Buying A Laptop

Ok the drool slurrps were for the machine but I am repeating Maverick's question , Heating issue... has anyone used a Duo.. and how often does the second processor need to be fired up if the most massive application I use is a PC game and how often does the machine heat up.

BTW kplchdhry i think the quote you have for a Dell Machine is wrong because Maverick has also mentioned the same price range as for the HP machine above.

And Dell sells an Inspiron E1705 at $949 (today's price) which is INR 42,230 + taxes this is today's price for a 17" video
http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/entnb_e1705?c=us&cs;=19&l;=en&s;=dhs

and Dell sells a Intel Duo machine called Inspiron 6400 at INR 53305 +taxes and shipping which is today;s price for a standard config .

hate to do it but Dell also has a ICICI pay in instalment scheme... now if Duo it is I think it makes more sense to buy a Dell.

PS> Voluntery Disclosure::: I work for Dell.

Harsh, if you work for DELL , may I ask you a favour. DO check and lemme know about the over-heating factor for the Dual Core. There's so much being bandied about here but I am not entirely convinced ki that is actually the case w.r.t to over heating. Power consumption Yes Over-Heating-I dont know

Thanks Mate

SPJAIN and XLRI has made it cumpolsory to buy a Laptop.

While reseraching about NOTEBOOKS, i come across so many terms that it fuels further confusion. please help.

SPJAIN has asked for this configuration

1 Mb cache/ 400 MHZ FSB
256 MB upgradable to 2048 Mb DDR RAM of 266 Mhz

LI-ion battery backup for 3 hrs of duration

Win Xp Pro-operating system

They have asked for 85,000/- for the same. Guys please help if the similar configuration could be purchased for less. : Also meaning of terminologies used.

regards
rohit

dude,
thats a decent config, tho u might want a bigger hard disk and 1.7 GHz is a better option according to me. it depends on ur use. if u r planing to use heavy duty s/wares like cad etc u may wanna go in for 512 mb ram. anyting more than that is not required me thinks.
btw i did a lot of research and came up with the following results:

1) of all the laptops in the market go in for either dell, ibm or HP. even tho they r slightly more expensive, they will last since the various parts are in complete harmont with each other. ya i know it may sound a little wierd but believe me itll pay off in the long run. i have been an HP user now for 5 yrs and let me tell u an HP having a similar config to an acer works much faster. cannot explain why!!

2) Go in for a 2mb cache instead of 1mb and a dual channel ram!!
3) to save some cost u cud lose the fdd since no one uses them anyway. and go for a laptop with a DVD rw super drive. not much difference in price there.
4) finally go in for a radeon 300 graphics card. i dont think one needs more than that.

5) u cud cut down on the bells and whistles they offer like battery packs, free 3 yr warranty etc. will save u some money there.

now for the important part-- the price.
man the price u quoted rs 85 grand is way too high. let me tell u a dell inspirion 6200 series will cost u abt rs 65000 with discount on the net and an IBM R 52 witha little upgrade abt 70 grand max. nothing more. and in case u can get a few more ppl from ur college to pool in u cud swing an even better deal. discounts of the order of abt rs 6000 to 8000 are easily available.
so there, i hope that is of some help. as i said u'd be better not goin for acer or toshiba or even compaq for that matter.

yaar,
i have a colleague who has a 17" dell inspiron and he regrets it big time man. if u r travelling ( and unfortunately he does) its a major headache carting it around. btw he uses it as an exercise weight while on tour. he he.. so unless u wanna watch a lot of hollywood movies and play high end games its better to go in for a smaller screen.

you are a little late on advising on the quoted config.....late by 2 years

Hey.. I was searching on the net for the over-heating factor of Duo Core processors.. Couldn't find anyone having reported problems like that...

If someone can throw more light on this 'heating' thingie, it'll be great...

Hi,

I found a really good and comprehensive review on the dual core processor, along with comparisons to the other available processors. Definitely a site worth a visit. 25 pages of awesome info is present there. Check it out.

most of the b-schools now have made a laptop compulsary.. and besides its always better to have a laptop coz of the portablity factor. and the campuses are all wi-fi enabled so u can be connected to the world on the move

besides most brands have now laptops startin from as low as 30k which is pretty much the cost of a PC.. so makes more sense to get a lappy

cheers

I have been using a Compaq laptop for years now.my two cents ..
1.go for a machine with 512 mb ram.else it aint worth it.
2.a laptop performance is generally not at the same level as a desktp with the same config.atleast that has been my experience.
3.also go for a good config now..since u will not really be upgrading and the options are pretty limited.

Hey funkypratik,

I was browsing throught the DELL INDIA website, and trying to build a similar config as that of the HP we are discussing above on this thread. I found Dell's price to be better than HP. Look at the config below:

N540316 - Dell Inspiron(TM) 6400 Intel(R) Core(TM) Duo Processor T2300 Notebook

Intel(R) Core(TM) Duo Processor T2300
Genuine Windows(R) XP Professional (English)
15.4" Wide Screen XGA TFT Display with Truelife(TM):1280x800
1024MB (2 X 512MB) DDR2 SDRAM
Dell(TM) Optical USB Mouse
80GB SATA Hard Drive
Internal 8X DVD+/-RW Combination Drive with dual layer write capabilities
Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945 Dual Band 802.11a/g 54Mbps Wireless Mini Card
9-cell 85Whr Lithium Ion Primary Battery
one spare 90W Primary AC Adapter (110V/220V)
Dell(TM) Wireless 350 Bluetooth Module
Intel(R) Media Accelerator 950 Graphics Up to 128MB shared system memory

All this for Rs. 65,471 excluding taxes (the HP is 65k).

Differences between the HP and the above config:

1.> HP offers XP Home; this one has XP Prof (have heard that XP Prof is better than XP Home for networked environments)
2.> Screen resolution is marginally better
3.> Battery Life would be 50% more, since it's a 9-cell batt
4.> Optical mouse and one spare adapter included
5.> The NVIDIA GeForce card (present in HP) is not present here. Instead, there's an Intel(R) Media Accelerator 950 Graphics card. For non-gamers like me, this should be ok since it should be consuming lesser power (hogged by the NVIDIA)..
6.> Replaced 100 GB (of HP) with 80 GB in this config.. (Should be enough, especially because there's a DVD-Writer)

So, what do you think of this config yaar???

hey,

have used the apple notebook of a frnd and i find the performance really amazing when compaed to a similar spec windows run system. the display is something u can just not beat. but the catch is software compatiblity. besides software for mac systems are not readily available in india..

if u r looking at using the system mainly for net surfing, office work and movies/music.. then u might as well go for it.. but if your use goes beyond that to gaming, trying out new softwares and other nick nacks, u better stick to windows..

Thanks funkypratik,
i would be going for mba studies.. so have to relly look into the s/w compatibility and stuffs !! Please suggest if u know how it is going to fit the purpose.

So, what do you think of this config yaar???

its a good config.. as far as the xp version goes it really does not matter coz i have xp professional with me.. u can always get it..

even the HP model has a DVD writer..
optical mouse is not a big deal coz its available for 400 bucks odd..

the main catch for me is the graphics card. i am kinda interested in racing games which need a lot of graphics processing power.. for u i think the dell is equally good :)

and yeah the battery is a big concern with the HP. lets c wats the feedback from my frnd..

wats the weight of the dell model ?
