4GHz / 512 KB Integrated L2 Cache / 256MB DDR SDRAM / 30 GB HDD / 8X DVD / 1.44 FDD / 15" TFT XGA Color / ATI Radeon 4X AGP / Upto 64MB DDR SMA / Li-Ion Battery, Touch pad / 56K Modem / NIC Combo / S-Video TV Out / IEEE 1394 / IrDA Port / 3 USB 2.0 Ports / TouchPad / MS Works 7.0, MS Money 2003, Norton AV 2003, Win DVD, Win XP Home

Available for arround 67-68K

Only problem seems that it does not have a wireless chipset.

Will inquire further about that.

guys, yesterday i went to check some laptops. the guy gave two options Mobile Pentium 4 or Centrino. I am not keen on Celeron as I am not happy with its perf. on desktop

now, what's the adv/dis adv of Mobile Pentium 4 and Centrino? which one should I choose.

secondly, how good reliable are HP(read compaq) laptops - like dropping, spilling coffee etc!!

Guess dropping, spilling coffee wont cause any serious damage to HP laptops, or for that matter any brand. But I doubt if the processor will work or not. ;-)
Think no one's tested the HP laptops by dropping et al. So pls try and lemme know

From whatever little knowledge I have about laptops..I heard centrino heats less as compared to Mobile P4 when used in wi-fi....

Waise India mein kitni jagah wi-fi hai yaar...unless of course u'r buying your own router to be mobile ....

Centrino is not a processor ... it is actually a set of requirements that must be followed. Anyway it ensures that ur laptop is lighter, more battery life and less heat. Mobile Pentium 4 is being phased out ...... so i feel Centrino is going to be the best choice.

Had another query regaRDING LAPTOP SPECS!!
How much is the performance difference when it comes to a P4 and a CELERON???

Cos i did my research on lappies and the ce;eron ones are way cheeeeper than the P4 ones!

I have bought a Dell D600 Latitude from the US through my cousin.

Is there any converted I'd have to buy so as to take into account the different power supply systems in both countries?

Some one please tell me something....last thing I need is the entire laptop blowing up on my face

Check the specifications on the power adaptor. Laptops come with power adaptors which work from 110-240V and 50-60Hz. Check your adaptor. I am not sure about the adaptor that comes along with this Dell laptop.

guys reeading the above discussion..i made a decison and bought
IBM R-51 Thinkpad with Centrino technology..
it is damm sexy..
we made a college block deal and got it at 60,000...where the marjket price of it is close to i think 78k....
go ahead with the offer if u get across one..
sivaram

i too second IBM R-51 .we too got it at 60k at 3 yrs warranty and i suppose NMIMS got it too.once u join ur college go in for a bulk deal.though later i was told they can be pressurised into 55k around, thts their corporate price.
btw does scmhrd has wi-fi..if ur college doesent have it their is no point investing in it.

I don't think anything changes b/w US and here. Some of us here bought Dell latitude 505 Wi-Fi... the imported ones... and its working top notch without any addition/modification... check it out.

Hi fellas....

I have been doing some laptop research recently myself anticipating admissions to a b-school.

Though the Sony VAIOs are cool they are expensive and I have heard that Dells are an absolute no no. IBMs are supposed to be sturdy with the best keyboards amongst all laptops, I am not impressed by the features they offer(although it is good enough for a B-school student).

The Laptop that has impressed me the most(which costs reasonable) is the HP dv1000 series and the Compaq v2000 comes in a close second(actually this is a sister laptop to the dv1000). You can check out the features for the dv1000 here. And you can also check out the user reviews and comparisons with the Compaq v2000 in this AnandTech thread.

The catch is that the dv1000 is not available in India(although the Compaq v2000 is available) and I have been trying to think of many ways of how to import one for myself. Any ideas anybody? also does anybody know what are the import duty cost??

Also if we have any users of the dv1000, your reviews are welcome. The admissions to b-schools havent started yet, so I am hoping that HP introduces this model in India by around May(though this looks remote).

I would also like to know if anybody thinks a rival brand for a laptop of similar config is better.

TIA
-Barricuda

Guys, I've a question...

I think its more or less compulsary to buy a laptop in a B-School... My question is what if i buy it now? I'm in dire need of a laptop right now, and ofcourse cant afford to buy it again in the coming years... Do I need to buy it again in the BSchool, through their channels??

If not, then kindly guide me as to what config I should go for...

Reply plz... Guyz who alrdy possess a laptop!!! Sum gyan... 😁
