Well, first me aint a gamer (at least not the online ones!) - taking a closer look at the cons.... 512 RAM (me thinks is pretty good enough for my b-school requirements - movies, music, surfing and some ctrl-c/ctrl-v presentations) 80GB HDD space - it has a double layered dvd writer, so i can write all the backup i want and hell, 80GB is huge! 14" screen - actually thats the USP for me, really sleek looks and portability
Also, those using the dual core - wats the take on the comparison with existing centrino's and the heat factor?
like i said, if u r not a gamer, the config u mentioned is damm good especially for the price u pay.. again HDD space is a very relative factor. i currently have 200GB and often have to clear stuff to make room for new ones..
and again, if u r getting a 65k laptop for abt 50k thru the bulk deals at ur coll, no harm with it... is there ?
Found someone in my office to get me a lappie from the US! My budget would be INR 50K (give or take a few K's) - any suggestions from the Junta!
US.. cool man. the best option is to search the net for best deals. u get the best deals online there. but make sure u have an international warranty on the lappy u buy.. try this site..

hey funkypratik... do they actually give such HUGE DISCOUNTS for college deals???... If yes, then I might just wait until I get into college, and then get the 5118.. (basically, what i am asking is that is it possible to get the 5118 for 50k from college)
what i know is that the companies downgrade on a lot of stuff (like slower RAM) to decrease the cost of the system.. these things are not very visible to a majority of the people in the college (who just see the laptop as a tool of convenience to perform their day-to-day work).

well that discount thing was posted on the forum earlier and i picked it up from there.. but yes, the discounts r quiet huge.. its is possible to get the 5118 for abt 50k if we get enough ppl to buy it..
as for the downgrading the stuff.. i dont think the companies will do that.. if they agree to a particular specification they will provide it. its possible that while negotiating with the coll for a price they might tone down the config..
ram speed n all can be checked from the bios settings.. so that can be easily brought to notice..
won't u do a system check before buying a lappy....and each college has a GOOD infra dept, who will assist you do that, even if you don't know how to do it....don't worry abt that mate..
the only reason they reduce the prices so much is because of the BULK order...check out IBM, HP websites, there are special sections relating to bulk deals....

yeah the config is good.. but then what price r u paying for it.. u might be getting a similar config for cheaper price..
the intel graphics is good enough if u do not game.. it will suffice for all other purpose..
i plan to get it from the states... so i'd be paying about 55k or something... and i game A LOT... counter strike and warcraft... but doubt i will game in the B schools... specially on laptops.. its sick to game on laptops!! so do u think there is a better deal around!? and do ppl need a laptop in IIM's ??

well u do need laptops in IIMs.. infact i think its compulsary there.. gettting the abouve one for 55k (60k for the card ) from the us is not viable.. besides the x1300 is not that good.. and had only 128 mb..
check out HP5118.. excellent config.. graphics card et al for 65k in india.. if u get thru a HP employee 58k !
hmmm... well the exact price of that comp in usa is 52000 including tax and delivery... and i have decided not to go for a graphics card after consultation with a few people. not gonna game .... yeah i did check out the HP 5118 tx machine.. it looks good as well... aaah damn it.. i think its better to go for the HP machine through a HP person just for the warranty... but i wanted a processor more than 1.66 ghz man... dunno why ! anwyays thanks i'll cya around
p.s. - i heard that IIMB gives desktops to all its students?? do we need laptops there also?
i did not buy that laptop.. a friend of mine did.. well, he is damm happy with the performance.. battery life is abt 2.15 hrs to 3 hrs depending on ur usage.. absolute value for every buck u pay..
yes, if u buy thru a HP employee u get abt 8k off on the employee scheme :)
Hey how about alienware. I know we have to get it form US. But how about its product support in India. Would that be an issue? Which one do you suggest the Qosimo F25-AV205 or a Alienware Area-51 m5500 taking into consideration the performance and the kind of service we get in here. The price of both are nearly the same. so i wouldnt mind getting either provided the rest all factors suffice.
Basic config is 1.73Ghz/915 Chipset/533 FSB 80GB HDD and 512 MB RAM rest of the stuff is the same 15.4"/802.11b/g and of course the typical sony looks (getting a black chassis and 6.3lbs) Final price incl. tax and shipping 1039$=47K INR
Now lets hope my 'courier' in the US doesnt change his mind!

that a good deal man.. i too was looking for a VAIO but thought they were too expensive.. the above config looks good.. throw in a graphics card and an additional 512 ram shud set me back by a further 8-10k.. not bad for 57k..
hope i find someone to get it for me from the US..

There are models with GeForce NVIDIA and others with 1GB of RAM - search well and u will come across tons of models to suit ur requirments. In fact the model i had seen in india was FS48GP (same config as mine), the only extra feature was the GeForce. In sure you can get something within 1200$.
Also, there was a sale at CompUSA on 7,8th of April where they were giving away my model (FS920) for 899$!!!! Imagine i missed that 😞 ANyways will live with this one!
VAIO i recommend.. am i sounding like a marketing manager for VAIO
the compaq laptop for that price is definitely not worth it.. ok u have less wt but the screen size too is small and the config very average for 72k.. if u want lighter notebooks and dont mind the small screen u can also look at toshiba..
cheers
And anyone wanting a VAIO should try and get it from USA/Singapore. The price in India is too much for the config they are offering. I would suggest the S series and T series for the super rich

Have not checked the quotes on VAIO in singapore but for Dell/HP singapore was more expensive than India also! Also, Sony offers international service for 49$ but in Asia it covers only Japan 😞
