Buying A Laptop

but the dealer has told me 2nd gen processors r sufficient for games which require upto 512 MB card...even intel websites says that 2nd gen processors hav dedicated memory nd graphics for all mainstream gaming except 3d..Do I still need a graphic card???

Rahul, if u are really sure that u want to play games on your laptop, then you should go for atleast 512MB Graphics Card. Thing is, "casual and mainstream" is a very ambiguous term.

Computer Games on Laptop Graphic Cards - Notebookcheck.net Tech

Generally speaking, many mainstream games released later than 2008 might not run with smooth framerates, or may only run at low-medium settings. HD3000 is good, but remember that most of the systems on which these benchmarks are run are "optimised" to run these tests; yours won't be (who has all that time??)

Still, HD3000 is a good compromise, if u get 4GB RAM (atleast)

Definately Second gen processors are better and u can do normal gaming and surfing, movies etc without any hassle and unless u are serious gamer and don't want to play advanced games in high settings then it is fine(Crysis can't be played on high settings even with 1 gb card :)) ...
But if u wan to play latest games and up coming games then u must have a dedicated graphics card...As u must be owing this lappy for at least 3 years and every next upcoming game requires updated system requirments. so u might play few games requiring less power with HD 3000 but playing games like GTA 4 will definately require a gud graphics card...
check this link http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-HD-Graphics-3000.37948.0.html

as per this ,it can play some latest games on low setting but finds it difficult to play on medium and high ..
so it is as per ur requirment...but with HD 3000 u must owe 4 gb ram ..

Whatever suits ur pocket, really. The thing is, there would always be some games which would not run even on 1 GB card, and there will be more of such games in the future. Now, I don't think that you'll go into Game testing and reviewing, so any card works; at max u'll be pressed to play the game in medium-high detail instead of "Ultra-HIGH!!!"

But that'll be rare, and, laptops usually come as a package deal. So, go for the best package u are getting- RAM, HDD, screen et al. And that it should have a separate GPU.

But, if it comes to a tie-breaker scenario on Graphics cards only, look up this link

Mobile Graphics Cards - Benchmark List - Notebookcheck.net Tech

Try not to take a card with DirectX version less than 10.1 (11 wud be awesome, if u are getting it cheap). The next criteria, in the order of preference, would be:

1. Memory Speed
2. Core Speed
3. Pixel/Vertex Shaders

But even this list is highly contestable. So, just go for the cheapest/overall winner

As for the second part of your query, you should purchase genuine softwares only. Period.

Guys i've bought dell xps laptop.. Can anybody tell me how much would it cost for a mini display to vga converter?

Is the above config fyn for everyday computing+high performance gaming??

For everyday use, this system is pretty good, but if you want it for High performance gaming, nope it is not...

First of all, high performance gaming is not possible in most laptops (eg : Running Crysis at full graphics can only be a dream in most cases)... Now if you want to run the system with better gaming options, I would suggest you to upgrade your processor to atleast i5-2410 processor, ie is the second generation of Intel i5... The GPU is quite sufficient and I believe it is one the best that we can get in mainstream laptops nowadays... For more info, you can check Dragonfire's post on GPU in the last page... You can also think of upgrading your ram to 4GB...

Also an important piece of information for all you guys who want gaming laptops. It is a given that, with a high performance laptop you invariably have a bad battery life. So in case u do have such a laptop, always ensure you are near a charging point, coz you are gonna need it.

I second Rebzin's opinion, i5 2nd Gen, or even 1st Gen, can be considered to be a performance processor. i3, be it 1st gen or 2nd, are base processors.

However, Rahul, u are joining a B-school this year; and if u are getting enough time to eke out the max performance from your laptop, then maybe you should really start being worried about something else too.

3GB RAM (with a discrete GPU) would be fine, as long as you aren't into virtualisation and simulation. Or, as Rebzin pointed out, running Crysis on full-on graphics mode.

And about keeping the laptop for 4-5 yrs......have you taken into consideration the "wear and tear" (figuratively speaking) of the hardware over the years? Probably, after 3 yrs you'll be wanting to buy a new laptop, maybe just bcoz the cover looks scuffed (and ur salary is burning a hole in your pocket )

In my view, an i3 1st gen, with a GPU (ATI 5650 is sweeeeetttt) would be O.k. That should take care of your Blu ray/HD movies, and most of the games too. Try to keep the price sub-40K.

Just my view, though. If u really wanna keep ur laptop for more than 3 yrs. go only for 2nd GEN core-I processors, preferably i5; and 4GB RAM with 500GB HDD (or a 1TB extern HDD, costs less/Rs. spent if u already have a 320GB HDD in your laptop, plus other advantages). GPU as ATI 5650 or higher is alright.

Actually, the second gen Core-I don't offer much in terms of performance boost for regular applications. But what they do is, they enhance the performance in terms of videos, streaming content, video/image processing and encoding etc, dramatically! Considering the wave of change that is coming in this segment, I would strongly advise buying a 2nd Gen i5 if u are planning to keep your laptop for more than 3 yrs. If not, then any 512 MB GPU, i3-380m, 3/4 GB RAM would suffice.

Your call. :cheerio:

And invest in a laptop cooler.

People I have a doubt : My budget is 40-42 K for a laptop and I am into Gaming Addicted to the FIFA Series , Into GTA , F1 , Football Manager as Well

I am finding three options One i3 3GB RAM from HP , One with a Similar Configuration From Lenovo , and the Dell Inspiron with an i5 and 4 GB Ram

The problem is that the Dell Laptop has a 1 GB ATI Graphic Card while Lenovo has a 1 GB NVIDIA Card , my Doubt is Should I sacrifice an i5 and an Extra GB of Ram for NVIDIA?

Is there a huge difference in the performance between an NVIDIA card and an ATI One?
