Buying A Laptop

Lenovo 3000N 100

Intel Core Duo
T2300, 1.66 GHz
Intel 945
512 MB DDR2
80 GB SATA
DVD+CDRW
14.1 Wide TFT
Up to 4Hrs Battery Backup
Modem, LAN, USB
WIN XP Home
2.7 Kg
Wireless LAN
4 in 1 card Reader
Bluetooth, Firewire
Finger Print Reader
Camera
1 year Global Warranty
Touchpad
DVD-Writer & 15.4 " Wide Screen (Optional)
Including the above option, (bigger screen and writer)
this thing costs
63000 (with taxes) with any distributor
69000 (with taxes) in the Lenovo exclusive showroon.

What do you guys think about this deal?
Is there any use in giving 6000 bucks extra and buy it from the showroom. I am getting the same thing, with international warranty and bill etc with the distributor.
The prices are as enquired by me in Mumbai. Will it be cheaper in Delhi? or any other place?

can we customize and add a Nvidia G Force 4 ?

If anybody is planning to have a lappy from US, then he can consider these options too..

Inspiron E1505 looks extremely enticing at 799$ only.. :wow: :wow: :wow:

i.e. only for about 36000 Rs. :wow: :wow:

As far as I know, you can customize nothing in this .. atleast not as a part of the deal .. Maybe later you can add the card by buying it separately or something like that (not sure)

The only customizable part is that by going for the 14 inch screen and minus the DVD writer, you can save up on 4000 bucks .. But I wud defintly want to go for the writer ..

Lenovo has an in built Web cam .. (Looks vry cool . a small hole at the top of the monitor is the cam)
A finger print reader (You dont need to log into the PC.. Just swipe your finger and it will allow you access)
The data recovery option .. You can recover all the data for any date as it takes backup automatically ..
Many softwares loaded ..

Do the others have similar features ?

P.S: I am not trying to prove that Lenovo is better. Even I am confused regarding which one to go for.. So just trying to find out stuff ..

Think most of the discussions on this thread are about Laptops for BSchool use. I dont think you need a finger print reader and all that.

And ya .. one more doubt ..
HP has the NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400 which I think Lenovo does not ..
How much does this help?
I am not much of a gaming freak .. but I suppose it is used for that .. right ??

Yeah !! But if we think that way .. then perhaps the lower end config .. which costs 40K will also be good enuf ..

Usually when we go for a desktop or laptop .. we prefer to go for the latest one .. Isnt it ?

Finger print reader ki koi zaroorat nahi hai .. lekin it looks very cool . style maarne ke kaam ayega

Arrey bhai, agar style maarna hai then go for the Vaio! And even the Dell ones dont look bad! 😁

Viao .. this config .. will be too damn costly !!
Apun ko style maarna hai .. lekin wo bhi apne budget me ..

Anyway .. can anyone throw some light on the GeForce card ..

I was told that its always better if we have Windows Xp Professional coz for networking, thats better. Few of the seniors at B schools have adviced me to go for Professional compared to Home version.

How true is that ? Wud taking XP home/professional make a diff to we B schoolers ????

PS: Posted the same on the HP thread as well......

Vinz, I'm no expert on this topic but what I've gathered till now is that using XP home gives problems when you try to connect two laptops through a LAN card. It can be done though but you need to login in safe mode and change some settings..basically, it's a bit troublesome. You wont be facing any problem while connecting to the lan or the internet. And in case the campus is wifi enabled you shouldnt face much problems at all since if you need to share data between 2 laptops you can easily upload/download from the LAN itself.
Also, XP Pro has extra security features...you can set access level for different users...which i dont think will be of much use to us

Ah yes good you reminded me! I wanted to ask Maverick about this since I had read somewhere that installing a pirated OS nulls the warranty on your lappy.

And how does the company guy know about it ? Whether its original or pirated I meant.

And taking it further, if that is the case, what if I go ahead and install linux on it ?? That's not piracy, right ??

that shud not be a problem.. if its a freeware, like linux u can definitely install it.. else it will be like u cant install any software apart from those provided by HP !

even for the pirated XP.. what will the HP service guy know if its original or pirated. installing software shud not have any effect on the warranty.. but its better to check with the dealer

well the geforce card will render better graphics as well as there will be lesser load on the processor as all the graphics related operations will be handeled by the card.. its always better to have a seperate graphics card but if u dont game, then the inbuilt intel graphics accelerator shud suffice..

To all the Lappy gurus here, I have some doubts:-

1. What is WXGA? Is it the same as Widescreen (WS)? What is the Difference btw WS and FS? ( I mean, apart from the screen resolution) What is the advantage of WS over FS?

2. Is Vaio a better option than HP 5118? (ie, in case I get from the USA.)

3. What is Pentium M? I know it's Pentium Mobile..but is it different from the Centrino technology?

4. In the HP 5118, I saw Intel dual core proccy, is it really dual core or one of it is a virtual?

5. We seem to talk 1gb RAM, 256mb gfx card and dual core and stuffs, but I have seen configs with just 256mb RAM and no gfx card. Yet some ppl who have those lappies are happy with the performance.
