compaq certainly doesnt feature in my list of "worth a buy" brands.. few of my frnds using compaq hav faced numerous troubles n hav never been happy with their choice. that kind of puts compaq off my list..
for ppl with not much of a budget constraint.. VAIO is the one to go for
for rugged use, IBM wins hands down..
cheers
dude even i thought of buying an IBM...but my friends with compaq have had no problems.......and i certainly have no regrets of selecting compaq.
WOWWWW!! :)
this is one nice piece. Definitely worth it man!!
Anyone heard of Asus Laptops? see attached a whole list of Asus configs available in India. Pretty nice ones

yes weight is one of the issues with that laptop. but even last yr the ibm laptop that seniors got thru the bulk deal weighed 3 kgs.. if u want a lighter one it is gonna cost u a bomb.. at this price i dont u can ask for much more.. also another issue is battery life. my frnd says u get a life of 2.15 hrs to 3 hrs depending on ur use..

Hi Mave,
I checked out that deal on Dell India website after msadani posted them on the thread. The config he had mentioned was indeed there. It was at this link:
http://dellstore.sg.dell.com/public/default.jsp?c=in&s;=bsd&l;=en&prd;_id=38382
The base system was a T2300 based system, and for the T2400, Dell website was actually reducing close to 4500 bucks from the quoted price (i.e. if during customisation, you chose T2400 instead of the default T2300, then the price would REDUCE by about Rs. 4500)
I think this was a mistake by the DELL guys, and now they have removed the customisation options for the processor.
Hey msadani, if you do come across some other deals like this one, then do let us know thru this forum.
Hi Guys,
Going to SPJCM dubai-singapore this june. I already have a toshiba satellite A-15 notebook (Celeron 2.0 GHz, Microsoft Xp edition, 40 GB HDD, 256 K RAM, 14'' monitor). The SPJ site says they require the following minimum config:
Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Professional Office Tools Microsoft Office XP or 2003 Processor Centrino Memory 512 MB (minimum) Hard Disk 40 GB Optical Drive DVD-CD RW Combo Drive Screen Size 14 TFT (minimum) Wireless Card 802.11g compliant (please note 802.11 a and b would not suffice)
Two problem areas are RAM (currently my laptop has 256K RAM)and Wireless card (No wireless module at present) . I believe both these things can be added to the system (I hope 802.11g can be added to A-15 series).
Now my question is that after adding the wireless card, would it still be considerably inferior to Centrino technology. Would the current laptop serve the purpose after add-ons or do i need to buy a new laptop? I can get these add-ons within 5K bucks easily else i'll hv to shell out additional 50K for a centrino lappy. Is heating up that serious a problem in non-centrino lappies. Something else that Centrino provides, that I would miss out with the upgradations. Please help.

Just checked out the HP Pavilion dv5118TX specs. The config sounds too good to be true for 64K! I'm off to check up on the site if that price is right. Plus I think HP has a discount scheme for it's employees, so if you get that lappie through a HP friend then it might be even cheaper.

If you are so keen on spending 65k, then do check the Dell 6400 model with ATI Mobility Radeon 256 MB. Comes to somewhat the same price.

Now what does that sarchasm imply?

But yes, you're right...checked out the Dell 6400 model. Now this is confusing. Cant find much of a difference between the 2 models except that the HP model comes preloaded with a lot more softwares (though thats not really a problem these days).
What about the make of the graphic cards....I'm not a hardcore gamer but I would like to get a card which can handle bad-ass games as and when I get the urges. Which scores better, NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400 or the ATI Mobility Radeon 256 ?
Also, in the dell config, it says: "
Approx. 1.2GB of HDD space will be allocated to Dell Media Direct. This capacity will be hidden and non-accessible."
Whats this Dell Media Direct and why do I need to waste 1.2 GB space on it?
Oh and also, the HP model comes with Integrated Bluetooth. For Dell you gotta shell out 800/- more.

Well, I placed a quote request then. It will of course be refused by Dell at the old price (they reserve that right as per the website). Guess I'll look for one only after I get my final admit. Hopefull we have bulk deals at IIMs! Also trying for the HP5118 through a friend.

Dell Media Direct allows you to access all your mp3's and allows you to play CD/DVDs without booting windows. Helps save power you don't need to boot up your comp just to watch a movie. No biggie but Dell needs to have a mini-OS to do this which takes up about 1.2GB
Found this on Dell Website
Basic System Install (Qty 1 System)
Can anyone tell me what this means ? Can we tell them.. "I'll install Windows myself, Just send me the CD" ?
