Buying A Laptop

1. What is WXGA? Is it the same as Widescreen (WS)? What is the Difference btw WS and FS? ( I mean, apart from the screen resolution) What is the advantage of WS over FS?

I saw a Widescreen laptop in lenovo showroom yesterday. The resolution is (1280x800) so the screen ratio is not 3:4 as in noremal monitors. The screen was pretty bright and colors were good. The extra width be very useful in some of the applications and I believe this will be as good as a 17" screen.

Not sure whether it would be okay with Quake/Unreal and other games. I guess that shouldn't be a problem. 😃

WXGA defines a class of XGA displays with a width resolution sufficient to create an aspect ratio of 16:9. Resolution is defined as the number of individual dots that a display uses to create an image. These dots are called pixels. A WXGA display has 1366 to 1280 horizontal pixels and 768 to 720 vertical pixels, respectively, that are used to compose the image delivered by the projector.

A coupla questions:

1) Battery backup .. How much of it is good enuf? Both Lenovo and HP5118 some with a 6 cell battery. Does that mean both will give the same backup hours?
Is a six cell enuf for normal B school use?
Can we add extra battery later on?

2) Weight .. HP5118, I heard is about 3.5 Kg. Is that right? Hope that will not be much of a problem.. Can anyone comment?

So .. is that supposd to be too heavy ? Well, we are not going to carry it with us daily .. So I think it shud not be much of a problem .. What do you think ?
If anybody is planning to have a lappy from US, then he can consider these options too..

Inspiron E1505 looks extremely enticing at 799$ only.. :wow: :wow: :wow:

i.e. only for about 36000 Rs. :wow: :wow:

Please note that all prices quoted on US sites are EXCLUSIVE of tax and shipping. In some cases, this can be pretty high. So, try entering a ZIP code of some US state and find out the TOTAL (all inclusive) price. After the relaxation of import duty on laptops, there isn't a VERY SUBSTANTIAL difference in US/Indian prices (esp. for Toshiba and mayb even Dell)
2. Is Vaio a better option than HP 5118? (ie, in case I get from the USA.)

.

Definitely is In all aspects

BUT, the price difference is HUGE !!! So, in the end it boils down to your preference and budget.

With the config that u guys are planning, I'm pretty sure that it will be around 3.5 kg. And don't forget to add the adapter and bag's wt to it

HP bags are not that compact/light. Go for TARGUS bags if u want a light one !!

Well.. most of the lappys r around 3 kg mark.. barring the extra light ones.. So in my view.. 3kg or 3.5 kg.. its not gonna make much diff.. but u'll have to carry the laptop around.. 😞 😞

I saw Sony's website , VAIO costs almost 1300-1500$ exc. of taxes. HP 5118 looks good as of now. Both of the same config, yet HP looks on the cheaper side.

Can you get any link as to where I can compare laptop prices in US?

They have a wide variety of em. The lightest (no frills) ones can be around 1k also. So, it depends on the kinda bag u wanna buy. Samsonite are the most expensive !!!

To all the Lappy gurus here, I have some doubts:-

1. What is WXGA? Is it the same as Widescreen (WS)? What is the Difference btw WS and FS? ( I mean, apart from the screen resolution) What is the advantage of WS over FS?

2. Is Vaio a better option than HP 5118? (ie, in case I get from the USA.)

3. What is Pentium M? I know it's Pentium Mobile..but is it different from the Centrino technology?

4. In the HP 5118, I saw Intel dual core proccy, is it really dual core or one of it is a virtual?

5. We seem to talk 1gb RAM, 256mb gfx card and dual core and stuffs, but I have seen configs with just 256mb RAM and no gfx card. Yet some ppl who have those lappies are happy with the performance.

Can anyone answer point no.1 ?
