Buying A Laptop

Chesterchaz Says
Laptop mini will serve all the purposes of any MBA student except for gaming. Its pretty easy to carry to college and if u r considering to buy one look out for Dell and Vaio . Both of them are good in terms of working as well as style.

wat abt the ones from samsung and hp?

If you are interested in buying a dell laptop then go for inspiron series instead of studio ones.. As to replace any part in studio you would either have to send it to repair depot or a technician would visit your place.. Where as in inspiron models you can change small things like hard drive ram etc on your own....

And you can add a 3 year complete care warranty that gives you a warranty in case of accidental damage.. And you can get a discount of 8 % by adding the warranty and ordering the laptop on name of a government employee

I have a STUDIO and i too have got a complete cover warranty for 2 years + 5% discount.I boyught the laptop in June 2010.
1. Dell Studio with i5 processor and 1gb graphics card ( will come in handy for any purpose and will cost around 45-48k) I personally found i5 better than i7 in the sense that it generates lesser heat and the battery lasts somewaht longer.Morever for every activity that an MBA student wants to do on a lappy ..even an i3 will suffice :)
2. Sony Vaio - killer looks and performance is also good...though u may have to compromise on the configuration that u may get on Dell at the same price.I have friends who have a vaio and it works very well..no problems whatsoever as of now.

I would recommend Lennovo.HP is slowly losing out in the race of good laptops.Main problems associated are weight,Lesser battery time and Heat problems are common too.(Even in the pavillion series)

Dell Studio or Sony vaio...they come with a 1gb gfx card,320/500GB HDD,4Gb ddr3 RAM....thats more then enuff for the purpose u might be requiring the lappy.

Dell Inspiron for anything less than 40k....U can get a pretty good configuration at 37-38k(with 1gb gfx and 4gb ram )....my roomates are using it...and it works well (slightly better than Studio in terms of battery life and is also ligher than studio).
Vaio wont be available with a good cnfig at

Cheers

Hi CC
Had 1 more query if you cud advice

I have checked d market price of various lappys myself.
All Apple Lappys start from 60k which is way expensive for me.
And the sony Lappy's which I liked very priced at about 40-42k.
Some lesser known laptops of the same configuration were charged at around 30-32k.

Of course Sony laptops were more attractive than the cheaper ones but are they worth the extra 10,000 bucks, all having the same configuration ?

If any1 has an experience with sony and other lappy's. pls advice.

As for purpose, I would like to play more kind of games in my lappy :-P
Thanks.

I have Acer 5920 and its battery life is pathetic.Rest are superb(bought in 2008 nov).
Regarding gaming, i suggest u to ensure that ur lappie has a dedicated graphics card(Nvidia better than ati)
I suggest if u have a relative coming down from usa, tell him to buy a lappie from amazon.com or others and that too with international warranty. You will save a lot of money;plus as per Baggage (Amendment) Rules, 2006 - (Baggage Rules, 199;" One laptop computer (notebook computer) over and above the said free allowances mentioned above is also allowed duty free if imported by any passenger of the age of 18 years and above".
Please ensure that lappie has international warranty.atb

hiii

well i m planning to get DELL XPS 15 icore 5 from my friends in AMERICA.
My question is :

will the adapter work here and what if some problem come up in the laptop?or any other problem?

or shall i cancel it and buy in india?
please reply

Of what i have seen is that students' lappys remain ON throughout the day...in that case DELL n Vaio stand up to it. And its a long term investment when u go for a laptop ..5 years atleast...
If u still want something cheaper then Dell Inspiron is a very good choice...otherwise go for vaio or studio.

i got acer aspire 5745. experts plz provide some reviews/ cautions/specifications

15 inch is bulkier and hence difficult to carry everyday so i'll recommend a 14inch..Its more a matter of personal opinion but.

i will need my laptop for general mba purpose, movies, photoshop, gaming(like nfs, cs, aoe, dota)...my budget is around 45k...i need 4gb ram, 500gb hdd, i5 processor btw i can manage without high speed gaming if the budget is too good for me
what is extra in xps studio over inspiron other than graphics card?also, will vaio e-series or pavillion be better, i guess not...
ahhh, i need good support too and i think dell can beat others in this field in india

a budget of 45 k is more than enough to buy a decent laptop and you can have a dedicated 1gb graphic card alongwith i5 processor

what is extra in xps studio over inspiron other than graphics card?

xps studio has jbl surround speakers and nvidia 3dtv play

also, will vaio e-series or pavillion be better, i guess not...

sony vaio e series costs more and look better than dell for the same configuration and hp makes sturdy laptops

remember how 8-10 years back mobiles meant nokia and many were shy to buy other brands , it is same with dell and laptops now , they have an excellent pr.if you want other than dell than acer aspire 5745g and toshiba are worth looking.

hey thanks temuchin
a few more doubts if you dont mind...inspiron, as i see from the link you've given, will cost around 40-42k with the config i want(500gb, 4gb, 5i, 1gb graphics nvidia) but when i add office and increase the warranty, this itself would cost more than 45k so if i want an xps studio, it will go beyond my budget which is around 48-50k, right??? maybe i have to settle for an inspiron then :drinking:
also could you clarify that 5-8% waiver they were talking about?? and would these costs go down if i go and buy from a shop rather than ordering?? or should i order at home for a genuine product??

thanks

hi there
its just all about how much you want to extend your budget
the temptations are always there to pay a few thousand bucks more and get more add ons

clearly as you had said in the previous post that your budget is around 45 k , my guess is there will always be a nagging doubt in your mind if you settle for inspiron over xps.;)

regarding 5-8 % discount i know that shopping sites like flipkart give anywhere between 6-12 % off ,:D check the link below
Computers In Price Range Rs.35000 - Rs.45000 India: Computers Price List India: Flipkart.com

you will not get discounts in dell showrooms if not given by company
you can bargain for 2-3 k off in electonics shops

Guys,
Those who have calls from IIMs and waiting for final results, I would suggest you guys wait a while before deciding on laptops - Bulk deal of laptops for students joining 1st year is organized at a Pan IIM level, and made sure that laptops are delivered ahead of their academic requirements. This deal happens after a proper scrutiny of configurations, service (feedback from previous years usage/service experience) etc., so that the laptops are robust enough to handle the 2 year academic rigours like battery backup, weight etc., and selected after a competitive bidding by companies like (Dell, HP, Lenovo etc.,)
Last year atleast the following options were available to choose from out of the bulk deal:
1. HP Pro book 4320 - 13 inch
2. HP Pro book 4520 - with graphics card for gamers
3. Apple Macbook
This year its highly likely that there would a net book as well in addition to the above list of business laptop, gaming laptop and mac book.
Hence overall, for the price you pay this would be one the best deals that you can manage to get.
I think the deal information will be communicated in a google group that would be open for incoming PGPs as soon as the results are out.

i've got an inspiron15 nd yes,it feels a bit bulky. My take: go for a 14'' scrn.more than general use it'd be ur budget dat wud decide d lappy...in d simplest case ,you can always go for an inspiron14.
