that will cost u another 5k odd.. might as well go for the HP 5118.. if u r not a stickelr for DELL
Hey Guys,
Check out HP nx6125....
Good value for money, i suppose.
Seeking the opinion of PG nerds.

PS: RAM - not an issue as I don't play games....
And I can make do with 40 GB.

believe me shrikanth.. 40Gigs will not suffice.. u might feel u can do with it now.. but once u land up at the school, u will feel horrible short of space. i had 80 gigs on my desktop and when buying felt is wud be more than i wud ever need.. now i hav 200 gigs and still cribbing for space HP nx6125....

go for atleast 60 gigs even if u dont game..
even i have worked on both....but i dunt agree with your observation...I observed a similar heat problem in both companies' laptops.

Could you specify what models of dell and HP laptop have you used to arrive at this conclusion?

hey,

I was talking about Dell Latitude600...Heat emission is too high!
HP model I do not remember....It was with my last employer

Cheers

well, another reason is that if i buy online, i have to pay an extra 3k octroi to get it delivered to my place.. otherwise i need to travel or find someone who's travelling to get me the laptop from outside mumbai..

all in all, too much hassle for not too much benefit.. looks like i'm game for the hp 5118.. saw the laptop yesterday and loved it..

the only thing holding me back now is a bulk deal in college.. does ne1 know if iim's offer bulk deals, and if so, can u get discounts on any laptop that you buy?

Don't know abt IIMs but our XL got IBM r52 for 50500 last year! 😃

i am sure iims wud be offering bulk deals too.. almost all b-schools do. but i dont think u can buy any model in the bulk deal. its usually one model which is negotiated for and everyone buys that.. u can check with the individual iims for details..

The sad part is, these bulk deals mainly conc on cost-cutting measures. They wont mind going for a 333 Mhz RAM if it saves the students a coupla grands. And the worst part is, those lappies are non-customizable. For someone who's planning to throw away after the MBA, the bulk deal is perfect!

Thankx for enlightening Maverik. I was also holding back my purchase to explore more about the bulk deals.??: .. Now I guess its better to bargain from my local vendor as I hope I can squeeze our a decent discount from him as well.
Another pt. of consideration is how much are the prices supposed to fall is I delay my purchase till the end of June ???
if u wanna buy a laptop i dun think that Dell is such a good choice..(hey!!! i work there)..u may go in for HP or something...reason being that Dell only has entry level notebooks available in India..the Inspiron is for home users and latitude is for business users...but me thinks they are very high priced in India..u may wanna wait till the manufacturing facility sets up here but that's gonna be a long time ..mebbe by the end of this year...and the specs are not too impressive either until u wanna shell out >70, 000....

Now, question..y i dun have a Dell laptop..simple..cos they are more expensive for employees and are available only through finance..which includes EMI and other charges too..so it turns out that when u compare the prices, the systems are much cheaper on the website for consumers!!! LOL

spot on!!!

and more often that not the offer is on ibm(now lenovo).

IMHO, there are two things against dell.
1. heat factor: you use it for just a few hours and the temp. becomes a problem.
2. service: many of my friends have had a problem with customer service post delivery. this is the one thing which dell has not been dealing with...tho i must add that when you buy notebooks in bulk, like some corporates do, the service is quite good...but as far as individuals are concerned, the service downright sucks!!

I am thinking of getting Lenovo R52(2887MQ6)...the main specs are as follows:

60 GB hard disk
512 mb ddr sd ram
1.86 Ghz Centrino M
Intel 855 chipset
DVD writer
wireless 802.11 a/b/g...etc..

its available for 55k..all in all a good deal...and lenovo is very very robust...suits the indian conditions very well!!:d

I have also seen compaq's 2620TS..the config is good..its also quite cheap...only 49k..but the keypad looks awful(i know thats lame..but seriously it is)...

have also used a sony vaio...my dad's..man..it looks great!!...plus its unbelievably light...but way too expensive..

i think that the HPZV6000 is pretty good.. its a bit more expensive.. at around 63,000 but the features are more than decent!
compaq, 3.2 GhZ, 60 gb, 512 ram...
probably put in another 2 k and upgrade to 1 gb ram... so thats 65,000
60 gb should suffice... precessor seems good.. AMD 64 bit is good...
DVD writer... i game quite a bit so a minimum of 128 mb graphics card...they didnt specify which card in ebay though...
ok now 2 quick quesitons!
1) i heard IIMB and alll provide computers.. do we have to buy a laptop irrespective of that? for any B school ? ( read IIm's and XLRI )
2) does it make sense to get a laptop from USA or something with international warranty ?
thanks !!

International Warranty on Dell is offered only on the Latitude range. For the Inspirons you have to pay close to $100 to avail the same. Yeah I too have my doubts about Dell post-sales service. But I am kinda optimistic that the Lappie would work out fine.

One more doubt, when buying a laptop from anyone, how is it possible to add an excellent sound card, like the creative sound blaster or some other 5.1 stuff ? Will the blokes do that ?

And about the HP 5118, Can we pre-install a 2 GB ram before purchasing ?

while speaking to my frnd in HP i had asked him abt the customization. he said it can be done. so addind an additional 1GB ram shud not be a prob provided u r willing to part with the moolah but y in the world do u need 2 GB ram..??

i wud rather buy a creative 5.1 speaker system over the sound card..

and here i was thinking u were anti-HP...

hehe sir ji, are you going for MBA or joining NASA?

Hehe fellas, that was just an example I am not really keen on shelling out another 7k for the 2 GB ram 😁 And yeah, I not anti-HP, but more Pro-Dell 😃 Might just get the Inspirion 6400, for my plans to get 1 from the US have flopped :(

Funkyboy,
If I get a 5.1 speaker system, shdnt it be compatible with the on-board sound card ? 😐
