Thanks funkypratik, i would be going for mba studies.. so have to relly look into the s/w compatibility and stuffs !! Please suggest if u know how it is going to fit the purpose.
in that case i wud say u better stick with windows. some of the software u will be heavily using is EXECL and WORD.. i am not sure if these are available for the MAC system. if its not u might be in trouble sharing ur work with ur frnds..especially when workin in a group..
Both are god damn cheap But are they worth it ?? Afterall its a question of my dad's hard earned money
They must be good. But, I would suggest that you go for the other well known brands.....HP/Dell/Sony. And if the budget is tight...u can try zenith/wipro/acer
I'm also in the hunt for a good notebook.. Btw , just had a look at the config for dell. Whats the diff in having a single 1024MB RAM card and 2*512MB card , both are DDR2 models, Clock speeds also similar... There's a huge proce diff on this . Any gyaan on this?

try google to get more info abt this..
cheers
Its definitely available in MAC (a whole suite is there) but Windows would be a better option for u cuz of the fact that most of the ppl around u wud b working on that. Compatibility could be an issue if u decide on a MAC. Think ocer it. Even I would suggest a Windows based machine..
most of the b-schools now have made a laptop compulsary.. and besides its always better to have a laptop coz of the portablity factor. and the campuses are all wi-fi enabled so u can be connected to the world on the move
besides most brands have now laptops startin from as low as 30k which is pretty much the cost of a PC.. so makes more sense to get a lappy
cheers
is it really worth buying a laptop of 30k. as suggested in other posts dat laptop can't b upgraded so shud v spend a gud amount on laptop or just compromise on varoius features & buy a cheaper one. cant v do with a pc

usually most lappies have only 2 RAM slots... so...
scenario1- u buy 2x512MB, it works well for now, but sometime later u decide to upgrade ur RAM, u'll definitely have to chuck one or both of ur RAMs and get one of a bigger memory...
whereas,
scenario2- u buy 1024MB RAM, it works well for now, and after a while u feel like upgrading it, so u still have a vacant slot, so just buy another RAM (whichever's available then) and plug it in and enjoy... this way u dont lose any memory that u had...
that's my take on it... if someone else has anythin else to add to it, please do...
well..all that talk about upgrading..i have many friends.who use laptops and i have been using too..trust me . its not a feasible option..for many resons.. cost..and technology gets outdated so quickly..so u would be better off going for a new notebook than for a upgrade.. and u also have limited options.
@funkypratik: The weight is not mentioned on the DELL site... But I think it would be heavier when compared to the HP, because of the presence of 9-cell battery. Anyways, will request for this info from them and update here..
BTW, did you recieve any feedback from your friend on the HP battery life and heating thingie...
@maxter: I agree with 'The Gr8 One' that most laptops have 2 slots for the RAM. That's why, even on sites where you can customise your laptop, you'll normally find Memory option in 1 or 2 Dimm only. Anyways, I think a 1 GB RAM would suffice for the next 4-5 years atleast. Then, we can get a new one. 😃 So, no use of paying all the extra moolah for a 1-Dimm RAM yaar. "Utilize available resources to the maximum" -> that's what we ought to do as "managers", right??...:D 😁 😁

4-5yrs??:wow::shock::shock: You'll be lucky if your 1GbRam lasts you for 1 year LOL!! Most resources today recommend 512Mb RAM in 4-5years it'll be the equivalent of having 64Mb of RAM today 😁 :D

2x512 Dual Channel Memory will outperform a 1x1024 Single Channel Memory anyday.
Think of the2x512 as working with 2 hands sorting out 2 different things. You'll be working faster than working with 1 hand sorting out the 2 things
And you'll also get a decent price for your Dual Channel memory when you eventually decide to dispose of it.

hey neo,
single channel and dual channel... i'm really confused now... i thought his query was bout 2 sticks of 512MB each Vs. one stick of 1024MB...
..so u would be better off going for a new notebook than for a upgrade.. and u also have limited options.
consider a lappie worth 50k... after a couple of yrs, would u rather spruce it up with a lil bit more of ram or get another one for 50k?.... as long as i'm just gonna be using word, excel, surfing, powerpoint and an odd game... i know what i'd do///...
well i agree with u there..u would obviously add some ram.. but the point i wanted to make is no way should u expect that are going to change everthing else..like a desktop.. and apart from ram or maybe a hdd ur options are limited.

yes, definitely, i agree with u there... almost ethin else is use-n-thro...
And trust me -- the 2sticks are better than the 1 stick
When Neo says something about Comps, you better agree.
That HP model is one hell of a machine. I am looking for laptops something in the range of 60-70k. The other model I am looking is the Dell Dual Core Laptop.
Someone tell me how long this 6 cells and 9 cells batteries last ? And also, wrt Graphics cards, ATI et al come out with diff cards for desktops and Lappies ?

Hey Thanks
Yup there are different cards for desktops and lappies. Also depends on your motherboard whether you want PCI cards or AGP cards.
You'll do realise that the best gaming experience can only be experienced on a Desktop
