@kamal mittal: dude how r ur negotiations with HP going? is there any positive feedback?
well me torn b/w buying a lappy or a desktop issues me goin to join IIML this year.......... financial constraints.........therefore thinking of cheapest option compu gud config in arnd 20K lappys ( no idea) but guessing very bad configuration in 30K (this would be the minimum cost i guess and only Compaq in this range me thinks)
compu - upgradable lappy - not upgradable
compu - no use after 2 years of MBA lappy - could be used later only if doesnt get outdated as it already would have poor configuration
my needs- not multimedia or games.....just college work.....and extensive internet usage.......and may be some songs if i get time.....
also me tried using lappy once........dont think they r as comfortable to use as PCs
so now what do the experts say?? nymore pros and cons that i need to consider and i need advise toooo so please help
another thing that i noticed while reading the thread was the 5k buks for Windows .......and people suggesting go for Linux and use it with some difficulty..........cant we ourselves install windows and MS office with our own cds just as we do in PCs

i am not sure if u can do with a desktop at iim L. 1st thing u need to do is call up L and ask them if laptops are compulsary.. if its not, u might as well take a desktop.
even laptops are upgradable, but the cost is jus too high to even think abt it :) after an MBA i dont think a basic laptops of today will be of much use. it will get outdated but u can still use it for internet surfing et al.. same goes for ur desktop. and anyways when u join a company after ur MBA u wil be getting a comp/lappy from ru company !
as far as comfort goes, u do find laptops cumbersome in the beginning but then u get used to it..
the 5k for lwindows it there coz all the company selling laptops have to provide a windows genuine CD.. if u get a desktop assembled u can install windows on ur own..

hey kamal.. i got an idea from the above post.. while negotiating with hp, ask them if they can cut out the Windows OS and cut down on price (say by another 2-3k at least).. Genuine windows ke bina bhi kaam aaraam se chal jaata hai yaar... they can supply us with some free OS like linux (haven't seen them supplying this in any of their models), or DOS (donno if this is free OS though).
still, give it a shot while negotiating. who knows? we might get lucky.
i just visited the hp5118 page again... it states:
Pre-installed software - MS Works 8.0, Acrobat Reader 6.0, Microsoft Money, HP QuickPlay Direct Software, Quickplay for Windows Version 2.0, Muvee Autoproducer, Sonic Digital Media Plus 7.0, HP Games, HP Photosmart Premier, Norton Antivirus and Norton Internet Security 2006 (60 days live updates)
So, if we go in for DOS, then they might not install all this software. It's not that I require any of these, but then we do need to keep in mind that these may not be supplied. And everyone who would be getting the lappy thru this deal should also be aware of it.

see at bschool u'll have to go for 2 months summers.... plus u'll be coming home in the breaks between terms.... plus u might be doing paper presentations or taking part in events at other bskool events.... and this is where the huge advantage of a lappy comes in... u can lug it around wherever u go...

i am sure they will be providing us with cds of all the software that they install.. so we can install them once we load windows :)
let someone speak to HP and then matters will become clear.. dude kamal r u listening
how good is Dell?? I mean when compared to lenovo and any other laptop for bschool use?? pls comment
DELL is among the best brands u can buy..maverick will vouch for that. lenovo is built to last and is rugged.. and more than the brand it depends on the model u r looking at.. i wud say all DELL, lenovo, HP, Toshiba are in the same league..
My budget would be below 50 man.. thats y I am not going for HP5118. I was even thinking abt may be compaq V2623TS which costs below 40 and then add an extra 256 mb ram to it. what say?

i wud say dont go for compaq.. lot of my frnds have had trouble. DELL is way better. btw, if u r not in a hurry and can stretch ur budget to a 55k i suggest u wait for a few weeks. we are trying to see if a PG bulk deal with HP is possible which might bring prices to 55k.. its an mind blowing deal at that price.. but it might take a few weeks, might not happen..the choice is urs
goin to IIMA but don't think that any such funda of a deal exists over there.. afaik vendors come to campus and have a demo the first few days based on which you can buy your desktop/laptop..

thanx Pratik, i will definitely do as u said.........in the mean while i got another suggestion from one of my relatives asking if i wanted a laptop from Singapore if it costs less.......any idea how much a 50K lappy(which i think is decent price for a gud configuration in india) would cost from there( because if i can get it for arnd 35k then i think that would be better) .........for this i would need to tell them the models and other details etc....which i am not sure of......also the relatives r goin to be back in 2 weeks so this decision has to be taken asap,,,,,,,,,,also i dont think there would be any duty at airport for a lappy from singapore.............and dunno if they would provide me a bill or not........as in that case i may get it reimbursed from the Bank from which i take a loan............... me goin crazy with all this things ..........dunno what to do...............
