Shaw,
Use the Notebooks drop down menu, and click on Inspiron 6400. It will show you 2 models. The one with the EValue code above has the Radeon.

Any specific suggestions?
I guess its better to find out later coz there will be many more advanced products by then. what say.

sorry to trouble u folks again........but i need advise frm experts again

the problem
buying a laptop frm Singapore/USA(which one is better).....in the range of 40 K Rupees. but my relatives r not tech savvy///// as far as go they can just get the model number i tell them......I .need to decide on the company (DELL/hp/lenovo/ACER or ny other that u people suggest) as well as on the config.......

my req.......
not much gaming
but heavy internet use...office work ,,,,, projects, ppts etc ...
me a great music fan too...
no programming .........basically i need it for my bschool.....and may be for some years after that

as for the tech details that i know
min 512 mb ram(upgradable)
40 gb+ hardisk(upgradable)
dvd/cd writer/reader
2mb cache
also me not too clear on the processor....whats the diff b/w intel centrino,,,,pentium M, and core duo....which should i take
what bout battery life and the heating problem.......there will be only a fan under which i would have to work with the laptop in my hostel room of IIML
what do u suggest
(also tell what other tech details i should luk out for)

also how gud is the after sales service in india for a lappy frm abroad.......

and how do i find out which laptop is available in US/Singapore and at what rates....because what there websites show is the rates including some shippin or online buying etc...and r my relatives in foreign also supposed to buy the lappy i suggest online or frm retailers........

another thing....people keep telling me that getting a lappy frm abroad is a gamble....u get more for less at the risk that if nything goes wrong,,,,u have lost the gamble........what to do bout this?

so if someone can help this confused soul please do..

well i figured out the processor atleast,,,i guess i would not go for dual core
but is Intel Core Solo processor T1300 (2MB Cache/1.66GHz/667MHz FSB) same as pentium M(with centrino) or is it something else

Some gyan that I received from more tech-savy friends :)

1. Core Duo processor makes a lot of difference. Some applications like photoshop and others are almost twice as fast as on pentium M. Heating is not a problem because the CPU runs in power saving mode most of the time and it's throttled only during heavy usage.

2. 17" is bulky and heavy. It shouldn't be called portable. However, if you are looking for a DTR (Desktop Replacement) then the increased screen real estate is useful. The bigger size is also a problem because your notebook doesn't fit into the usual carrybags.

3. Some people prefer the regular matte screen instead of BrightView/TruLife/whatever screen which is extra crisp and brighter because of the problem with reflection. If there's a light source behind your back or if you are working in broad daylight, the reflection gets annoying. However, there seems to be quite a polar debate about this (same case when people get their passport photographs ). The matte screen is definitely not as lively, and bright as the new ones. Photo/movie viewing experience is much better on the brightview screens. (Personally, I would like a matte :-))

4. The onboard video card is good enough for general work. Gamers would like to go for a dedicated ATI/NVIDIA card but that brings more power consumption/battery life issues. Plus, that's expensive. NVidia is better if you plan to run linux on the machine. ;-)

5. It's MUCH MUCH better if the FSB speed and the RAM speeds are same. For example, if the FSB is 667 MHz, performance would be much higher in case of RAM on the same speed, rather than having a memory running on 533 MHz.

6. The pre-installed OS (atleast on Dells) comes with a lot of bloatware. It's a good idea to order the separe genuine OS cd, rather than the default recovery CD. After the reformat and reinstallation, performance improves dramatically.

7. Notebook review forum is really useful

Did you buy it from dell india ?? Upgrading the memory to 1GB makes it 53,464 Rs.. isn't it ?? Am I missing something ?

We should take a look at the insprion 6400. A configured version with dual Core CPU 1.66 GhZ, 512 MB ram, winXp Professional, 15" display and 80 GB HDD costs about 54000. We should be able to negotiate to atleast 52k. See the url

for more details.

Bye,
