I wouldn't recommend a Dell at this price point as Dell isn't exactly an entry level player and as such you have to make compromises in the configuration. ( e.g. In the above configurations you'll have to make do with Windows starter and 320GB HDD only.)

If you're okay with Lenovo then I'd recommend getting a G570 Laptop.

Lenovo G570 Features and Specs: OS: Free DOS
Processor: Intel Core i3-2130M Processor
Display: 15.6-inch HD LED display
1366768 pixels screen resolution
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics
3GB DDR3 RAM
HDD: 640GB Hard Disk
DVD Writer
Stereo Speakers 1.5 Watt x 2
2 Megapixel Webcam with Mic
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Gigabit Ethernet
Card Reader, HDMI, VGA, 4USB 2.0,
6 Cell battery
Weight: 2.6Kg

Prices should be around 28000-29000 Rs.

Note that it doesn't have any OS. For an additional Rs.7500 You can have the original Windows 7 Home premium form Microsoft which is far better than the starter edition.

So total costs~35500, and it covers all the essential features without any compromises.

Nopes. Windows 7 Home Basic. Unlike starter, it is a full fledged OS. Lacks the eye candy, though.

But yes, Dell is a bit expensive. Actually, it is the cost of accidental damage cover warranty they give in the first year.

I got a dell 15R, second gen i5 processor, 4GB RAM and 500GB HDD for 45K. Everyone said that there is no need to spend so much money for a second gen i5 and that a first gen would have sufficed and that I would not feel any difference as such. But I went ahead with the best config I could find anyway. Oh and also a case-Werkz bag free but its not nearly as good as the Targus.
Dell is the best option. It's the 2 year complete accidental cover warranty that took the price up by aroudn 3500.

I still have to get my laptop. In the meantime, can someone tell me how this case-werkz bag is?..has anyone got that? Im hoping its large enough to fit a few books as well.

dude the config was

15R dell inspiron (15'' HD WLED)
2nd gen i5, Win7 home premium (64 Bits), 4 GB ram, 500 GB hdd, NVIDIA GT 525M 1GB, Case Werkz Professional Backpack, with 3 years complete cover

he quoted a price of arnd 53.5k but i am getting the 8% discount for central govt. employees (my dad is one).......so the final price he said would be around 49.5k

hope it helps!!!!!

What???..there is a discount for central govt. Employees?? I didnt know that. My dad is one too. But I have already placed the order.

Hi Qs might seem redundant.. but i m in urgent need of laptop...nd i m confused between inspiron 14R nd 15R(i have planned to go for dell as sony is out of budget for me)...nd i require it only for Mba purpose nd i m not a gaming freek,....

please suggest which one should i go for...

Also can u pls throw some light on:

1. What is the diff between the i5 and i3 processors?I knw they are 1st generation and 2nd generation respectively...but i m not able to understand whihc one is better in performnce?Pls guide..(pls correct me if i m wrong in the understanding of the same)

2.Also what is the diff between home basic and home premium?nd whihc one should i go for?

1.Second gen i5/i3 processors have a far better on board graphics (HD3000) which is HD-ready, rest of the architecture remains the same, with some tweaks here and there( integrated L3, L0 etc). This results in a net increase in the system performance while content creation and decoding. Also low detail gaming (like NFS etc) is now possible without adding a discrete graphics card.

2.Please follow this link :Compare Windows - Microsoft Windows

Differences are self evident. Win7 pro retails for about 10700, Home premium for about 6600 : http://www.microsoftstore.co.in/microsoft/38/productlist/windows.aspx

Adding onto the above post. i3, i5 and i7 are three variants of Intel Processors having different levels of performance. What I wanted to add was that each of these processors have got there own first and second gen versions.

I believe you were having the misconception that i3 is the first gen and i5 is second gen, or atleast from your post thats what I understood.

Thank you m4v3r1ck and rebzin for clearing the doubt...

Can u pls tell which one should I go for 14R or 15R ...depending on the usage which would be only MBA purpose....

Thanks a lot!!

A 14R configured with i5 second generation and No GPU should suffice for all your MBA related stuff. Even an i3 second gen or i5 first gen is also good enough.

dude in fact i m also planing to buy the 2nd gen i5 inspiron 15r laptop.....
u have bought the same for 45k.can u tell me ur config plz bcoz for my config i have been quoted 4k more.
mine is 2nd gen i5, Win7 home premium (64 Bits), 4 GB ram, 500 GB hdd, NVIDIA GT 525M 1GB, targus meridian backpack, with 3 years complete cover.
hi puys,
i have come across this config,
Acer 5742g
intel i3 380M
genuine windows 7 HB
3GB ddr3 ram
500GB hdd
Nvidia gt 540m 1 Gb
15.6" hd led backlit display
1 yr warranty
Rs. 34,500/- (taxes included)
I really like this config but am a bit suspicious cos a similar config from dell costs about 4-5k more. is there a catch here ?
which one shd i go for ?
and is 2nd gen i3 better than 1st gen i3 with Nvidia gt 540m 1 Gb?
thanks in advance...

Second Gen i3-2410m is more or less same as 1st gen i3-380m when it comes to raw performance. The key difference is, even when u turn off the graphics card to maximise battery, u'll still get superior graphics performance with 2nd gen's integrated graphics unit; that's good.

However, 1st gen i3+ NVIDIA 540m is cooooool. No way in hell can an integrated graphics chip match it in performance.

How the bloody ever, if u are a linux user-forget it; NVIDIA, that is. They are notorious for not providing linux drivers.

The price diff is coz of 2 factors.
1. Dell usually sells laptops a bit costlier than its competitors
2. They come with accidental damage cover warranty in the first year. When one extends the warranty to second year, they charge abt 3.5K. So, I guess even for the first year, u can take 2.5K as the price for accidental damage cover. U can't remove it, though.

actually the acer vendor told me that with an additional amount of rs 1,000/- i can also get accidental cover the same that is provided by Dell. So its Acer for me then. 😃

I totally agree with you regarding Acer laptops. Aside from being affordable its very durable too. I have an Acer laptop which is 3 year old already and yet it is still standing great and condition though it is use for almost 24 hours.

whoa...thats a hig config they are asking for...
most of the stuff is standard though...and the price also seems fair...
the only place you can compromise is the processor you go for...
a P4 will cost you mush less but cosnsumes a lot of power...

currently, as far as branded stuff is concerned, Acer seems to be giving the most inexpensive laptops...also try getting hold of a Compaq dealer...presarios also have good deals!!!

Hi Guys

Which is better ???

AMD Radeon HD 6470M - 1GB (For ICC)

OR

Intel HD Graphics 3000 (For ICC)

Thanks!!

Well, yours is 4 grand more because of the NVIDIA graphics card and the Targus bag which I dont have.
