will there be considerable difference in quality and performance between DELL laptops and other company laptops or is it just for the brand that one needs to pay more price

I am specifically looking at the comparsion b/w Acer and Dell??

PS: hope comparsion b/w computer brands is not banned on PG

Can someone please reply on this?
I think there's a difference in after sales service but what else?

is d discount on online price for dell laptop???
People I have a doubt : My budget is 40-42 K for a laptop and I am into Gaming Addicted to the FIFA Series , Into GTA , F1 , Football Manager as Well

I am finding three options One i3 3GB RAM from HP , One with a Similar Configuration From Lenovo , and the Dell Inspiron with an i5 and 4 GB Ram

The problem is that the Dell Laptop has a 1 GB ATI Graphic Card while Lenovo has a 1 GB NVIDIA Card , my Doubt is Should I sacrifice an i5 and an Extra GB of Ram for NVIDIA?

Is there a huge difference in the performance between an NVIDIA card and an ATI One?

The performance between the two cards depends on their model no. I wouldn't say NVdia scores over over ATI or anything... You can check up on it at

The most significant diff between basic and premium, other than aero themes and media centre capabilities, is the cabability to create home networks. Most ppl don't require it, they only need to join one (home basic). And if u do require it, I suggest u go for professional (I use it in my office PC)

okay, u don't need a gaming laptop. So, processor can take a backseat here(for a change  ).

I have extensively used MS excel, and that means really to the performance limits. And unless u are running some sort of analysis or running a really complex pivot table on a huge amount of data (read: above 65K entries, and a lotta columns), and you are running multiple instances of it, your i3-380m would make it. MS access uses even lesser processor, but far more RAM than excel.

In my view, go for 4GB ram than i5, if office is all u need to run. Generally, when my office PC hangs, it is due to having only 2GB ram :embarrased: and not due to hitting the processor limits.

But, as discussed in this thread earlier, 1st gen i3 would be stretched to its limits running HD/blu ray movies. Considering that u'll watch a lot of movies in ur college , I suggest that u should go for an i5 or a secnd gen i3, bcoz if u put in a graphics card, u are very well into gaming laptop category(considering how DELL is hell bent on giving ATI 5650, a mid-high range card with its laptops).

Hey Dragonfire/ other puys,

Would need some inputs from your side:

I was looking to buy a laptop in the range of 50K.

Needs :

1. All the various MBA related things - MS Office, browsing, downloads etc.
2. Torrent Downloads (Movie, Music, Games and Softwares)
3. Watching movies, listening to music
4. Medium amount of Gaming (Mainly EA Sports - FIFA,Cricket, and a few LAN based games, and at times graphic heavy games too....just for the sake of experiencing the same)
5. Good battery Life and should not heat up like an oven.:lookround:
6. Hard disk capacity - 500GB even 320 would do.
7. RAM - atleast 4GB and upgradable for later.
8. Would love to have a nice graphics card, you never know when u would need one.
9. I would mind saving money on the above mentioned budget.
10. Should surely be good on the looks part and a nice sturdy finish.

I want the laptop to perform good for around 2-3 years, post to which I would surely upgrade to another one. But during the mentioned period, it shouldnt be of any kind of bother.
Also I prefer my laptops to have a premium finish and looks and would not mind a 14 inch screen size. Infact, the more sleek it is, better it is for me. Not a 17-inch for sure.

Laptops shortlisted :

1. HP DV6 6107TX(i7) or 6016TX(i5)
2. HP DV4 3016TX - yet to be launched in India, I believe
3. Dell XPS 15
4. Sony VAIO - some laptop in white which has amazing looks but aint sure of the model number.

Any other laptops which fits the bill, please let me know.

What all accesories would you recommend along with the laptop? I want a wireless mouse for sure- any brands??

Just for some information sake and a little out of curiosity, I was also looking at HP Envy 14 (it is also getting the 2nd Gen processor but its a little too expensive) and also the Apple Macbook Pro 13-i5. Both these are expensive but they look alluring.
Do you have any idea about how the Macbooks perform if I load it with Windows 7 using boot camp?

hi all,

I finally bought Sony Viao VPCEB42EG (white).
It's awsome..

i3 procesor, 320GB, 2GB + 2GB = 4GB RAM (upgraded)
Cost 34K.. (I got discount)

You can see the laptop features here
VPCEB42EG : E Series : VAIO Laptop & Computer : Sony India

Thanks,
Akhil

Can neone suggest me a gud laptop with i3 & 14 inch screen below 28000?
I can get 25% discount in Samsung. how is it?
And what about Acer? It seems to be giving best config in this range.
I dont mind taking 1 without OS.

Pointwise reply: :-P

1, 2: any would do, even an 32K laptop with 4GB RAM would pull through.

3,4: go for graphics card, atleast 1 GB. Doesn't hurts to play safe, and u have the budget for the same too.

5, 10. Generally, HP builds sleeker laptops than dell, and with better cooling too, even if marginally. Dell is renowned for running a bit hotter than usual, i.e. AMD + graphics card + DELL is practically equal to a blanket warmer. Very useful for ppl staying in hostels during delhi winters. (just kidding!)

Dunno abt sony or mac, but other units u mentioned do have discrete GPU, and good ones at that.

One point though, u'll naturally be taking a 2 yr warranty. Now dell gives something called XPS premier service with their XPS series, which costs abt 5k for 2nd year and is deemed to be better than the accidental cover which comes with their inspiron series, costing 3.5 k for 2nd year. Maybe they give a foot massage or something in the XPS premier service, else what more could one require than accidental cover?

Do check what is the price of accidental cover in sony, I hear it is cheaper than dell XPS premier service.

As far as any questions abt Apple is concerned, remember, Apple is the holy grail of personal computing. now, if only they were to stop acting so snobbish.......else they are perfect in everything(figuratively speaking).

Still, my advice is, go for HP or Dell. Value for money and good service.

P.S. I'm a sony hater and Apple is too expensive

I concur with all your points, and even I am hardcore sony hater. But still i feel that the only lappies in the budget of 50-55k range are the XPS 15 and the sony vaio C-series. The sony C-series is actually quite a good deal when compared to usual sony stuff and HP is still to introduce 2nd generation in India...

ny particular reasons for being a sony hater???

Can anyone tell me which is the best option for a laptop within 40,000 range??Also,do tell me how much time does it take for a dell laptop to arrive if i order it online???

@dragonfire nd oders...I'm unable to find a suitable configuration to go for with respect to the requirements I mentioned earlier..1stly I want to knw hw much will be the diff of 1st gen i5 processor over 1st gen i3..If I get 1 GB switchable graphic card+4GB RAM in i3 processor...will the notebook still hang in routine tasks??

2ndly most dealers have been telling me that ATI 5470 nd 6470 cards are gud enough for all kinds for HD games but the graphic card benchmark on notebookcheck.net says otherwise....

Which will be the best gaming laptop in 14 inch screen around 40k approx??..I play games like Resident Evil,NFS,GTA etc.

"Will the laptop hang in the routine tasks?", depends what the routine tasks are. Generally, with the config u mentioned, it might not hang in even my "advanced" tasks. See, most applications don't draw on the processor too much. Ppl try to take extremely high end processors with too low RAM space and then curse Intel (or AMD). In my opinion, even a 1st Gen i3 will be sufficient if you do not run, graphics/video processing, virtualisation, or some high-class simulation tasks; just keep the RAM upwards of 3GB cuz Win 7 does demands some.

Abt dealers telling u that 5470 is sufficient, it actually is. It depends on the rig u put it into. 512MB graphics memory is good, just don't try to run Crysis or Anno in high-medium settings. If u are getting a laptop with, say ATI 5650 and another at the same price with ATI 5470, with the latter being better in a few other aspects- go for ATI 5470. There are some gaming freaks here(like me, and probably rebzin : ), who are very particular abt getting highest performance with the least of money (with the money part being less important than the performance part).

Any, read, any graphics card will do, as long as it is DirectX 10.1 or higher; no matter ur processor is 1st gen or 2nd. Just get a GPU, if u really need to watch a lot of HD movies and play a few high-end games (occasionally)

Rahul: veere, MDI mil, fir detail mein samjhayenge. I'm ur batchmate. : And u know the reason why I'm pushing u to get a GPU, what with all the HD movies a particular guy is gonna bring

Please suggest some good laptop which is good for gaming and other stuff, regular work and no problems with hardware or heating? Earlier i had plans to get it from US but it didnt work out....i was thinking of lenovo b470 with 2nd gen i5,i gb nvidia geforce,4gb ram,500 gb hdd, finger print reader etc. for $649,roughly about 30000...i know i won't get such a deal in india for 30000 but would want to get the best possible for this price....can increase it to a max of 35000.
