Hi guys (and gals!),

I read somewhere (on the HP-Compaq forum in fact) that the cooling fan of all HP-Compaq laptops remains on at all times. Does this affect battery life or other performance of the lappie adversely??




i m not too happy with hp-battery life for P4s ... its just arnd 2 hrs... or even less than tht ... i dont know whthr its got to do with coolin system ... but yah ... it never gets heated up ... thts really good thing ... coz u wont like a damn hot laptop on ur laps

guys one more thng...like i'll b buyin lappy frm US..bt i heard dat...if a person gets more dan 1 lappy he needs to pay duty for it...n sthng like if u get 1 laptop..n u mention it as its yers...den dey put its entry in2 yer paasport...so guyss tell me hw did ya getit...um' mean geting it courierd wud obv. b costly n hw much wud b duty charges like..yaar plzz giv sum insight in2 dis asap...coz if i ask my frd ..he wud b gettin his own lappy n myn 2...bt will he hv 2 pay duty on it ?

it doesnt make sense to ship it or pay the duty on it, u would rather buy it from here itself. its true that a person can get only one laptop along, getting another one will attract duty. and as far as stamping for passport goes it doesnt make a diff, the officials wont make a noise if they find the laptop missing on the person's way back to US.

seems to b quite expensive ... wiht only 256MB RAM and 40G HDD ...

gettin frm ind or usa ??? ...(its like 1300 $ equivalent ... nd tht seems to b real expensive ...) ... even in india look for the deals ... i heard ibm ppl were offerin a real good piece with similar configs for 53k ... just read somewhr on pg ... if i find the post will incl the link over here ... go thru the last 3-4 pages of this thread ... u might get some useful info

abt HPs performance ... its really good ... hav been using now since 9 mnths ... nd no complain ...

abt resale ... welll dont expect much of a resale value for any laptop ... coz fter 2 yrs u dont know whr the tech wud hav reached ... nd how much in damand wud b ur current configs ...

the deal sounds ok............i guess cost has risen because of winXP- prof..................just try and c if u can get 512 MB RAM with the total cost not exceeding 65k.

also wot i think dat going 4 celeron low ended ones will def. cost less now but after 2yr or so it will be completely outdated while centrino can giveus better resale...............
also my main usage will be 4 my mba4 which i think even low ended ones can go
but wot abt there reliability
reliability is more imp than cost(but with in some limits)

dont hav the mis-conception tht celerons r not reliable ... its the same company ... intel tht produces the celeron or centrino ... so reliability is same ... other thing ... if u say u r gonna use it mostly for ur mba purpose ... i wud say go for celeron-m.... all of us do hav kinda reluctancy in goin for celeron ... but its worth if u dont hav uses like core graphics ... high-end gaming ... excessive programming ... or any other process tht consume a lot of primary memory ... nd demand faster processor speed ... u wont even realize most of the time the difference between celeron nd p4 or centrino if ur usage is limited ... my room mate has been using the celeron for comp sci masters ... nd is havin no prob ...

second thing .... if u thinkin of a resale fter 2-3 yrs ... i guess ... anythin ... u wont get gr8 price for any lappy ... dude two years ... u dont know whr the technology wud b .... even centrinos not gonna fetch u tht gr8 price ... i mean the differnce might b 5-6 k in ur resale value ... but u save more rite now ....

nd as far as i remember ... abt the imb r51 ... it was centrino ...

nd one more thing .... HP is pretty good ... so dont hesitate in goin for it

Tell us whether this is the street price (includes delivery charges, taxes and everything else) ??? The advertised prices r usually less by 4-5k, coz they dont include taxes etc. If ur based in Lucknow then u may have been charged 10% CST, which mite have increased the cost.

In any case this seems to be bit on the costlier side. Check out the following dell configuration for 55k....

i'm not an expert at this, but iwould recommend a rpm of 7200 for the hdd.
also 15" and 15.4" should not make much of a diff.

consider the use that u r taking the lappy for- if u travel a lot, mishandling etc., would recommend that u also try IBM - read a lot abt. them being steady.

well itsz Kunal here... i have gone thru all the posts of around 6 pages for which laptop to buy or not but m still under a big QUESTION which one to buy.. my criteria is between 60-70k choices are DELL,SONY,HPCOMPAQ...please do help me out on this & about the specifications i would say they are .......512 MB RAM, 60GB HDD, WIRELESS LAN, COMBO DRIVE, CENTRINO MOBILE TECH, 2MB CACHE,WIN XP PRO, A BIT LIGHTWEIGHT...well these are the general things which i do want in it rest is i guess all the same.... please itsz a request do temme the rite choices among the three & y.......i dont want any confusions please... if any1 knwsz Xactly abt them please do reply back will be really greatful to him....

i wnt to buy a laptop...i am not able to decide...which company's laptops are the best for this...
i have the following choices :
IBM/Lenovo
DELL
Toshiba

I don't have as such a constraint for the price--
1000-1300$
or upto 60000 INR wud do well for me...
Since i am getting my laptop from somebody coming from US...
the main areas of concern are--
After sales service and support and compatibility with the Indian Volatge levels..back in India
The main hardware reqts are --upto 1GB RAM and 80/100GB HDD and WIFI and bluetooth connectivity and 15'' monitorTFT..and Pentium4 processor...

I also wish to know what does Centrino technology mean in case of Computers..??

A clarion call to the self-confessed LAPtop experts (yes I do mean the computer related lap tops..) around here....after an enervating 6 hrs of lappie shopping the finalselection was clinched by that eternal smile of the ravishing sales executive in the HP showrrom..which lasted all fo 20 seconds btw..:whathat:

Ravi, I've bought a laptop 7 months earlier and I'd suggest the same to you. This is COMPAQ V2448aAP, a very good lappy I guess. When I was buying it, I searched for every laptop(range till 90K) in the market and finally, I decided to buy this. In the market, only 2 laptops were better than Compaq V2 series.......that was SONY Vaio and Apple. I guess, my decision was gud coz my laptop has been listed in 100 products of the year and the best laptop of the year.

The price is around 65K and the config is:- Intel Centrino Pentium M processor 1.7 GHz, 512MB RAM, 80 GB HDD, DVD/CD Writer & Labeller, Bluetooth/wireless LAN, 5-in-1 card reader, 14.1" Widescreen with best 16:9 aspect ratio, touchpad, 3 USB ports, Win XP Home.

Consider it too, I hope u'll like it..

How badly do you need to buy the laptop? Can it wait awhile? Intel has already launched its dual core mobile processor and AMD is following suit.
With a little patience, you should have 1 heck of a laptop.
