Okay did some surfing around for info on these 2 graphic cards.
ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 Hypermemory (given with Dell Inspiron 6400) : This basically has on board 128MB memory and can siphon off an optional 128MB from the RAM on your comp.
The NVIDIA GeForce Go7400 with 256MB Turbocache: This has on board 128MB memory and can siphon off an additional 256MB from your RAM.
can som1 tell me dat wat is
1 media reader
2 integrated smart card reader
can som1 tell me dat wat is

the media reader will read the SD card / Memory Stick (normally found in digicams). so, even if you don't have the cable for the digicam, you can just remove the media, plug it into your lappy and dump it's contents there.
a smart card (as far as i know) is normally used in offices, for recording employee in-out time. it is also used at petrol bunks in place of cash (the petrocard by bpcl is a smart card). but i don't know what use is there for it in a laptop.
Found this on Dell Website
Basic System Install (Qty 1 System)
Can anyone tell me what this means ? Can we tell them.. "I'll install Windows myself, Just send me the CD" ?
can we tell them "i'll don't want any OS. I'll install it myself. And I don't even need you to give me the CD for it. "
that should bring down the cost of the laptop by about 2.5 - 3K or so...
i mean, seriously, they should have a option of 'linux' as one of the operating systems. this way, they'd be able to bring prices down and sell more systems.. what do you think?

Which machine (model) Maverick ?
Hi Guys,
Going to SPJCM dubai-singapore this june. I already have a toshiba satellite A-15 notebook (Celeron 2.0 GHz, Microsoft Xp edition, 40 GB HDD, 256 K RAM, 14'' monitor). The SPJ site says they require the following minimum config:
Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Professional Office Tools Microsoft Office XP or 2003 Processor Centrino Memory 512 MB (minimum) Hard Disk 40 GB Optical Drive DVD-CD RW Combo Drive Screen Size 14 TFT (minimum) Wireless Card 802.11g compliant (please note 802.11 a and b would not suffice)
Two problem areas are RAM (currently my laptop has 256K RAM)and Wireless card (No wireless module at present) . I believe both these things can be added to the system (I hope 802.11g can be added to A-15 series).
Now my question is that after adding the wireless card, would it still be considerably inferior to Centrino technology. Would the current laptop serve the purpose after add-ons or do i need to buy a new laptop? I can get these add-ons within 5K bucks easily else i'll hv to shell out additional 50K for a centrino lappy. Is heating up that serious a problem in non-centrino lappies. Something else that Centrino provides, that I would miss out with the upgradations. Please help.
Mohit
i think adding the wireless card and the ram wud suffice coz centrino is essentially a pentium processor bundled with the wireless card.. but then urs is a celeron. if it is within the spped limit i think shud not be a prob. but its best to confirm with the SPj ppl
cheers
ExpandingHorizon SaysJust checked out the HP Pavilion dv5118TX specs. The config sounds too good to be true for 64K! I'm off to check up on the site if that price is right. Plus I think HP has a discount scheme for it's employees, so if you get that lappie through a HP friend then it might be even cheaper.
oh yes.. buying it through a friends at HP will definitely be cheaper. a frnd of mine working at HP jus got that model for himself..(he got into ISB) he got it for 56k all inclusive.. thats a cool 8k off and the 4% tax too !
guess what guyz...........this is my first post frm my hp dv5118
cheers prerit
hey prerit,
congrats for ur new lappy.. do keep us posted on the batter life aspect. will be an important consideration when buying one.. also abt the heating issue which seems to be plaguing the dual core processors

More expensive for the employees? In what way? Can you please explain?
I got an update from a friend of a friend who works in HP. The model I was looking for is the DV5118TX...getting a price of 58.5k through him (exclusive of taxes). The site listed price is 64,990 (exclusive of taxes). He emailed the page to me...it clearly says Savings = Rs 6,490/-.
Guys, those of you who posted about 56K inclusive of taxes can you please reconfirm?

how does this model stack up against the dell inspiron 6400...Any ideas?
Edited to add after reading previous posts: Apart from the graphic cards, how do the two fare against each other...I'd rather go for a dell than an HP so want to believe that Dell is better

I'd like to ask the guys familiar with HP if they give the os cd's along with the notebook, in amrika you don't get the os cd's but HP does give a set of recovery disks, which you use incase of something going (terribly) wrong. That means you can't do a plain repair-reinstall/dirty install or even format/reinstall your OS (and that sucks). You just put the recovery cd's one by one and it gets ur system to back as it was when you purchased it.Are they doing the same in India ?
Actually in the us even dell doesn't give the os cd's, just copies the disk onto your HD, and incase you want the disk you pay about $100 extra, in India dell does give the OS cd, or so i've heard (someone can verify that). Also incase you buy a system with xp home and then install win xp pro (even the licensed version) on your own, it has ramifications on your warranty, the extent of which i do not know but if i'm buying a 60k notebook i would not want to mess around with the warranty.
Pleasure,
Naviin.

There isnt much of a difference mate. Apart from the 6.5k that is.
I'm just curious to know, why do so many people prefer the Dell over the HP? Even Maverick seems to be a big fan of the Dell Inspiron
Hi Mave,
I checked out that deal on Dell India website after msadani posted them on the thread. The config he had mentioned was indeed there. It was at this link:
http://dellstore.sg.dell.com/public/default.jsp?c=in&s;=bsd&l;=en&prd;_id=38382
The base system was a T2300 based system, and for the T2400, Dell website was actually reducing close to 4500 bucks from the quoted price (i.e. if during customisation, you chose T2400 instead of the default T2300, then the price would REDUCE by about Rs. 4500)
I think this was a mistake by the DELL guys, and now they have removed the customisation options for the processor.
Hey msadani, if you do come across some other deals like this one, then do let us know thru this forum.
wow... i called up DELL n they're offering me the 6400 as i mentioned earlier at the same price!!! (where the price actually reduced b 5k by upgrading it to T2400.. d only drawback with this config is no separate graphics card.. what say?? should I pick it up???)
Dell Inspiron 6400
-Intel(R) Core(TM) Duo Processor T2400

If you plan on playing high end games I dont think it would be wise to go in for that Intel Media Accelerator card. Havent seen a single review on the net which hasnt trashed it completely
Most of us have been pondering a lot on the Million $ Question
Which Laptop to Buy?????
So, I did a detailed analysis of all major laptops. I have rated each one of them on some important criteria. There are three sheets in the workbook attached. The last sheet is one in which the Price is not regarded important (as your college can get you a very reasonable price on them or you can get it from abroad). There are rankings of laptops in each sheet according to their scores. You can even add new laptops, customize / correct the importance, ratings and rankings.
Hope this helps.

Thats a good analysis dude. Have only taken a cursory look at it though. But I couldnt find any of the 1GB RAM models there...will go through it in detail after a while
