hey guys,

It is cheaper to buy from US..with customs duty waived.
SONY VAIO,DELL and HP are most preferred while buying from US.

Sony Vaio costs between 1250$ to 1800$. THis is an awesome piece.

Dell is around the same range. But if one visits "Deals2Buy.com", he/she would find free floating Coupons with waivers ranging from 250$ to 750$, which reduces price considerably. the other advantage of buying from US is-they have MAIL-IN-REBATE options wherein the mail back a cheque worth 100$ to 250$ back to the customer in 3 months or so.

IBM-Not preferred coz their onsite support (Field support) in INDIA..isn't all that gr8.

HP- Not yet launched notebooks in INDIA, neverthless a good buy.

P-IV is advisable for guys with PC's at home..else u could consider P-Mobile.

P-Mobiles are usually more heavier than P-IV's.

Hope this info is useful...this is all I gathered thru my research and personal experience.

Most of the Notebooks from US offer a 1 yr. global warranty.

Incase u cannot buy from US..then buying from Inst...is a better option coz, they wud definitely be cheaper and also they offer 3 yrs warranty in most cases.

@mik no specific tips but just make sure that the cash ur spending goes into improving the performance of the lappy, eg dont spend 40$ on snap on color covers etc, imo not really worth it, instead spend it on extra ram etc, again performance b/w a 1.6 ghz and a 1.8 ghz pentium-m is negligible, see both have 2mb l2 cache 533mhz fsb, so the only performance gain u'll have is of 200mhz (that translates to 400-450 mhz more in p4 terms) so not worth it, the 1.8 ghz proccy at this time is severly over priced, so stick to 1.6 ghz and spend more on the hdd etc. and btw dont buy an external mouse there, it is much cheaper in India, really.:) let me know what model u bought.

thnx for the info...

how about the warranty upgrade?

m yeroing on 600m
well if u r careful abt ur lappy u pbbly would need only the std 1 year, but ya better safe than sorry,:) go for the 2 year thing, and do list out the config that u have selected. btw fyi i think the 600$ coupon that i used has expired yesterday.

just so that u know did u go through this review in ??? u can find it here ??? u can find it here www.notebookreview.com ??? u can find it here [url=http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=2154&review;=Dell+Inspiron+600m+Intel+PentiumM%2C+1%2E4GHz%2C14%2E1+XGA+ATI+32MB+Video

this is what he says abt the heat generated on the 600m :
Heat

The hard drive for the Inspiron 600m rests on the lower-left side of the notebook. If I didn't tell you this, you would soon find that out because this is where all the heat builds up and you can certainly feel it. I found my left palm getting rather warm and toasty, now since it's the winter time I find this rather pleasing as a hand warmer. But in general having heat build up on a palm rest is not a good thing and could annoy some people. Indeed, if you're running demanding applications on your 600m that causes the hard drive to have to spin a lot then it gets uncomfortably warm over on the left side there.

most of my frenz in US r using 60om and they ahvent yet complained anything against it..
i guess it is a safe buy...

i will probably use the 500 off on 1399 coupon...currently it has expired..but waiting for it to re arrive or some better deal..
still have atleast 10 more days to wait for a deal...:)

hey sandman,
i have seen a few models like compaq, IBM,HP,Sony Vaio, Toshiba and Dell out of these Dell was the bulkiest one or one can say the thickest one other models were pretty slim as compared to Dell. but from the price comparison i think Dell is the best bet.

its impossible to advise in any fashion if u dont have or remember the model number. as far as config is concerned its a personal decision. u have to get one based on ur needs.

u had better checked out compaq's website www.compaq.com They provide complete configurations and prices.

one other option u have is in Acer. cheap notebooks with decent configs but with a Linux platform. so if u are comfortable with Linux, then anything from Acer is great value.

personally, i have used Compaq and have found it decent but at exorbitant price tags.

cheers!!!
