Talking about laptops, Suppose a person has an office laptop, can he get another one from the US citing personal reasons ?
MavericK, honestly speaking, you can't really reason with the Customs guys in India. Its all a matter of luck (based on my experience). I'll quote one example for ya...
I had visited UK some time back and one of my colleagues was carrying two laptops (thanx to a really awesome sale by DELL in UK) and they did not even bother to ask him about it. On the other hand, I was next in line and they spotted iPod in my hand. Their very next question was if I was carrying any more of those in my luggage.
I replied in the negative quite confidently n they blvd me where as I was carrying two more for of those my friends. Hope u got the point. It was all a matter of luck in my case.
You just need proper channels, is what I was told. The relative managed to bring it in all tax free and stuff. :)
cheers!!!
That's another way out. BTW, I was lucky with the duty-free alcohol as well.....managed to smuggle a good 6 bottles instead of the permissible limit of 2 (all in my hand luggage).

as far as my knowlege goes, import duty on laptops has been removed. so u can get one laptop every visit abroad. the official laptop that you will be carrying with you will anyway have to be declared when u leave the country. so shud not be a prob
More than that I need to know someone who's returning back from the states before May.. and more imp doesnt have a laptop.
Even if they have a laptop and can get rid of the casing and packaging and stuff, they can bring in the extra laptop citing professional need. They would need to carry it on their person, of course.
Our own Oxy is out and about at the moment How about touching him for one?
can anybody tell me brand and model of a laptop within 30k types-i mean low priced ones-i need cd writer and wifi comulsorily.....im nt sure abt the price range and models-so a bit less/more will do.

can any1 suggest me?
thnks in advance
dude u can check out brands like zenith and acer. they have some low end laptops. u can always get a cd-writer as an addon of its not in the stock model..
also try getting it from abroad as u can get much better specs for the same price
one more thing.. now that u r so keen abt the cd-writer i say i go in for a combo drive. it will be quiet helpful as dvd are fast becoming the de-facto media.. besides it wont cost a lot over a cd-writer
of course AMD is preferred for gaming but does it make a difference if u plan to have a good dedicated graphics card ?
The whole architecture of AMD(A64) is different when compared to Intel(P4s). The AMD chips kicked ass!! and currently wear the crown of best price/performance or performance/price (whichever way u want to look at ) Of course Conroe apparently kicked ass! at the CeBit but that's still 6months away fm hitting the stores so wait and watch.
As for performance with a top notch graphics card, unless you are one of those hard-core professional gamers who overclocks their chips and RAMs,you'll notice only a slight performance when it comes to AMD over Intel
My personal recommendation? Unless you already have an Intel system, dont buy anything for a while say 6months. Then Intel's Conroe hits the market and we'll see a definite cut in prices for the regular chips

i was not aware of the conroe chip.. read it up. sounds good. but 6 mnths maybe too long a wait given that most b-schools start by june end. is intel listening !
well i am not that hardcore a gamer.. but i do play a lot of racing games which are graphics hungry. besides even if amd does not offer a significant advantage, it will be cheaper.. wat say ?
i am currently using a 2.4ht desktop and am pretty happy with the performance :)
guys Have a look at this website http://www.zenith-india.com/2005/interest_buy.asp what do u have to say abt the 38 k laptop. Its got a intel centrino processsor, wifi enabled 256 ram n so on. I think its a gr8 deal considering the fact that a similar acer laptop would cost u around 43k and an hp compaq cums for around 48 k. Hows the after sales services? I am planning to buy the 38 k laptop,I think its called stratergist, what do ya guys say?
Umm, looks like a decent laptop. They havent mentioned anything about weight or battery life , again 256Mb is a tad low and so is the 40GB disk. Also I am not sure Zenith has great products. I know they are decently priced and all that but I distinctly remember a friend telling me that the Zenith Desktops used to overheat quite a bit. There still havent been any benchmarks for the Zenith laptops atleast as far as i know and since Intel processors the FSB seems kinda low though good going with the 2Mb cache! How about a low end Toshiba prolly only slightly more expensive than this and almost the same config?

Any idea about the cost of Laptops if one buys them from mainland China ... Xinxiang Provience.
And are the brands available there along with the Global Warrantee.
no idea of prices in china but i know that there is lots of bargaining.. and i guess since most of these products are manufactured in china it shud be cheap out there. quiet a few brands offer global warranty.. thought they might charge u an extra amount for that..
