Buying A Laptop

hiya ppl,
my hunt for an inexpensive lappy continues.
got an email from esys.they seem to have the most inexpensive laptop of 'em all.
uploading the quotation that was sent to me.
unde the EB 6310,it is mentioned that the lappy cannot be debundled, now what does that mean?

DDR Ram has 3-4 versions eh ?
333, 553, 667 Mhz and all ? Any major diff ?

Speeds at which the respective RAM will run. Your purchase will accordingly depend on the type of Motherboard you have. Also, should i mention RAM latencies ?? Dont worry about those if you are not going to overclock/are not a hard core gamer.

At 1 point of time both Ketan and I were hunting for >128MB of SD-RAM. Ketan found 512MB sticks , paid a fortune for them only to find to his dismay that the RAM wasnt compatible with his system. Unfortunately if they wldnt run on his system, they wldnt even run on mine.
Mav, I hope you know that Desktop RAM and laptop RAM are two completely different entities. You will get desktop RAM at unbelieveable prices but laptop RAM is more expensive. Dont mess with the warranty by trying to add your RAM at a local chappie. GOd forbid, there's a disaster tomorrow, the moment the DELL people see different RAM, your warranty will become null and void. think abt it. you anyway spending a bomb on it,when bringing it fm the US, might as well pinch yourself a li'l more and put in the new RAM now itself.

Just my thoughts

well said dude..Mave...it is always advisable to get ur lappie administered by the Dell itself...remember few 100$ would only be a one time investment..at least for a few years to come..!!

Yes DDR has 4 versions.the follow r the details
DDR-200: DDR-SDRAM memory chips specified to run at 100 MHz
DDR-266: DDR-SDRAM memory chips specified to run at 133 MHz
DDR-333: DDR-SDRAM memory chips specified to run at 166 MHz
DDR-400: DDR-SDRAM memory chips specified to run at 200 MHz

DDR2 which is nowadays used in most lappys is better and faster than DDR.It operates ata a higher clock frequency.

It also has 4 major types
DDR2-400: DDR-SDRAM memory chips specified to run at 100 MHz, I/O clock at 200 MHz
DDR2-533: DDR-SDRAM memory chips specified to run at 133 MHz, I/O clock at 266 MHz
DDR2-667: DDR-SDRAM memory chips specified to run at 166 MHz, I/O clock at 333 MHz
DDR2-800: DDR-SDRAM memory chips specified to run at 200 MHz, I/O clock at 400 MHz.
Hope that helps 😃

Found some really good links, they've explained everthing abt FSB,DDR,SDRAM n so on...

@pranks,

and yeah check some Thinkpad models which come for
Yeah obviously it makes sense to go in for 64bit

Abt the HT thing, why dont you try it and see how it goes?

As for the 512MB Ram, if your motheboard doesnt support it,I dont think you'll see performance benefit. Though I am inclined to think that the system would have difficulty recoginising the RAM in such a situation. Try a Mem test or CPU-ID to see RAM frequency. Then again, are you using applications that are RAM intensive or you simply surfing the net?

tried switching off HT with no noticable difference.. so hav left it on.. MAYBE some applications do make use of it..

my MB is compatible with ddr 400.. checked that in the bios as well as the XP system config..

i game a lots and i think most of them r ram intensive. even here i dont find an difference in performance. probably its only coz of the lack of proper graphics card..

cheers

The thinkpad models that sell for I wouldnt suggest those.
When 1 can get a turion/centrino lappy for around 40k why go for a lower config lappy?

ok. now here is one more querry..

as far as processors are concerned, which among these are considered the best for a lappy..intel Centrino, intel mobile M, AMD turion..

also, what is the basic difference between these ?

AFAIK, they're both the same-
Pentium M's the processor and Centrino's the technology...

For laptops, Centrino I guess is the most popular. Centrino DUO is their latest offering.
As far as I know, there's no diff b/w Petium M and Centrino processors. :robot:

well a p4 mobile is optimised for notebooks..it consumes less battery..(prolly can work at lower clock speeds) ..also it doesnt have the wireless capability of a centrino..

there is some diff i guess.. coz my bro had a dell laptop which says pentium mobile m.. there is no mention of centrino anywhere. it did not have wireless. he had to get a seperate card installed to enable wireless..

also, wats the diff b/n turion n centrino..
