Buying A Laptop

Ravi,
How badly do you need to buy the laptop? Can it wait awhile? Intel has already launched its dual core mobile processor and AMD is following suit.
With a little patience, you should have 1 heck of a laptop.

hey Neo.. can u be more specific abt this both laptop.. i mean confi. and price...

All of today's laptops run on Single core processors. I am sure that you know that Dual Core processors are also available. However these were only for desktops. Recently ( as in last week) Intel introduced its "Core Dual" processor for laptops. It was well receieved. The performance benefits of a dual core are far better that your HT technology which is now bombing quite badly.

AMD has announced that it will launch its version of the Dual COre later this year.

However what you do have to realise is that these will not be cheap. Currently the AMD dual core retails at 30k+ for a desktop. It makes more sense to run a dual core on your dekstop than your laptop. Again, battery life will be a major factor. Do you want nearly twice the computing power at 1/2 the battery life??
Most B-school students can manage extremely well with a single core processor and a dual core would be overkill for them. It all comes down to what you want that laptop for.

I bought an Acer 4000 from Dubai back in August... back then it was a killer deal...

Centrino 1.7, 2MB L2 Cache...
256 RAM, 40 HDD, 15.4 TFT... And a free travel case...

This for 40k... but now the price has come down like mad... Even when i went back to the gulf this year... the prices of the laptops now stunned me!

Dudes... i had a problem with my adaptor though... for some reason it didn't work, and i had to buy a new Adaptor... chinese one for 3k... the oeiginal Acers cost 9k or something... the dude who sold me the adaptor said, "this is why we keep telling ppl not to buy from the gulf... but they think it's cheap there so buy from there"... go figure... any thoughts on this, peeps?

Hi,

Compaq is a perfect deal , just except the fact that battery qualty degrades very early , ull start getting a back up of one & a half hour just at the end of an hour .... My personal experience , i owe one ..

Cheers

Guys... my optical drive is a combo... in the future if i wanna go for a DVD writer, then will i have to, necessarily, go for an external drive?

And what are the current prices?

Thanks,

Great thread.

I'm trying to figure out whether it is worth me buying such gear in the U.S. - latest, cutting edge computer, laser printer, etc. and bringing them over in my luggage or whether prices and availability are not that bad in India.

For example, in Romania, prices were usually 20-30% or more higher than U.S., so whenever I wanted to upgrade my computer, ink jet printer, scanner, etc. I would buy on my next trip home and bring over.

Does anyone know a web site of a store that I can check out what computer gear, printers, etc. they carry and the cost? Any New Egg, CompUSA, etc. like stores online in India?

Based on the laptop discussion, it appears best to buy in U.S. and bring over? Or are prices more even with U.S., etc., for desktops, inkjet and laser printers, etc.

Great thread.

dear concert...
check out this website

http://www.npithub.com/

hope IT helps

Hey Concert,
It is definitely cheaper to get systems from the US into India. More so if they are state of the art like the 7800GT or the Opteron175+DfILanBoy or the Raptor Drives or..................
Er, you get my drift
Plus you can always easily knock-off a few hundreds on items that are listed on web-sites. All you gotta do is Bargain!!!

p.s. Great work on your other 2 threads.

Getting Laptops & small PC parts from US is much better rather than printers and scanners .The duty on them will be high ... as for the small componenets , undervalue them ( say some old generation part name like a geforce mx 440 graphic card for a 7800 gt and u might get away ).

not many sites in india where you can get stuff online ...
theitdepot.com is one 😃

Hi there

Have joined the site of late. I hav an IBM Laptop R 40 e. Machine is good and performs well. Heat and workload no problems. Screen is smaller than compaq 14" and key operation slightly cumbersome. Battery life is low and gives problems rest the sys is good for rough use and carraige.

guys,

pour in your opinion...

got a few generc questions...

1. does it matter which brand the laptop is?...
ibm/compaq/dell etc... aren't the processors inside all the same anyways?... (cosidering they're all the same intel centrinos) ...
or is it like a certain brand's known for a particular quality?...

2.if the brand does matter, what would be the rankings?

3. as far as RAM is concerned, does having 512mb or 1 gb make that much of difference??...
if u think that the max work being done would be surfing, documents, ppts, burning or even the occasional game...

4.i have a cousin coming from the gulf.
how much more would it be cheaper there?. someone told me 40%. any idea?. any disadvantages of getting one from there?.

looking for help,

SAM

*bump*

thought i'd bump up the thread... decided on the config...

centrino 1.8, 1GB RAM, 80GB HDD, DVD Writer....

now gotta look at the brands

^^ hey, thats a good config...whats your budget like?

I dont know how much you know about acer ...but the aspire series is brilliant. the pentium M is definately the best processor in town right now. I would also advice you to have a look at the amd 64 bit turion processor ..very reliable.

I like acer because it has a good config and is not heavy to carry around around 2.8 kgs usually with a 15.4' screen . The HP's are slightly more bulkier. I dont trust compaq..they are flimsy and from personal experience stay away from them. The IBMs are great ..like someone said they are good for rough use and carriage..with the pentium m they are also a good buy.Check toshiba out ..i dont know much but the satellite series is pretty popular.and if you want a real good looking compact very light weight(1.8 kgs) then go for a fujitsu but a 13' screen.

decide what you want to do with your lappy since most of them are not gamer friendly and if they are they come for a premium price. If you are an avid gamer look for one with a ideal graphics card (nvidia etc).

get the amd 64 bit if you want to run windows vista on your lappy.
