all softwares including windows....comes preinstalled in hp 5118.-probably directly frm the company.....they dont give any kind of cds with it.....all softwares and windows are genuine.....to save piracy(probably) wht they have done is......there is an option in my lappy "create recovery disk" ...it can be created only once though....dunno if i can copy those disks....those disks are all in one...it wud have all softwares mentioned along with windows original n everything...but in a single setup...... the recovery disk cud be created using either 11 empty cds or 2 empty dvds or one dual layer dvd....
and yeah battery till now is givin me 3 hrs (without full time songs and videos...thou 5-10 mins---yes)or more ....dependin upon my usage.....speed is excellent (u obviously know tht)

i will definitely do as u said.........in the mean while i got another suggestion from one of my relatives asking if i wanted a laptop from Singapore if it costs less.......any idea how much a 50K lappy(which i think is decent price for a gud configuration in india) would cost from there( because if i can get it for arnd 35k then i think that would be better) .........for this i would need to tell them the models and other details etc....which i am not sure of......also the relatives r goin to be back in 2 weeks so this decision has to be taken asap,,,,,,,,,,also i dont think there would be any duty at airport for a lappy from singapore.............and dunno if they would provide me a bill or not........as in that case i may get it reimbursed from the Bank from which i take a loan...............

thats gr8 news for u.. yes laptops r very cheap in singapore.. u can definitely get laptops for abt 30% cheaper.. more if u know the right place to get it from..what you can do it go thru the websites of these companies or visit some showrooms and decide 3-4 models which u like and tell them to ur relative in the order of preference.. they can then get whichever is available.. and yes 1 laptop per person if free so no duty will be charged :)
abt the bank rembuirsment, u will deifinitley get a bill when u buy the lappy. but i am not sure if ur bank will reimburse a foreign purchase. i am bad at loan matters and u better check with the bank..
so u better get started with ur research :)

apart from the Norton Antivirus and Norton Internet Security 2006 (60 days live updates), i don't think the rest of the software is all that useful as such. Acrobat Reader is in fact a free software.
so, even if they give it with only DOS installed, it should be pretty much ok. windows to baad mein apan log khud hi install kar lenge.
when it comes to choosing between all these softwares and saving 2-3k (at least), we shouldn't have a doubt... it's not all that difficult a choice... even if a person is not comfortable in installing stuff himself, he can easily find people around the city to install all required software for anything like 500-1000 bucks...

hey... the software comes preinstalled.. so i don't think we can get the laptop without the softwares... for HP, removing the software will be an extra step that they'll have to do coz the hard disks would've been prepared separately before the laptop assembly..

it wud be a tough call.. both the brands are damm good and offer good products. though i feel toshiba is on the higher side it can be preferred over dell coz they r sleeker and look better (atleast to my eyes
)lenovo n poor quality ! u must be kiddin me. they are probably the most rugged laptops available. dealers can tell u acer is the best product in the market if their commission is highest on acer.. they jus try and sell the product which gives them maxium profit..!

a celeron wud suffice u for a b-school purpose and office after that. but u must consider two factors..
firstly, most b-schools have a minium requirement specified for lappys and they r usually centrinos.. jus check with ur b-school befor ebuying one..
secondly, i dont think the difference between a centrino n a celeron is 10-12 k if u r looking at the same speed processors.. besides with a celeron u will have to fit an additional wi-fi card.. so it doesnt work out that cheap and is worth to go in for a centrino..

This is Anupam and I am using a Dell 610 latitude since the past year. My two cents on the topic:
Ideal Laptop config:
Intel Centrino 740 Processor (true 1.71GHz, not the 735 updated chip)
512MB Ram (DDR2-400mhz), 60GB plus HDD (5400 RPM), 14.1" screen, b/g wifi built in, 6 or 8 cell batter, DVD/CDRW combo, win XP Pro, 3 year warrany (comprehensive if possible).
Additional features: Blue tooth, Card Reader, Built in mic etc. Std software is usually crap so dont feel happy if u get any extra software.
Now my rating of companies:
1.) Toshiba (best screen possible, ultra wide viewing angle, expensive) , Lenovo (rock solid build)
2.) Sony (stylish n sexy, but expensive) , Dell (Value for money, screen is not that gr
3.) HP (Good deal possible even on single machine), Acer (Big Value for money)
4.) there is none ...
Recommendation on Imported lappy: Dont until the price differenc is extreme ... my friend got a sexy lappy, but the graphic card got fried, no warranty in India, and the damn card thing costed 28k here, luckily his mom was going back so she got it repaired. Another guys screen went kaput, so he baught a LCD monitor ... so dont ...
Important: Your B-School will be getting bulk deals for you, check them before u buy afrom any other source, as bulk deals means u get better n more responsive warranty and cheaper price also. I suggest that u first have a look at your schools deal, research the other avenues availabel, get comparative feedback and then buy...

we dont have a definite no as yet coz not many ppl know abt the thing we are planning apart from the regular visitors to the thread. if u r tryin to talk to HP say abt 40-50. i think we can get that many or more if the deal is good

it all depends on how much we are able to negotiate yaar.. like say, if the best that hp can offer is something above 58k, then i'd rather wait for sometime and get it thru an employee later coz it won't make much of a difference.
but yeah, if it's anything like 53-54k, then i think we should be able to gather 40-50 people at least, as funkypratik said)
