@wippybaba : I'd called up Dell and checked. The funda with most int'l warranties is that it's applicable only if the same model number with the same internal components is sold and serviced out here.

For eg.: An HP 5000 bought in the US has the same config as the HP5118 but the warranty is not valid here as the model numbers are different.

Also, after speaking to an hp employee, he told me that most int'l warranties do not really work and are there just to entice customers to buy the laptop. 😃

i have mailed the requirements to hp people .....just waiting for there resoponse .

i have also pm to pagalguy ....

but one thind friends , why dont we also ask hp people to give us 9 cell battery instaed of 6 cell ....it would then make the best lappy in its class..

also we dont need windows xp home edition .

also why dont we have a poll for people who want to go for hp 5118 model..
meanwhile my 4-5 friends have also agreed for hp 5118

if we get around 50 people .....we could gfet the best bargain .

I think we should start grouping together - i.e. Mumbai group. So that just in case a complete PagalGuy deal does not materialize, people from mumbai interested in getting HP 5118 can approach a dealer from mumbai. Just throwing your support individually in the forum will not make things easier but rather if we start working as a group, we may be able to show some seriousness and speedup the process.

without any argument hp dv5118 is the best laptop available in india presently. but my budget is 55k. i had almost decided to buy hp dv1000 . but if u ppl manage this bulk deal for 55k-57k count me in . its a steal at this price .

Hi Sachin.. Currently I am based at Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu). So, I won't be able to pitch into the group effort physically. My profile say 'coimbatore >> Mumbai' coz i'll be joining iit-bombay (but that's gonna be only in july).

I'd say.. let's just wait for the pagalguy thing and see.. if it doesn't work out, then we'll give it a shot individually through a dealer. I contacted a dealer here, and told him that i can buy 10 pcs. For that, he quoted a price of 64k nett. (not worth the effort) But if we hunt, we could probably find out someone better.

i agree with you kamal... 9-cells would be a better option. extended battery life close to 50% would make it a really cool lappie. just one doubt for the gurus on this thread. does a 9-cell battery mean more weight? my guess is that it would weigh more... but by how much, i donno.. can someone throw more light on this (i.e. approx how much would the weight increase due to the 9-cell battery)

and ya, about that xp thingie, we had a discussion on this thread (about a pge or two back). if the hp guys can tone down the price, then most of us would be ready to settly for DOS (leave alone windows)... Anyways, even after getting the pre-installed xp home edition, my guess is that at least a few of us would still go ahead with the xp professional installation (that we already have). so, as far as software goes, try to negotiate the price by cutting out most/all of it. just my 2 cents. others can pitch in their views on this, since it's gonna be a group deal.

The good news is that we already have 25 ppl who have polled that they are comfortable with the price being close to 55K (hae included those in the ranges of 50,000 and above). So, I think 50 ppl won't be an issue if we can bargain for anything less than 55k.

i know u r a hardcore DELL fan, but if they r available for a 40% discount, then nothing like it.. even the 5118 will not be able to match up to it..

i've been readin this thread and i thought i should let u know my 2p... as far as getting the lappie without the software... it will be next to impossible...

firstly, the reason they bundle the software alongwith the laptop is to prevent piracy... and thus its part of a business procedure, they're not gonna let down on that... for all that i know they might even have an agreement with microsoft on that...

secondly, like someone on the thread mentioned, this whole software on cd thing is not how it works, the HDD comes preinstalled and only a backup cd's given, not the original cds... so, in my opinion i dont think its viable thinking that they'd skip the procedure for us.

earlier i also contacted dell people , but they are offering a discount of rs,4000 only .

Let us know if you got a quote for 50 lappies and wat it is... Since I have approved the loan, i might need a seperate copy of a quotation since that would only help me get the disbursement.

I am game for anything that is below 55k and I guess that shouldn't be so difficult given the tough negotiators to defend the interest of students

Boys, negotiate hard and start it with a below 50k range and that would help u land anywhr betn 53-54k.

i know the raphics card sucks but otherwise i think a pretty decent config for the price. so ppl pour in ur views.

Thats a Irony - you are coming to Mumbai in july and I am going to Chennai - Tamilnadu in July - IITM. Anyways the price you negotiated is not all that bad because after taxes the non-negotiated price would come to 67k. I am not sure we will be able to breach 55k barrier for HP5118, but even if it comes close to 60K that will be a saving of 7k.

Guys looking for sub 50k good lappy should check out Dell 630m. This is the model number they are using in India for XPS 140m released in US.

I am able to put together Dell 630m with similar configuration as HP 5118 for 59K except for the Graphics card.

So I can contact them and get you the info. But before that, how many are really interested in the deal. Going thru some of the posts, some say they are okay with 53K, some for less than 57K and all that. Guess we need to approach to a round figure sorta thing. And also I dont think I can edit the poll to facilitate the same. So any pointers what can be done ?
