its strange that there are nt many dell owners on this forum,im planning to buy a dell 630m laptop.i researched a lot on varous brands and ill give a brief description of wat i think of other brands
acer:i had considered acer but acer is not as sturdy as a dell laptop and it gets scratches easily plus it has a very low quality body though the crystal brite screen looks awesome.the amd turion(acer aspire series)looks great,is feature packed but gets heated up quite easily and is quite uncomfortable if u use it on ur lap.and the battery backup has always been an issue wid acer.it has a 6 cell battery and gives 2.5 hrs of backup.believe me if u r getting a laptop 2 increase mobility u need much more than tat.another plus point is its keyboard, its a wide keyboard nd if u have swollen fingers like mine its jus bout perfect 4 u.the sound quality is also average.
compaq:WOW! is the first thing tat comes 2 ur mind after havin a luk at ne compaq.awesome looks, great for gaming, the sound quality is superb.the v200 series is real value for money.i was not interested in compaq lappys cos i feel they r a slight lower version of hp nd wid hp offering same config at 2-3k extra why go 4 compaq.i know many ppl wud differ on dis.
hp:the new pavillion widescreen series is fantabulous, the sound quality is good..looks absolutely awesomely fantastic.the dv1376tu model is great.has a scratch proof coating nd believe me its really scratch proof(tried 2 scratch it unsuccessfully at a hp outlet ),its got a media centre feature, which means tat u can listen music nd watch movies widout booting ur windows which saves ur battery life.its a great feature nd the media centre thing takes only 15-20 secs 2 start up,but dis feature eats up a lot of disk space around 7-8 gb.nd its got a remote 2.the keyboard again has killer looks wid all the play pause fwd buttons and all of the keys are back lit looks amazing it hasa 14 in widescreen nd gives it a really compact look,nd is great if u want 2 view 2 windows simultaneously.the weight is 2.4 kgs nd is quite ok 4 a 14 in screen lappy.the only negative is the 6 cell battery which again would give a battery backup of nt more than 2.5 hrs nd its nt upgradeble.nd the price 66k is also a bit high.
now comes my baby...
DELL:loks great though a bit thick(1.5")but looks very sturdy.dell claims that it has a scratch proof coating.i couldnt try scratchin cos dell has no retail outlets.the 630 m model comes wid a 1.73 ghz proc.,400 mhz fsb.the display is 14 " widescreen and if u spend 600 extra u can get a true life screen which is gloss coated nd looks great.the pros are low price the same config as hp dv1376tu+1024mb ram+leather case(in hp normal case)+9 cell lbattery, all dis only for 52k.the battery is a major plus point.it lasts around 7 hrs wid music on.though the 9 cell battery sticks out a lil fromthe bottom nd looks odd.another +ve is dell reliability nd customer care,in case of retail outlets am never sure of getting a genuine product, cos they have the authority 2 change the config nd i wont like my laptop 2 be opened at a retail outlet, tat is y i prefer dell. negatives is tat it gets heated up if charged nd used simultaneously,nd thickness though it weighs only 2.4 kgs it is 1.5" thick.but if u don want 2 go 4 ibm or vaio ultra slim notebooks it wont luk odd 2 u.the sound quality is above average.nd yes this baby also comes wid a media centre feature.
this post is based on my opinion nd pls correct me if im wrong.
nd am a lil confused b/w the 14" widescreen and the 15.4"widescreen display.feel gettin a 15.4" wud be compromising on mobility and compactness and gettin a 14" w wud be compromising on media quality,so nebody who has used both pls help me out.
cheers

i dunnomuch bout compaq but its got amazing sound quality nd killer looks.as for ibm i dun know a single person who has used ibm nd is not satisfied wid it,i didnt get much into ibm as they r very high on price,nd looks nd the sound quality also is average.but in terms of reliability it certainly is the best of the lot.i wished i had 50k xtra i cud have got the t series notebook.;).

seems u r lukin 4 a desktop replacement nd u need it for heavy graphics work. this toshiba model,i guess im nt sure comes wid a ATI Radeon x700 128MB Card.if it has dis graphics card it wud work fine for all ur heaviy applications like photoshop, animation etc.nd its physical appearance is very pleasing .the toshiba wxga display is a major plus as compared 2 the hp model.the hp graphics card shares ur ram so it wud make ur system a bit slow ,oderwise it wud do well.but whichever u go 4 do get ur RAM upgraded 2 at least 512.1024 wud be awesome.
sourabhno01 SaysHEY guys plz tell which one wil be better HP OR IBM...

I would suggest that u buy a second hand lappy thru some trusted source (family, friend or some 1 else who is trustworthy). Nehru Place would be a bit dangerous. You can never find out some minor problems with the laptop by jus having a brief demo of the thing !! (My personal opinion)

I have the Dell I-6000. Chose it over the Thinkpad, as the costs were way different.
Great machine, the Dell.
