Some laptop queries: Didnt want to start a new thread; So this thread shd accommodate this :)

I have a Gateway Solo 5350 laptop imported from the US. Its more than 2 years old and needs a new battery. Are there any reputed dealers who stock laptop batteries for this laptop. I am guessing a standard battery may even do. Are batteries "one size fits all" type or does each model of every brand require proprietary batteries like mobile phones do ?

I also face another problem. Due to prolonged use, the screen doesnt stand stiff. In fact at angles of less/more than 90 degrees the screen falls forward/backward which makes working with it pretty difficult and necessitates a flat surface and care so that the screen is perpendicular to the base. It wont sit on my lap anymore :)

Is this a strange problem or a common occurrence ? Again I dont find any visible bolts to tighten. So can somebody recommend something ?
The laptop is still pretty hip/loaded and I cant throw it away 😃

Guyz! First ask yourself! What are you going to use the laptop for?! An MBA programme requires the laptop for no more than Windows XP, MS Office and a good antivirus. That's all you'll ever really need! Is it worth spending 85000 on a laptop to do that?! Think!

Hi DNX,

Have you asked the same question to NMIMS, where you have been selected and it is compulsory to have a laptop..???

Do you believe it is only Windows XP and MS-Office ...!! Well if you are planning to take Marketing.. I would tell you there are loads of Mkting s/w which are used for studies..!!

Just fewones searched in Google:

http://www.decisionanalyst.com/download.asp
http://www.researchinfo.com/docs/software/index.cfm

These are only the free ones.. there are loads of registered ones which generally the instts provide to students..

Also Excel is used extensilvely by any top-notch consultant..!! Believe me.. there are so many features that even after so many months of using it.. I have not been able to learn many of them...! There are few businesses which run only on Excel..!!

Excel/Word and Powerpoint is not what Aptech/NIIT etc teach in their basic courses.!! There is so much additional in it..!! And management runs so much on Powerpoint and Excel.. !!!

My few cents... I am sorry if you beg to differ.

no...i agree with u sameer (sameer gupta)...excel is actually quite an app!..add visual basic programming to it and u can run whole companies on just excel!...i do know vb programming with excel n the two together make for some real computing... also thanks for clearing up the matter about marketing s/w...had no clue about that...none at all...so i guess toshiba would be a good buy...but i am still looking for a

Hi DNX,

Well I am not looking for that amount and I have already told SPJIMR for the laptop. They are providing me the Toshiba in 71K. I know I could have got it in a little lesser but then the service that they are providing me are good. So I went for it.

Also I did a little research and found it to be a better deal. Anyways.. I am happy about it even after reading the prices in which ppl are planning to buy laptops.. (on this thread)..

You can go about the Wipro's Little Genius. Heard that is much cheaper and they have come up with real good schemes...

hi ppl!!

need your opinions about choosing between IBM Thinkpad R40e and Acer TM 244 FL-P28A. i'm getting these two at comparable prices, but since i don't know too much about laptops, i need your inputs. the specs are:

IBM Thinkpad R40e

Mobile Intel Pentium 4 Processor 2.2 GHz
Microsoft Windows XP Home
256 MB DDR RAM
30 GB , 4200 RPM
DVD-ROM
10/100 Ethernet
6 cell Li-Ion battery
35.8 cm (14.1 inches) XGA TFT LCD monitor
3 yr limited warranty
IBM Rapid Restore, IBM System Migration Assistant, PC Doctor, Lotus SmartSuite

ACER TM FL-P28A

Intel Pentium 4 - 2.8 GHz
Linux OS --> Not a problem, i'll put in my pirated Win XP :p
256 MB DDR RAM
30 GB HDD
DVD CDRW Combo drive
Intel 852GME Chipset
FDD
56K Fax Modem & LAN
4 USB Ports
Infrared port
38.1 cm (15 inches) TFT LCD monitor
1 year (incl batteries) warranty

so basically i have to choose between IBM brand & battery backup vs larger screen/faster processor and cd writer combo. what do you guys suggest?? i'm joining XLRI, so service centers in jamshedpur will be a factor.

much obliged

paddy

forgot to mention:

1. ACER has two service centers in Jamshedpur itself, IBM has only one in Bangalore

2. i need info unrgently guys, have to buy a laptop this weekend!!

Hey dude!
Am going for the R40 one.Its got better upgradability features and also a 3 year international warranty.I know it might cost you a wee bit more but go for an IBM you wont regret. If you buying it from B'lore do make sure to chek out Laptop World on Double Road and IBM office at Ulsoor.Dont have their exact addresses but hope this helps. 😃

i'll be buying it from delhi! still undecided though. wouldnt it be better to take the one XLRI is giving for 60k. its a centrino based 1.4 GHz laptop with 30 GB HDD 256 MB RAM, DVD combo drive. don't know the brand or model number though

Well XLRI is still in negotiation with HP India... also I have come to know that the OS is Linux and not Windows...

o crap! i better stick with the ibm then. at least it has a licenced XP with it. and im sure if we change the linux os in the laptop xl gives we'll be screwing with the warranty. the only detterent is that IBM service center is in banglaore, donno if its feasible to go from jampot to b'lore..but then thinkpads dont breakdown too often.

btw, is centrino REALLY required. as far as i know wireless lan is still a distant reality in indian univs.

Well you can download "Licensed" Windows XP for free!! 😉
