Buying A Laptop

HP Pavillian 1615 Deal

May you consider this!
company or processor.....

well i need a low cost laptop arnd 40K........one prob.....what should i opt for ....... better company with a celeron processor(eg lenovo)
or companies like ACER,compaq with centrino processor..........
as i guess the rates would be comparable.
as for my need ...i need the laptop for IIML work and surfing the net.....no programming ........no games ..... films(may be sometimes).........
so what do the experts suggest.......

My option wud be to go for a lesser known company with a good config.
I guess Acer has few nice configs at around the price u r looking for - if i remember correctly, their 3000Series had some nice configs. The only flip side, again speaking from my memory, was that they had the Pentium 4 processors which suck up power lick thirsty dinosaurs. so u'd have to carry around extra batteries i guess :(

But really - if u know anyone coming back from Us, try one of the deals at DELL. My friend was able to get a good config Inspiron 6400 (Dual core blah blah blah) for US$1050. So u shud be able to get a nice single core thing for something in the range of US$800 or US$900. If u dont know anyone in Us, try the local shops here - even the branded ones. Who knows, u might get to see a branded one with decent config at around the price tag u've mentioned.

regarding the service and warranty .. can someone please make this more clear ..If I get the PC from outside, Dell will give absolutly no service in India or what ?

hey FnV,
The US$70 costing warranty coverage says "At-Home service" - by which i understand that if u ring them up, they'd come to ur house to do the service. This, i dont think will be done in India. Purely my perception - if someone's got first hand ifno - great!!! By default, they have an international warranty - meaning which u can drop into their service centers and get the piece corrected. How charges apply - i have no damn clue :(

BTW - as i had mentioned, these are purely my perceptions. Dint dig much. If things are against ur perception - better u or ur friend clarify.

any idea of a model which has :-

1) a 15 inch screen
2) a pentium M proc
3) 1 gb ram
4) a graphics card ( nvidia / ati radeon) ????

There's a new model at Dell India site. (CoolKunal sent me the details, pasting it here)

N540504 - Dell Inspiron(TM) 640M Intel(R) Core(TM) Duo Processor T2300 Notebook
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Intel(R) Core(TM) Duo Processor T2300 (1.66 GHz, 2MB Cache, 667 MHz FSB)
Genuine Windows(R) XP Home Edition (English)
Intel(R) Media Accelerator 950 Graphics
14.1" WXGATFT Display
1024MB (1 X 1024MB) 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM
80GB SATA Hard Drive
Internal 8X DVD+/-RW Combination Drive with dual layer write capabilities
Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945 Dual Band 802.11a/g 54Mbps Wireless Mini Card
6-cell 53Whr Lithium Ion Primary Battery
Integrated Sound Blaster Audigy ADVANCED HD Audio
Dell(TM) Wireless 350 Bluetooth Module
65W AC Adapter
Deluxe Light Weight Nylon Case

I think this model clearly rivals the 5118tx that we were discussing earlier. The only differences that I see are:

(i) Lower Graphics Card
(ii) 80 GB Hard Disk instead of a 100GB one

As for the Graphics Card, not sure how many are hell bent upon getting the nvidia GEforce, coz most of us would not get time in a b-skool to play games. And if we do want to lpay games, we could always use the institute labs for it I guess. Also, since there's a DVD-writer, the 20GB reduction in Hard Disk space won't make a huge difference as such.

The price shown (before tax) is 55,519/-.

How many of you might be interested ? 😃

Hey Mav,

I am definitely in for this one mate(Seems very similar to HP1615, a bit better if I may add, vis-a-vis the RAM and suits my budget as well!) My only concern is, what is the kind of Time Frame that we are looking at?

Sun

great going guys... just make sure that you talk to lenovo/dell/hp directly and don't get forwarded to one of the dealers.. dealers cannot give you much discount!!

Hi Anil,

I have seen the 640M deal on Dell site and tried the customizations.

Once you add the customisations making it similar to HP 5118. i.e 1GB Ram and DVD writer, the price comes closer to 60K and I also added WINXP Professional, getting a approx price of 60K.

I like this deal and was thinking of considering it if nothing materialized on PG, because compared to HP 5118 we will get WINXP Pro and weight will be less in same price range. Only thing missing out will be graphics card but that is not so important.

If you are thinking of talking with DELL count me in.

My option wud be to go for a lesser known company with a good config.

Checked it up with the Dell fellas at Bangalore.

Apart from the trouble shooting thru Phone, Dell has tieups with Wipro and Unisys (Dont rmr this name) where in they'll come to your place the next Business day and fix it then and there itself. This is what the Dell guy told me. Can anyone re-confirm ?

Anyways, I was having this question in mind: How many of us are ready to sacrifice the Graphics Card? By that, I mean to ask that ow many of us would settle for a Lower Graphics Card like Intel Graphics Accelerator 950 or something like that. As far as I understand, only hardcore gamers would require a real high-end card like the nvidia geforce. And these 'hardcore gamers' would be anywhere between 15-20 in that list of 89 people recd earlier (this is purely my assumption). And anyways, we never know as to how much time you can find at b-skool for gaming everyday.

See the problem with compromising on a graphics card is that, even if u are not a hardcore gamer, within a couple of years the system wont play any of the new games on the market. U wont be able to even try out new versions of ur favourite games.
The intel graphics accelerator starts panting even while playing current games like NFS most wanted.
Imagine the scenario....super slow frame rate....images getting stuck... very very frustating...take it from me... I am a big time NFS fan and havent been able to play any of the new versions on my old desktop !

PS : from what i have heard , gaming is a regular mode of timepass at any of the bskools !!

@mav 1.5k discount? they must be kidding us :p
how do these instis manage sooo much discount?

Hi Mav,
I am Madhukar joining IIML . I am based at delhi. Yesterday evening I was just scanning through the Nehru place(the computer hub market of delhi) for laptop and i just reffered to one of the dealers about a bulk purchase which was possible given a discount is offered, the dealer was quite excited and was ready to give a 10-12% discount on laptops falling above the price range of 60 K for a no of laptops in the range of 20-25.
I was a bit confused at this after reading all the stuff on the HP deal on this forum. Although i am not pretty sure and was not very serious on the discussion with the dealer I gave him my number and today afternoon he called up.
I will be updating you on this by tonight as I plan to meet him this evening. If something promising turns out I will direct him to you for further negotiations.

Cheers
Madhukar

Acer Travelmate 4150 sounds good!!!
I've attached the spec sheet. Sells for around 43K i guess. not sure.
1640 and 4060 are some other options.

Acer is the only guy i've seen to sell Lappies with Linux 😃 That saves a lot of money.

As for Compaq - Compaq Presario V2381TU (EM849PC) seems to be good. I guess it lacks a few stuff Acer 4150- has. compare the 2. You shud check the Compaq and Compaq and Acer sites for further info.

Between these 2 - i cant pick any. I think i'd go with Acer. Since they are pretty new (compared to Compaq) u'd probably end up getting a good deal :)

Is it something to go with the fact that an insti is a safer place to invest - with the prospect that they will have the around the same number of orders from the insti year after year. And the insti wont look outside one provider if he pleases them.

We are speaking of 100 max here when an order from and insti is way more than that
