Buying A Laptop

The major difference between the two models is in the processors they are based on.
While, 15 R is based on Intel processors, M501R is based on AMD processors.

Change the wireless card from Intel Centrino n-1000(WIDI) to Dell 1501. Costs you about 500 bucks.
U've kept the base as i5-480M, what's ur take on keeping the same as i3-380m? My requirements are only MBA related, and movies (HD, though). Besides, as in the case of Doux, wouldn't the integrated GMA HD be sufficient? Going by the same config, Dell would cost around 37K (with 2 yrs accidental warranty). Leaves one free to put the remaining 3K towards a 1TB extern HDD.

And, would a discrete GPU not consume more battery and produce more heat?

First thing, Yes, a discrete GPU will consume more battery, but about more heat, I am not sure.

Now as you said, since you have only light requirements, I guess the i3-380 would suffice, but I would still suggest you to go with a discrete GPU than with Intel GMA. The Intel GMA, I believe is sufficient to play games like WoW at low/medium level, but if you go higher up, you will have problems. Similarly, with playing HD movies, a discrete GPU will do a better job than Intel GMA, which sucks. If its going to be the Intel GMA, then the entire HD processing will have to be done by i3 processor.

If you are very particular about a External HDD and a considerably light user, (read : won't multi-task ), then the rig that you said is sufficient...

I was thinking to get a new XPS 15...
Then I saw this -> VPCCB15FG : C Series : VAIO Laptop & Computer : Sony India.
Both are priced at 55k

The major differences are
New XPS 15
Blu Ray reader
JBL Speakers
Nvdia GT 525M

Vaio
Full HD screen (1920 X 1080)
Also I hear 1 more year of cover is only 2.5k(dell is 5.5k)
AMD Radeon HD 6630M / Intel HD Graphics 3000

Processor is same..RAM is same..size is same...HD is same...

Hmmm......when u look at it from that angle, it does makes some sense. But Dell is not offering any 512MB cards in Inspiron 14R series, and ATI 5650 is redundant for me.

Anyways, any idea abt what happens to Dell's Warranty if we upgrade out machine later on? I mean, I put in a graphics Card later on, and/or upgrade the RAM to 6/8GB? I don't wish to spend any more than 36-37K right now (40K if processor is i5), AND have to purchase 2 yr accidental warranty(sole reason for going for Dell).

Even i was thinking of taking that XPS, now you have added to my confusion. I guess the difference will come in the GPUs. Also the presence of having BR reader and JBL Speaker should tip the balance in favour of Dell, though I am not sure how JBL Speaker on a laptop compares to regular Intel High Definition Audio.

new XPS 15 is a good machine .. but i am more keen on 14 .. however i dont see XPS 14 ( with sandy bridge processors ) coming out any time soon in india .. will have to do with 15 .. also i want to avail 5% corporate discount from dell before i move out from present compnay .. if anyone has idea bout new xps 14 pls post

If you really need a 14" lappy, then I would suggest you to go with the regular inspiron 14. If you check out a few posts back, I had put in a link with a configured system, which is in my opinion a far better deal than the XPS 14. Even the GPU in that system is a better one. Only thing that is special about XPS 14 is its JBL Speakers. And XPS 14 costs around 48k whereas the Inspiron 14 that I had configured costs just 40k.

I might be missing something as I haven't gone through it much.

I was thinking the other way round, ie, Dell being the better deal.

The processor in sony is also the 2nd generation version, same as what is found in Dell.

I just read that HP is also upgrading its Envy series as well as DV4 series to 2nd generation also with a new cooling technology. The new systems will come out by End of May. So I was thinking of waiting to see Envy series and then make a decision.

I read a couple of reviews on Envy.. Seems it has more battery life than Dell... Plus its available in 14' with full HD...

Even I think I will go for Dell since BR reader n JBL speakers are unique to it.. AFAIK JBL speakers are really good.. Dell seems to have got this one right..
Only if they could have given HD screen too...

if I add it separately price would go upto 65k( Full HD + 2yr complete cover) and thats a lot of money

well laptop is not for just music i guess
and personally i prefer sony's FHD more then JBL speakers
and graphics can be switched to normal use or high use so will save lot battery
and just 2.5k for 1 year extra battery entice me more
and maybe blu ray cd price come down but at this very time they are very high and cant come so low atleast for one more year, further more i dont remember when was the last time i used a CD or a DVD
i installed even the window with my pen drive
sony is so far most suitable for me i still have one doubt the price of other things for sony are really high but still with FHD this laptop is very very nice deal
but i am also going to wait for HP envy

ya .. i am in the same dilemma .. sony prices are way too high and with these new processors just being launched i guess it will be better if wait for a month .. hope prices will come down by 2-3k ... xps 14 vaio c series 14 inch and hp pavillion g4 will be my choice

hello puys, i havent read the full thread but whatever i have done i couldnt find any comparison or comments on macbook pro 15".. can you please tell whether the technical stuff is good or not and is it worth the price....

Thats good news. Any way we could confirm this?

Also another question -> whats the major difference between i3 and i5 sandy bridge processors?

Someone had asked the same query regarding SB availability in Dell-India forum in FB and there was no official reply confirming any dates. The only response was that they will announce it once they get any confirmation.

Now regarding the difference between i3 and i5 SB processors. Well, i3 has a dual core processor whereas i5 works on quad core. Core i3 also lacks many other features like the Turbo Boost.

Turbo Boost is the most hyped and the key feature of the Core i series but it is not available in i3 series. The turbo boost enables the processor to increase the CPUs clock speed on demand though I am not sure how it works.

Core i3 and i5 also lack Hyper Threading, which is available only in i7.

So i5 has an advantage of having a higher clock speed as well as quad core.

You should remember that in most cases, esp when it comes to an average user, what we need is a higher clock speed and not a greater no of cores. The cores come into effect when we are useing 3D rendering and photo editing softwares, scientific and higher engineering softwares etc.

is dr turbo boost in 2nd gen i3??

Hi..how is Acer Aspire TimelineX-AS4820TG?
