Buying A Laptop

you can modify the configs of most of them to include 1GB ram. Just increase the price, and recalculate the ratings and scores.

And FINALLY!! i found ONE METAL HEAD!!!

Thats a good analysis dude. Have only taken a cursory look at it though. But I couldnt find any of the 1GB RAM models there...will go through it in detail after a while

Hi msadani,

i think you should go in for the laptop if u r not a hardcore gamer. in case you are not taking up the offer, let me knwo and i'll think of getting that laptop instead.
There isnt much of a difference mate. Apart from the 6.5k that is.
I'm just curious to know, why do so many people prefer the Dell over the HP? Even Maverick seems to be a big fan of the Dell Inspiron

dell seems to have a better brand reputaion in india. but i dont agree on the exclusivity aspect as someone mentioned. most corporates have bulk deals with DELL so dell is also pretty common.. my bro got a dell from his company n i dont like the performance at all. takes ages to start up even with a 1.66 Ghz processor n 512 mb ram..
I got an update from a friend of a friend who works in HP. The model I was looking for is the DV5118TX...getting a price of 58.5k through him (exclusive of taxes). The site listed price is 64,990 (exclusive of taxes). He emailed the page to me...it clearly says Savings = Rs 6,490/-.
Guys, those of you who posted about 56K inclusive of taxes can you please reconfirm?

hey,

my frnd at HP told me that it will be available at 56k.. he did not send me any confirmation page though. i will ask him to re-confirm n ll post here as soon as i get any info..

And FINALLY!! i found ONE METAL HEAD!!!

Dude, where have you been all this while? you should have checked out the rock music thread...would have found a few metal heads there 😃

lol.. well said 😃

hi,

Using dell Laptop since an year, the silver grey model..
All I can say is, that if you are thinkin of getting Dell, do check for the heat emissions and Touchpad performance.....It goes down sometimes..
Heat dissipation is too much!

I wud suggest HP any given day..Having worked upon both of those, I can see a huge difference..HP wins hands down!

Also those in for IBM thankpad...Please do consider its over the top heat emission n consequently small battery life.....It is just TOO HOT TO HANDLE..

Cheers

even i have worked on both....but i dunt agree with your observation...I observed a similar heat problem in both companies' laptops.

Could you specify what models of dell and HP laptop have you used to arrive at this conclusion?

I was busy eating up all the CATz, XATz and the BATs...no sorry..that was Ozzy.....

Rock Thread ..here i come!

VAIO i recommend.. am i sounding like a marketing manager for VAIO

the compaq laptop for that price is definitely not worth it.. ok u have less wt but the screen size too is small and the config very average for 72k.. if u want lighter notebooks and dont mind the small screen u can also look at toshiba..

cheers

Hey Guys,
Check out HP nx6125....
Good value for money, i suppose.
Seeking the opinion of PG nerds.

PS: RAM - not an issue as I don't play games....
And I can make do with 40 GB.

I'm not an expert on this topic by any means but I feel that 512mb RAM is a bare minimum regardless of whether you play games or not. Laptops generally run slower than desktops with the same config and you might find that 256mb ram slows down your system quite a bit when you have more than one app running.
Also, for around 15k more, you can get a config with 1gb ram, 100 gb HDD, and a DVD writer too....think about it

Decent config, but nowhere as attractive as HP5118. The only feature worth mentioning is a 64 bit processor which maybe very useful in future and I guess ram shouldn't be a prob. 512MB is decent enough for XP and the upgradation to 1 GB shouldn't cost you more than Rs. 2K/-.But as far as HDD is concerned, you should rethink as they fill much faster than ur expectations. Esp. in a B-School (With LAN and its inherent benefits)

At 72k its a horrible system. Except for the 2 gig proc, rest all are lousy.
If you are really concerned about weight, check out the Dell 710m. The "Ultra Mobile Warrior" or something.
