Buying A Laptop

I bought HP compaq 6125 2 months back and am pretty satisfied with it. It is real value for money at 43K and has every little feature bundled in it. Only drwaback is that it's little on the slower side due to a shared graphic card memory. Thinking of putting another 512 mem stick in it to make it a perfect one.

HP Compaq nx6125
What i got
1.7GHz Turion 64 ML-37; ATI Radeon Express 200 128MB; 40GB HDD 5,400rpm, Fingerprint sensor, WIFI enabled, S Video Port, 1 year warranty, HP laptop bag, 256 MB RAM, FREE DOS OS, DVD CD RW combo:) 😃 😃

-ves: - No DVD RW, TV tuner Card, Smaller Memory and HDD:(

Hello Friends,
I use an "Apple iBook G4" with a DVD writer with wirless connectivity blue tooth enabled as well. 60GB hard disk and 912MB ram. The operating system is Tiger i.e a machintos version. Personally I feel its far more user friendly and faster than microsoft.I got it for around 70000 bugs (a bargained price by our college) with some original softwares which include microsoft office version for mac as well. Hope you find it useful.

finally i have update from my frnd abt the HP 5118 laptop i had mentioned earlier..

he says the battery life varies from abt 2.15 hrs to 3 hrs depending on ur usage. also if u play around with the screen brightness u can probably add some more time to the backup..

abt the heating problem, he says there is none. the amount of heat generated is the same as any other laptop. apparently there are 2 fans provided which helps the cooling..

hope it helps

cheers

also, wats the diff b/n turion n centrino..

The Intel centrino is actually a three-part all-Intel solution (processor, chipset, and wireless),the processor is a 32 bit processor pentium m processor along bundled wireless card(802.11 b/g).The chipset in this case is an intel.
A turion is a rebrandled mobile athlon 64 bit processor.Amd only manufactures processors and not chipsets.Other third-party vendors, such as VIA and Broadcom, supply AMD with chipsets and wireless.

Since one is investing so much money into buying a laptop,it is always better to go in for a amd turion which is a 64 bit as compared to an intel which is 32 bit.
Most of the next generation softwares will be 64 bit.(win vista, releasing next jan will be in both flavours,32 and 64 bit).
Intel according to press reports as of now dosnt have a any plans to manufacture 64 bit processors.

hey thanx for that info.. how u think the dual core centrino compares to the turion ?

The duo core processors are 2 seperate 32 bit processors bundled into 1,thats not the same as 1 64 bit processor.
A 64 bit futuristic application will NOT run on an intel dual core processor.
The centrino however, comes with a whopping 2 mb l2 cache as compared to the turions 1 mb l2 cache.although the amd scores over the turion in other departments.
As of todays, xperts say that the amd turion wins over the intel hand down.

It seems there are no dedicated linux threads on pg.
Ive been thinking about starting a dedicated linux thread on this forum for quite some time now but I dont really know if there r other linux lovers like me here.
Although, there are zillions of support groups related to linux on the internet, having a thread on apna pg is sumthin totally different.
What say people?

Hello Huyz .. This is Amit .. im too planning to buy 1 Lappy once i land up @ some B school. I have gone through many technical parameters and hav frozen on AMD 64bit processor ( oops .. im a game freak ) ... I am attaching a PDF file wherein u will find the ins and outs of PROCESSOR technologies like INTEL DUO CORE, What is L1, L2 Cache how it helps, What is hyper threading etc etc ...

Hope that will help you decide on your purchase.

thanx..it really helped...i used to think compaq laptops do not last beyond a month...I'll surely buy a compaq now that it has worked "perfectly" for 3 months

Isnt Centrino the same as Pentium M ? :

Centrino is a standard which includes pentium M and n Intel 855 series chipset, and an Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 (IEEE 802.11b) or PRO/Wireless 2100AB (IEEE 802.11ab) WiFi adapter

You must be kidding right ?

What made you think compaq was THAT bad ??:)

compaq certainly doesnt feature in my list of "worth a buy" brands.. few of my frnds using compaq hav faced numerous troubles n hav never been happy with their choice. that kind of puts compaq off my list..

for ppl with not much of a budget constraint.. VAIO is the one to go for
for rugged use, IBM wins hands down..

cheers

Dunno much about compaq !! ??: ??: I am still :wow: to know that it's that bad :(

Anyways, VAIO sure rocks :grab:

Have been using it for almost an year now. I have not faced any problem with it (Just that its a pain in the lap during summers 😉 )
I am also planning to buy a laptop, but the config which I am looking at are pretty high(as I want to install SAP in my laptop).
So, wanna understand, if it is ok, if one buys a basic version & upgrade the h/w. For instance I am looking at 120 GB hard disk & 1 GB RAM, is it ok if I buy a basic version & upgrade it by replacing with higher config.

Has anyone bought laptop & installed SAP, here...

Hi Guys,
I'm very very sorry if my question seems really dumb...But I had no place else to ask.
I wanted to buy a laptop of my own but MICA advises taking up the laptop they're offering as it'll help with the servicing and stuff.....Now here's my question - How much servicing does a Laptop actually need? Should I simply go in for what is being offered by an institute just for the convenience of Servicing? Is that really that big an issue?

I wonder how will MICA assist you with the servicing and all. Irrespective of where you buy the laptop from, the service is provided by the vendor only !!! It can be that they would be more prompt just because MICA is buying in bulk. But you should not face any problem with the servicing and all even if you buy it on your own !!

Found an awesome deal online... wondering if it's really as good as i think it is.. check the attached quote..

any advice is appreciated..

yes a good deal indeed.. but i think u can get better deals with brands like HP which have cut prices..

besides if u r gonna go to a b-school, its better if u take their bulk deals.. damm cheap n worth every buck u shell out
