laptops are not exempt frm customs if they arrive in india through courier....
it duty free only when some1 brings laptop as part of personal luggage...
else it will draw arnd 15-20 % import duty....
so unless some1 is coming frm US u dont get to save much....
its impossible to advise in any fashion if u dont have or remember the model number. as far as config is concerned its a personal decision. u have to get one based on ur needs.
u had better checked out compaq's website www.compaq.com They provide complete configurations and prices.
one other option u have is in Acer. cheap notebooks with decent configs but with a Linux platform. so if u are comfortable with Linux, then anything from Acer is great value.
personally, i have used Compaq and have found it decent but at exorbitant price tags.
cheers!!!
just a doubt ! how accurate are the prices that are quotes on the website ? I mean are the prices inclusive of everything ? and is there any room for negotiations?

the prices give there are indeed inclusive of all but the handlin charges. but u sud use them more as a pricing decision and then pay a visit to the nearest Compaq showroom havin been educated abt configs and prices.
it helps because otherwise the overfriendly salesman will slip u one to sink ur wallet but with an useless config.. i have seen it happen, so it is wise to to be aware of ur choices.

i m planning to go for a compag laptop(presario b3816ap/b3817ap). wanted to know whether anybody has faced any problems with the battery etc before shelling out the money...
how long does the battery last generally?

i have used a Compaq Presario 2001.
it was a nice machine with decent features. battery life was never an issue. the battery holds up pretty nicely for around 3 hours with moderate to slightly heavy usage. the only problem was the cost. it was a whoopin 1 lakh arnd a year and a half ago and the outfitter had put in just 128MB RAM. with 256MB popped in, the notebook was good enough for a desktop replacement. it had a 30GB HDD.
check for expansion ports like USB ports, card readers, blue tooth, LAN connectivity, inbuilt modem for a dialup, infrared and so on. opt for a DVD/CD RW if u can. a RW is absolute must as it is the easiset way to clean up the HDD.
cheers!!!
Hi friends...I am in a dilemma right now...Have been visiting the showrooms of
some of the vendors like Toshiba,IBM and Compaq...
I have to choose between...Compaq Presario M2013AP ( Cost : 54K approx)
and IBM Thinkpad R51-2887 LQ3( Cost : 56K approx)...Both have similar
configurations...My only mandatory requirement is a WiFi enabled laptop...
with decent RAM and HDD capacity...both of them offer a 1 year warranty
Please guide me...as which one should be preferred...and why....
Thanks....

Hello Guys
I've been following this thread for some time as I myself am going to buy a notebook in the near future. So here are my findings, currently I have narrowed down my choice between
1. Compaq M2013AP
2. IBM
3. Acer
Out of these, I am more inclined towards Compaq M2013AP as the configuration and price are the best - fit, also its the best looking of the lot. Some of us have got the price wrong, this model is priced at 49,990 by compaq and some dealers can go down as low as 47,000. Regarding IBM, I don't remember the mdel number but they have recently launced a centrino machine for 50,000 excellent configuration but touchpad and a few extra ports are missing.
Go for Acer only if you've an resource crunch, as the new models have not yet been proven in the market.

The choice for the processor is Centrino 715/725/735 or a celeron. It has got 256 MB RAM 40/60 GB HDD, 802.11b/g wireless fidility, bluetooth(optional), 6-in-1 media port, 3 USB ports
and a battery life of approx. 3 hrs, combo drive etc.
The only thing is compaq is giving away XP home and not XP prof. but still its a good buy.

256 Mb RAM and 40 Gb HDD
hey abhijit,
can u tell me how much RAM and HDD do both of them provide in that price range???
D.M.
Hey dude...
The base price for the Compaq model is 49,990...I was talking about the final price(VAT + Cess inclusive)...
Also, the IBM model(R50e series ) which you are talking about is now obsolete....
The latest entry level centrino machine is R51 series, the one which I have
mentioned previously...and the base price for the same is 53,500...It has a
touchpad....
So, which one should one prefer....IBM or a Compaq
Please, pour in your comments(experts...), so that poor sould like
me can decide....
Thanks....

Both weigh around...3 Kg odd...also many told me that IBM laptops are
more sturdier than any other laptops...though they are not aesthetically
not done...also someone told me that Compaq Presarios get heated up
pretty fast...so, I guess, I will settle for an IBM laptop....
